I'm not sure but I think he was having leg/knee problems and it would have
been too difficult for him to continue competing. I watched the live score of
his match through the 1st 2 sets with the TV on in case they showed his match
instead of Serena's boots, but they didn't. I went out and played tennis myself
for a little while. When I came back Martin was serving at 5-3 in the 4th, but
I guess he just didn't have another 5th set in him.
The network showed the last game and the retirement announcement. I'm happy
to report he went out swinging and hit a good forehand return on the last point.
I really hope they have a ceremony for him like they did for Chang/Sampras.
I've gotten a little better at video editing so I'll put everything from his
match and retirement announcement on a video. If anyone is interested I'll send
it to you.
Any ideas what his plans are now? Do you think he'll play on the senior tour,
become a commentator, coach, or what? I know he wants to stay connected to
tennis.
Yesterday was especially sad for me because I've been watching him since 1993
when I was 12. I really enjoyed all the battles that he's had over the years,
especially his wins at the US Open over Rusedski and Moya. Most of all I liked
the way he conducted himself on and off the court. I wish more people behaved
like him.

Yes it is sad to lose him, but we knew it was coming. I'm curious to
see what he decides to do next.
Glad to see you back in the group, Caroline. We were worried. I
hope you were off on a fun adventure not struggling through something
difficult and awful. I hope the group stays together for a while.
