Hi Firebringer
I know there are a lot of folks on here who throw a lot more than knives
and hawks, personally I'll throw anything that even remotely looks like it will
stick!
I'm also a member of a Blowgun club which is for another list but you
might want to check out NSBA (National Sport Blowgun Assoc.) dot com of course.
As a result of a lot of bad equipment out there to throw with (at the time
Olsen OK Throwers) I started making my own, I've been at it for some time now
and can and will make just about anything you can dream up.
I make knives, axes, throwing cards in steel and titanium, some swords,
dart's, spikes and various Martial Art's type items but as a hobby business can
barely keep up with the demand.
Anyway some of the best throwers in the world are on this list and willing
to help anyone for the asking, check out the www.throwzini.com site for as
much info as you can handle and welcome!

Slings are MORE effective with dense projectiles. Cast lead was about
the most damaging material they could sling. I seem to remember
crowds were more fruitful targets, because someone would stop the
missle.

IMHO, Jon.

Well my new issue of Blade Magazine just arrived and after skimming through
it sort of fast I noticed a beautiful little Wharncliffe knife in the Spec
Sheet section and proceeded to read on.
I know what your thinking that's not a thrower, right? Well normally it

wouldn't be but because of Bobby Branton's long years of association with
knife
throwing and being the Pres. of the AKTA (American Knife Throwers Alliance)
as
well as his knife throwing demonstrations at the blade show every year the
author of the article took some liberties with this sweet little knife that
I
don't recommend, he threw it into his dart board several times, he also does
not
recommend using this type of knife for throwing but obviously somewhere in
him
is the heart of a knife thrower as well as a retired Master Seargent from
the
5th Special Forces.
MSG (Retired) Kim Breed did a great job of evaluating this beautiful knife
from Bobby Branton as well he should as Bobby makes not only some great
throwing knives but some serious custom knives as well.
So here's to you Bobby, keep up the great work and keep up getting people
out of the mindset of holding on to their knives!

Thanks Joe. I didn't think he would throw it. I'm glad it held up. I've been
out of the loop lately. My Mom has been in and out of the Hospital and that
has taken up a lot of my time. I'm struggling to get ready for Blade now,
even though it is approx 2 months away. Good luck to you guys in Claremore.

Be well,

Joe,

I've got a friend here in town (a doctor of Chinese medicine) who's an
expert in stuff Roman. He came out to throw a while back with an
armload full of pilum. And yes, according to him, they were designed
to bend on impact so as not to be picked up and used back at the
original throwers. It was also meant to weigh down the shield
catching the spear rendering it ineffective to carry. This according
to my pal, who goes by the name of Drusus.

I have proof of how effective they are. One of the points is still
lodged deep inside my biggest log round. Damn pilum...

Plus I figured a talented knife smith such as yourself would come up with
something unique. Actually someone told me that the spring steel will
flatten if heated in an oven. I haven’t tried it but it may work. Most of
that steel is curved to some degree, it is a band saw blade after all. They
tend to go in circles. Oh well, back to work.

but that's OK I'm making you all your future knives out of it!
You better stick to whips buddy!
On another note for those of you wha saw my small 10" spinning knife in
Fayetteville I just ordered 10 of them from my waterjet cutter that are
going to
be 12 1/2" long.
This knife came about from a design that Ricochet had sent me that turned
out bad due to it being in 2 different computer programs, so he told me to
send
the misshapen design to his dad 1/2 Spin who in turn created something
different out of them, he in turn sent me one of the redesigned one's and I
redeigned it again so it came full circle and I came up with a Bowie knife
design that
you can spin on your finger like a six shooter.
This is nothing new to knife design John Bailey and Mike Spiker of FL.
had
the Ring Razor Bowie out many years ago, the only real problem with that one

was it's shape was really not conducive for throwing well (in my personal
opinion) so when 1/2 Spin sent me this knife I decided it could be a great
thrower
and spinner and hopefully I'll have some prototypes at Claremore along with
my newest design that if I can get done in time I'll be throwing in the
IKTHOF
throw there.
I'll try to put a pic in the folders under Joe D. if I can get it there,
the pic I have isn't the best.

Well I believe the Discus was and still is made of granite or some sort of

stone and I'm guessing the Javelin was a metal tipped wood shaft, the one I
have I think is metal tipped carbon or fiberglass.
I think the spear was definitely one of the earliest thrown weapons and I

like throwing them but in the competitions we had in Austin the spear throw
really wears you out!

We will have to check with Mark but does that mean they will come back to
you when you throw them? Could be a problem. Of course my knives tend to
come back to me a lot anyway.

On the spinner note, I was spinning this thing in Fayetteville
and it really does spin well. Anyone who spins guns needs one of these
also.

Tim

the Ring Razor Bowie out many years ago, the only real problem with that one

was it's shape was really not conducive for throwing well (in my personal
opinion) so when 1/2 Spin sent me this knife I decided it could be a great
thrower
and spinner and hopefully I'll have some prototypes at Claremore along with
my newest design that if I can get done in time I'll be throwing in the
IKTHOF
throw there.
I'll try to put a pic in the folders under Joe D. if I can get it there,
the pic I have isn't the best.
              Joe D.

That's enough outta you Mr. Bass you sabotaged me by sending me bent metal,
but that's OK I'm making you all your future knives out of it!
You better stick to whips buddy!
On another note for those of you wha saw my small 10" spinning knife in
Fayetteville I just ordered 10 of them from my waterjet cutter that are going to
be 12 1/2" long.
This knife came about from a design that Ricochet had sent me that turned
out bad due to it being in 2 different computer programs, so he told me to send
the misshapen design to his dad 1/2 Spin who in turn created something
different out of them, he in turn sent me one of the redesigned one's and I
redeigned it again so it came full circle and I came up with a Bowie knife
design that
you can spin on your finger like a six shooter.
This is nothing new to knife design John Bailey and Mike Spiker of FL. had
the Ring Razor Bowie out many years ago, the only real problem with that one

Well I believe the Discus was and still is made of granite or some sort of
stone and I'm guessing the Javelin was a metal tipped wood shaft, the one I
have I think is metal tipped carbon or fiberglass.
I think the spear was definitely one of the earliest thrown weapons and I
like throwing them but in the competitions we had in Austin the spear throw
really wears you out!

Hi Chad
As you say there is no reason to apologise about being a Christian!
However and yes I know this is not a very Christian sentiment and if I
offend anyone too bad, when dealing with people like that I would only like to
feel recoil such as the Marine in the following story a good friend sent me did!

A 'touchy-feely' CNN reporter, while interviewing a Marine sniper asked,
"What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist."

The Marine shrugged and replied, "Recoil."

A javelin is simply a spear that is designed for throwing. It is balanced
for throwing and is usually shorter and lighter.

The hand-sling, while not useful against an armored target, worked great for
shepherds in defending their sheep from wolves.

Thanks, Joe.

That brings up another question in my strange, little mind. If the Olympic
Games where Greek in origin, and the javalin and discus throws where part of the
original games, what where the javalin and discus made out of? As they where
technically throwing weapons and they where showing their skills at competitions
of hunting and fighting arts, what materials did they use for both competition
and hunting?

The Roman type sword of the bronze age had a distinctive bulbous pommel
which would have made it hard to throw by the handle, but the senators down to
the peasants carried and used smaller dagger and sheath type knives for almost
everything so I'm guessing that when in such close proximity to a
weapon/utensil that some of them figured out that it could be thrown with good
effect!
Just my opinion!

I agree with Chad that this is not the place for a discussion of this nature.
Please keep it on subject related to the list's topics. Any questions you have
of other subjects need to be applied to another, appropriately focused list or
via private email.

Now for the real question. What did they throw back then? Was it still the
bronze age, or was the iron age progressed far enough to have reliable throwing
weapons. I know the Romans had a couple of kinds of spears, but I read they
where designed to bend on first use. That way, they could throw them at the
enemy effectively, but if they missed, it was not very good for throwing back.

Slings where popular then, but using rock against iron age armor could not
have been very effective.

   Thought??

2. Your interpretations of Holy Bible verses is inaccurate, as Jesus makes
direct claims to be "I Am", "The Word", "The Arm of God" and various other
names that are used.

3. Christmas is a holiday created later to celebrate the birth and life of
Jesus. No one believes he was born on Dec. 25th, as the Bible makes
reference to the shepherds being out in the pasture. That places Jesus'
birth in spring or summer. The Catholic church used Dec. 25th because that
was a common practice of theirs to take the rituals of the local population
and modify them to include Jesus to "convert" the natives. When the church
realized that the people wouldn't give up their candle lighting and green
trees, they simply declared Dec. 25th (saturnalia, mythra) to be Christmas.
Convenient for them, unimportant today. What is important is the spirit
behind the celebration, not the pedantic details that annal people and
religious extremists like to harp about.

4. This list is about the throwing of axes, knives, spears and other
sharp/pointy/blunt thrown objects, not religion.

5. If you wish to continue this discussion of Christianity vs. Islam, take

Thank you.

not stand idly by while someone misintreprets MY holy scripture for their
own purposes.
