July 25th in Minnesota
Minnesota controled the play in this match and were able to put the
Timbers away in overtime on a golden goal by Amos Magee two minutes
into the overtime period. Portland did have some chances to win the
match as McKinley Tennyson had shots turned away by Joe Warren in the
Thunders net.

Tennyson who scored in the 48th minute of play.Milwaukee did come back

July 11th
The Timbers came out strong against El Paso with strong play by
everyone on the pitch. El Paso did not rollover and play dead as they
tested Josh Saunders many times in goal. The thing which stands out in
the match was the fouls called on the Timbers by Referee Ricardo
Valenzuela. Four yellow cards on the Timbers in the first half alone
with El Paso flopping on the ground every chance they got. This style
of play is always done by El Paso and the Referee falls for it every
time. The scoring was started off a great pass from Tennyson to Hugo
in the 22nd minute. Hugo took his time and placed the ball past the
keeper for his first goal of the season. El Paso got back into the
game when a handball was called on Bryn Ritchie in the box. Andrade
put in the PK for El Paso in the 38th minute of play. Just before half
time Hugo took a corner kick and Lee Morrison put into the back of the
net on a header for a 2-1 Timbers lead. The Picture is Morrison's goal.

In the second half El Paso got back into the match on a rare keeper
mistake by Josh Saunders with Andrade getting the goal. The match
which is always physical with El Paso lived up to its reputation with
players going down all over the pitch. Defender Aaron Heinzen seemed
to be on the receiving end of many dirty plays by El Paso. This in
turned made Heinzen play even harder and resulted in what appeared to
be the winning goal by Aaron in the 78th minute. After a a hour and a
half review it was determined that the shot had deflected off Tennyson
and into the goal. For more on the match go to Portland Timbers. Com

July 3rd Byron Alvarez gets a hat trick after being subbed in in the
58th minute for Fadi Afash. The Timbers lost in Vancouver on Tuesday
in the 90th minute of play 1-0.
The Timbers played well most of the game but could not find the back
of the net until Alvarez came into the match. This three goals scored
by Byron gives him 7 goals for the season and the team leader in goals
scored for the Timbers. Josh Saunders recorded is 3rd shut out in just
four games as a Timber. The defense looked solid once again and the
mid field play was good.
I want to thank Wolf and Rob for making it down from Vancouver. We had
a great time with them again at the Bitter End. A special thanks to
Simon from Rochester,England. He added a Gillingham FC scarf to our
collection and now he is a owner of the Timbers Army scarf.

Portland gets three points on the road

The Portland Timbers travel to Calgary in Alberta Canada to play
the Storm. The Storm never came as the Timbers won 2 to 0 for
their second win in a row against Calgary.

The score was 0-0 at half time but it did not take long for the
Timbers to get on the scoreboard in the second half. Tennyson
put a goal in in the 46th minute off a rebound from a Beneditti
shot. The Timbers finished the scoring for the day when Fadi
Afash put in a PK. The Timbers have 7 wins and 7 losses as
they travel to Vancouver to play the White Caps
Tuesday July 1st. The Timbers are in second place with 21
points 4 points behind Seattle in first place and 3 points ahead
of Vancouver who are in third place

Timbers win in overtime! Byron Alverez is the hero once again as he
put in a rebound off a shot he took. The Timbers had a hard time
breaking down Calgary's defence. Gavin Wilkerson received a red card
off an elbow he threw. Other then that the match was even. The new
keepr Saunders was not tested much but he did have a shutout.

Timbers played well in El Paso coming back from being down 1-
0 at half and Winning 3-1. Tennyson scored on a PK, Byron
Alverez scored off an excellent feed from Jake Sagare and Dan
Antoniuk (Dizzy) got his first goal from a great feed from Fadi
Afash.

In Milwaukee the Timbers were out early as the Wave United
scored 4 goals in the first half. The Timbers never scored and no
other goals were scored in the second half. Former Timber Greg
Howes scored the first goal for Millwakee. To make matters
worse Jake Sagare got a Red card near the end of the match.
Jake sitting out a match will hurt the Timbers as he is one of the
reasons the Timbers had won two matches in a row.

Next Timbers match is Thursday June 12th when the Whitecaps
come to town!

Portland gives the Whitecaps their firstloss og the season due to
Bobby Howe changing his starting line-up which played its best ball of
the season. Jake Sagare in center mid changed the whole game for the
Timbers as Jake was everywhere and distributed the ball better then
anyone has in a long time. Byron Alvarez scored on a header off a nice
cross by Fadi Afash.

May 18th Seattle 1 Portland 0
First I must say why am I doing a match report with such great weather
outside? I must be Nuts?
Portland came out soft as if Seattle had ther numbers and sure enough
in the 15th minute Marco Vele put it in the net for the Sounders. The
Timbers failed to clear the ball out the box which gave too many
chances for the Sounders to put one in and they did. The Sounders had
better control and build up through out the match. Timbers keeper
Curtis Spiteri made a great save on a breakawy in the second half to
keep the Timbers close. Tenneyson made some good moves plus a nice
free kick that Gavin headed towards the net.
For the third time this season the Sounders come out with a victory.
Players that looked good in the match were Aaron Heinzen, Fadi Afash,
Curtis Spiteri and Gavin Wilkinson. Players that came on that looked
good were Jake Vaughn, Jason Melendez and Manuel Brasil. Get the full
match report from Allison Andrews a Timber Rattlers

Match Report
May11
Timbers fall to the Whitecaps 2-1. the Whitecaps Jason Jordan
scored on a header from inside the six in the 11th minute. The
goal was set up by a free kick, taken from the right side of the
box. That was the score at half time and the Whitecaps controled
the half.
In the second half the Timbers subbed Brasil for Winters a
great move! Fadi on a breakaway, dribbled in from 30-plus yards
out, no contest puts one in the net. the Whitecaps get the game
winner from Morris, in the 65th minute. Jordan with the assist. So
the spell the Whitecaps have over the Timbers continue in
Vancouver BC.

Timbers came out fired up forcing Seattles keeper to come up
with some big saves. Big differance from game one in Portland
was starting Fadi. The first 20 minutes of the match belonged to
the Timbers. After that the game was a toss up. Seattle looked
strong once again in midfeild with Gregor (native of Portland)
having great control. Then Portland was lead into a sleep as the
Sounders took control of the match in the last 20 minutes
resulting in two Sounders goals.
On a positive note the Timbers Army showed up in good
numbers. 18 to 20 loyal Shed heads plus 5 others which
included Dan Aotniuk's brother which we hope will join us in the
Shed.
To be out of the Open Cup by losing both games to Seattle is
once again a hard to take. This year at least the score was
better. Afash and Antoniuk looked good on the front line as well
as did Tennyson and Alvarez when they subbed in. The problem
is getting them the ball in good areas so they can score. So once
again like in years past the weak center mid is haunting the
Timbers once again. The back line looks stonger then in past
seasons and this is the main reasons Seattle was held to 3
goals in two games. Once again the strong play of Gavin
Wikinson and Bryn Ritchie with the addition of Lee Morrison and
Nick Downing will help keep the score down this season. Curtis
Spiteri has some big shoes to fill this season with Matt
Napoleon retirement in Goal. He has had two outstanding
games with some amazing saves. The Timbers should be
looking into filling the void in the middle of the pitch. We got away
with it last season and with Greg Howes being gone makes the
job even harder to solve.

Brent Sancho is not returning.  He wanted to pursure an opportunity to play over in Scotland so the Timbers sold his rights to Dundee I believe.

While Brent certainly brought speed and alot of flair to the Timbers I think our defense is going to be much better this year.  Byrn Ritchie and Gavin Wilkinson will be back to anchor the middle.  We got two new outside backs - Aaron Heinzen on the left who is fast, quick, great with the ball at his feet and a good distributor.  On the right will be Lee Morrison who last played with the Dallas Burn.  Should be a strong back four.

See you tommorrow night!
