I was watched the live scores of Todd Martin vs Raemon Sluiter and
it was an incredibly close match. The first set had so many ups and
downs it was incredible. Despite multiple break chances for both
plaers both of them ended up breaking only once to force a
tiebreaker, which Martin won 7-5.
The second set also went to a tiebreaker, which unfortunately
Raemon Sluiter won. In the 3rd set Martin broke Sluiter at 3-3 to go
up 4-3 in the final set. Unfortunately Sluiter broke right back for
4-4. At 5-5 Martin had 2 break points at 12-40 on Sluiter's serve
but Sluiter held him off and won the game. After that Martin held
serve to get to a 3rd tiebreaker.
Martin got some minibreaks to and had 2-0, 4-2, and finally a 5-4
lead with 2 serves. At that point I thought for sure Todd was going
to win. I called my brother and told himt to watch Todd serve out
this great match. I couldn't believe it when the score went to 5-5,
5-6, then finally after hitting refresh over and over 5-7 with Raemon
Sluiter winning the match.
I'm looking at this as good practice for him for the US Open. He
lost first round here last year and look how well he did at the US
Open.
