SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Todd Martin celebrated the birth of his son
with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brian Vahaly in the first round of the
Siebel Open on Monday night.
Martin, playing in his first tournament of the year, became a father
for the first time on Jan. 21 with the birth of his son, Jack.
"I don't think anything could have brought life into perspective more
than the birth of my son and the subsequent few weeks," said Martin,
32.
The fifth-seeded Martin, who reached the quarterfinals here last
year, won three break points and had nine aces.
"I didn't know what to expect going out on the court, what exactly I
was going to be able to do," said Martin, who hadn't played in three
months. "This is sort of uncharted territory. But then it's only been
three months, so it should be no big deal."
Vahaly, who finished in the top 100 last year for the first time,
fell to 2-3 on the season.
