I was surprised to see the draw of the Cincinnati tournament and see
that Todd wasn't in it, even though he accepted a wildcard into the
event. I looked at the tournament's website and it said "Todd Martin,
who accepted a wild card earlier this month, has pulled out due to
injuries." Does anyone know what kind of injuries he has and if it
will keep him from playing the US Open? I really hope it doesn't and
he gets better soon.

Max,

Todd's wife, Amy, is very nice and the baby is precious.

I wish he'd had some more time to rest between matches, too. The other sad loss
for those of us who know her is Mashona Washington (Mal's sister). She lost in
the 2nd round singles on Thursday and her doubles match on Friday. I keep
hoping that she will move up in the ranks.

I saved a lot of the pictures that appeared on the wimbledon website. One of
them showed the trainer working on one of Todd's legs, so he may have been
injured. I just know that if Todd was at 100% he could have won his match
today.

Did everyone see the nice piece espn did yesterday about Todd? He seems to
have a wonderful, caring, and loving wife and great kid. He has such a positive
attitude and puts tennis in perspective. I have even more respect for him
knowing that he's giving up spending time with his family so he can compete on
the tour.

I hope he makes a great run at this year's US Open so that he'll stay in the
game.

Well, he's through the 1st round with a fairly typical Martin style 9-7 5th
set win against Canas. I was really worried about this match when I found out
Todd was up against him. Did you get to see the match? It was a pretty small
court so you might be on TV or in some of the pictures if you were there.

Next up is Sjeng Schalken, who Todd beat 6-4 6-4 on hard in 2000. Sjeng
Schalken has terrible form on his serve, and I really think Todd will do well
against him. I've read that Schalken has done well on grass before, but if Todd
plays well he should win (hopefully easily). I just hope Todd isn't too tired
out from his 5 set match today.

While Todd was playing Canas I saved some of the pictures that loaded on the
Wimbledon website and will post a few of those.

Our list owner has been "absentee" for some time and we do not have a moderator
who can help by banning the member who does that. Another of the members has
been trying to contact her - if we cannot reach her we may have to get Yahoo to
add one or two of the longer term members as a full moderator so that we can
start blocking some of this stuff. These messages annoy me, too.

Todd is up against Guillermo Canas in the first round. Canas has beaten
Roddick, Safin, Henman, and some other good players. Todd could definitely use
all the support he can get for this match. You can see the draw on the
Wimbledon website here:

http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/index.html

Todd is on the bottom quarter. If he can get past the first round it doesn't
look like that bad a draw. I'm glad to hear he has loads of support at
Wimbledon, because I think that really helps him play better. I've seen a lot
of matches where it looked like he was down and out but then the crowd got
behind him and he ended up turning things around.

Todd's game is so sound and he's done very well on grass before so I think if
he plays well he can win. I'll be on pins and needles until the match is over.

I wondered when you were going to reappear, Kristina! I'm still interested in
hearing your version of the event. Bruce & I had a great time wandering
around the various courts after dinner was over and we could leave the
coolers. It looked like the kids were having a great time with the different
activities.

Tell your mom "hello" for me :)

I checked the draw sheet and Todd Martin has to play Andy Roddick
in the first round. I know Todd beat Roddick at the lipton a few
years ago, but Roddick was injured. In their other matches Todd
seems to do well in the first set but not in the following sets. Any
thoughts on Todd's chances? Do you think the red clay will help or
hurt him?

I have my replay tv set to record all the french open matches.
They will definitely televise this match.

Kristina is also about 16 (not sure of her exact age - maybe she will tell us?).
I worked in an office about a year ago where I was about twice as old as the
three guys there.

Don't want to oust Caroline, either, but we do need someone to be appointed
a moderator to act in her place. The recent spam messages the group has
received need to be addressed and none of us can remove the spammer
from the list. Otherwise, we pretty well moderate ourselves.

What do you mean, read my own paper? I got lazy when I knew that I would
find the appropriate tennis articles here without having to look for them!

Tee hee! I met Kristina last night at the Mal Washingon Kids for Kids
Carnival. She is a delight and really did well working with the children.
(Yes, I got to do some roaming around). Also enjoyed meeting her
mom. It just so happened that Mal came by to say hello when
Kristina was nearby, so I grabbed her to introduce them. There
were some other pros there (a couple of them are retired from the
tour and work at local social clubs as Tennis pros now).

Will let Kristina tell about how she enjoyed the event - So, Kristina,
get busy & let us know!

Thanks for the compliment!

Don't know if you are shooting with film or a digital camera. I'm
using a high speed film for most of my shots now. That should
help some of the blur, but once in a while it is fun to have just
a little so that you can get the speed effect. I also have an
advantage that you don't - I am usually standing on the edge
of the court taking those pictures. Don't have that opportunity
at a professional tournament <G>. Well, we were almost on
top of the players at the 1996 Olympics....

Oh, yes! If Todd, Mal, or any other professionals are at the event
they are more than happy to speak with you. Just approach them
when they are not obviously engaged in a converstation with someone
else. Normal courtesy applies as it would anywhere. Some of those
photos in the album are ones my husband took of me and the
celebrities. I missed the Jim Courier-Mal Washington match a
few weeks ago - hated not to be there as Jim missed our Gala
events last fall. He is lots of fun! Todd is just as incredibly mild
mannered and humble in person as he appears on television. Brian
Gottlieb has quite a sense of humor, too. There are advantages in
having the ATP headquarters just down the road from here :)
(FYI: I'm the tallest female you will see in those pictures! - Long
dark hair, and too heavy <sigh> -except for Brenda Schultz) Also
get to meet a number of the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a member of
the booster club I get to help out with some of their charitable activities,
too. Will really miss Mark Brunell's events now that he is a Redskin.
Sure hope he doesn't pull out his support of the local childrens hospital.

I'd love to see Todd on Friday, but it isn't as important for me since
I have met him a number of times. However, I would love for Kristina
to get the chance - my camera will be on hand "just in case".

Do you actually get a chance to talk to him at the event? I looked at
your photalbum and you have some great pictures. Some of my pictures
look a little blurry since I had never used it for motion at night before. Any
tips on how to take better tennis pictures so I will know for next year? I have
one pic of Martin hitting a backhand (I didn't post it) that would be great
except it looks like I added cartoony special effects on his swing.

Hopefully my monitor problems will be fixed on Thursday - will be anxious
to go see those pictures :)

Todd did attend the event last year that Kristina & I will be working at on
Friday. He and Mal Washington are really good friends, so there is always
a chance he will show up if he doesn't have other obligations.

I reduced the pictures and uploaded six of them on the website. I included
pictures of him from different matches.

He did reasonably well at the Houston clay court tournament, reaching the
quarterfinals. I don't know how to find out his future schedule.

Grrr....Now I hear from you....Kerry & I both had email to you bounce
last week...she needed your last name for the program!

I will be on the lookout for you on Friday. Both my hubby & I will be there.
Haven't
heard anything about Todd taking part, but it sure would be fun to have him
there.
You will really like the Foundation staff - ask Kerry or Terri to point me out
so that
we can meet and make everyone on the list jealous. We expect to arrive around
5 pm. Mal knows me by sight, but I don't think he has ever managed to place
my face and name together.

See you soon!

If you can survive the experience go ahead and get them into the list
album however you can. If you have a problem, why don't you go
to Webshots, Shutterfly, Image Station or any other photo album
web site and put them there.

Jim Courier played MaliVai Washington last weekend in an exhibition
fund-raiser for Mal's foundation. I had planned to get involved with it,
but never found the time. Was sorry to miss it, but will be helping
with one of his youth events in a few weeks.

If you took a bunch, then you could set up an on-line

to see them!
