Job well done. And I told you guys to tie up Bainton and stick him in a

Hi, Sorry for the big headline but I had a lot of things to say in this post:

1) Thanks Ed for the answer on the numbers. I thought there are Much more
audince in the tournments. Your answer changed a bit my view...
Do you know of any tournment that had sponsors yet?

2) Thunder. First of all, nice to talk to you! The first tournment will be more
a demonstration, a small thing that I will make here in my city in March or
April. Youre invited, anyway, as Any of the friends of the Group who would like
to come to Brazil. Only dont expect too much, is the first "official"tournment I
ever managed...Untill now I only made public demonstrations...with good results!

My idea is to learn and deal with the problems of organizing a small
competition, before making a bigger one in August.

Other task: the main staple for food changes from places to places. São Paulo,
for example, where I was born, is a big city, with international food and great
influence of Italians (Pasta).

We also have a lot of Arabian and Japanese food. And ate lots of fast food, Mc
Donalds stuff. And rice and beans and beefs and salads, "normal"" stuff.

In the South, they like barbecues (so do I...), in the seaside theres a lot of
dishes made out of fishes and shrimps....some using fruits or coconuts in theyr
recipes. Some are very good.

But I believe our most known dishe is Feijoada, a kind of Brazilian Cassoulet
made out of black beans and fumed meat and sausages. Will make one for you when
you come to visit me! And can also send you a recipe to your privat e-mail, if
you want it.

3) Joe, how these cut offs works? I will make an "open"tournment and for sure
will have to eliminate the worst throwers in order to have a better final...

Abraços for you all

Dalmo

PS - I'm talking to people that organizes Rodeos down here to have Knife
Throwing as a part of theyr shows.
Have you Americans tried it? I know Rodeos are Very important in your land....

Hey Gang
The tournament in Atlanta went off without a hitch this weekend. The
weather was beautiful and sunny with about 75 degree temperatures.
We had 34 competitors that included some great throwers like Mike
Bainton, Todd Abrams, Joe Darrah, Ron Thomas, David Smith and Jay
Dunbar along with a bunch of us "less than great" throwers.

I have to say that we had some of the nicest and most generous
people I have ever met at this event. It was truly an honor for me
to be a part of it. Hopefully Todd or I will post some pictures in a
couple days for those of you who couldn't make it.

Thanks to Joe Darrah, Mike Bainton, Jeff Koch, Paul Elliot, and
Bobby Branton there were some great trophies and prizes awarded.
I would also like to thank Mike, Joe, Todd, Ron, David Smith and my
students for helping get all the targets built late Friday night and
for helping me run the tournament on Saturday. I couldn't have done
it without you guys.

We will definitly be trying to do this again next year.

Hi, Angela, I learned a bit os Spanish with mi amigos argentinos, and there
accent is also Completelly different than the one they have in Spain.
But your right, just knowing that wine is vino, beer is Cerveza and Chica is
Girl, you got everything you need.

I also wanna met you all, lets see if I can make it to Austin, I would like
to travel for US two or three weeks before the tournment, would like to
visit some of my friends in theyr houses (New Jersey, New York, Pennsilvanya
and Minnesota). Not just go to Texas, and then take the plane back.
So I must find time, and $...
If you can, send me the pictures of the knives to my other email,
dalmo@... . Would like to see them.

And I believe youre absolutelly right on the entry fees, if they went so
high they will reduce the number of throwers.
And, better than eliminating the loosers in the first step, why not create
"begginners class " in each tournment?

I meant, a begginner wont have the least chance against a seasoned
thrower...so they have to compete to his pals untill learn more.

I will make things easyer in Brazil, my first competition will go only
untill 1 and half spin, cause for further distances I'm much more used than
anyone down here and dont wanna take profit of it.

Nice to talk to you. Hey, are you a Target Girl? My last one suffered a sad
accident, you know, and I need to replace her...(just Joking, Just Joking!).

Abraço

Dalmo

Well, thank you for the speech lesson. I always wondered about that.
Portugese seems like a hard language to pick up. As you say, it's similar to
spanish (kisses=besos) but then a new word will come in and throw me off. Of
course I went to Spain for 2 weeks once and thought I would be alright. Man
was I wrong! The teacher who taught me learned in Mexico. Completely
different Spanish. Then the accent changed from north to south........not
good. But we managed. Cerveza still means beer!!!!! And baile still means
dance. !!
I will send you the pictures that were on e-bay. Someone bought the knives
so the auction is over and I am not sure when they will go back up. I am
working on better pictures for it so it may be a few days. Are you planning
on coming to the States for any of our events? I am sure there are a few
people who would like to meet you. Of course we would rather come to your
Brazilian beaches..........But then again , these men might not like your
topless beaches..........right??? Lol
                                               ~~~~~  Angela~~~~
Hi, Angela, in Brazil they Also destroy forests, cause there is no
But if you Dare to cut a three in your own house youre in trouble.Even if
Language: down here we speak a variation of Portuguese, the Portugueses
(from Portugal)  can understand us and vice-versa, but the accent is very
different.
Its close to Spanish, also, I can understand most of the things they say....
Abraço means "embrace", "hug", and its an affective way to end a letter, a
mail or a phone call, with either female and male friends. For female
friends you can also say "beijos", "kisses" if youre a bit more close to
them.
I saw the Big Bowie Mike owns, but didnt went to Ebay, can you please send
me the link? Joe is great in knife designing, and I know Thunder is great
also, but I never saw one of his knives.
Other task: I tryed and learned Limey Roy's way of throwing, I even made a
set of knives speciffically for it, I Like very much his way, and became
proud of learning it,  but I also like the "normal"spin throwing.
Only, when
I move from one style to the other my poor and not so brilliant brain starts
to burn, cause in
Roys way you actually Use your whrist!
OH, by the way in spin throwing  I use Both the Thumb GRip and the Hammer
Grip, both are easy and good once you got the way.
Looks that I'm a flexible thrower...or a Three Timer (Joe Darrah once
explained me what a Two Timer is...).
Abraço, keep in touch!
PS: Anyway, I finally Found the Pinewood (wont talk about Pinus no more) I
was searching for, and started a new an Better life, they are much softer
than the woods I was using before, what means, more knives sticks!
     Dalmo,
     Thanks for clearing that up. LOL  A few eyebrows went up at
first........
You should come to America...noone gives a damn how many of our forests they
chop down. Of course it's always for a good cause I'm sure...like another
shopping plaza   or sub-division.
By the way, what does the word abracos mean? I'm fairly fluent in Spanish
and even know a little Italian  and can figure French but Brazilian is all
new to me. Always looking to learn something new !!!
                                       ~~~Angela~~~
PS> did you get a chance to get on the ebay ThunderThrowers and see Mike's
knife? Alamo designed one and Joe D. and Thunder designed the other.

Dear friends Angela, Michael

Hope you didnt think what I think you tought when I wrote about Pinus....

"Pinnus"is the Latin name for various specimens of what you call "Pinewood".

But, for example, we dont have Douglas Fir down here. Different specimens.

The Pinewoods we have here are high threes, not too wide, but theyr rounds
can reach around 80 cm or more, 2 and half feet.
The problem is, they have knots. And they are not too easy to afford, cause
there are laws to control theyr cutting.

Sorry for the bad English, I always try to do my best...

Dalmo

PS: Cocobola is almost the same wood as Jacarandá, a brazilian noble wood.
By the way, soon I will start to Export noble woods for handles, and why
not, for bows...(Dalmo is Culture and Unnecessary Informations) .

   lol, those would be about 1 to 3 inch rounds right? it's a rare tree, can

Just wanted to check to see if you have all the info you need from
WildWestPerformers.com. I had a crash on my laptop and lost all of my emails.
Please email me back with any questions you may have.

Games and Entertainment

COWBOY GAMES:

Mechanical bulls: Mechanical bulls are a great way to liven up any party. All
the bulls come with a trained and certified operator and a $1M liability policy,
to which we can name your company as additionally insured. All operators strive
to ensure that every ride is both fun and safe. ($1300-1700) 3 hours

Rodeo Roper: Yee-hah! Move ‘em out. Not just for a country western party, the
Rodeo Roper is a "kick in the pants" for any event. WildWestPerformers.com has
the newest version of this game which features a calf that travels down a 10-20'
long track at adjustable speeds. An actual roping cowboy helps the rider mount
"Trigger,” our trusty horse. Released by a tap of the rider's heel, the calf
flies out from under Trigger to be lassoed by the Buckaroo (that’s you). The
calf resets automatically to speed cowboys and cowgirls through the roundup.
This game gets the crowd whooping and hollering and 40 people per hour can
participate. Rent the Rodeo Roper for a yippee kay yay event! Dimensions (in
ft.): 18 x 10 ($750 - 1000) 3 hours

Quick Draw Competition: Two contestants strap on holsters and six-shooters to
settle disputes, end arguments or vie for a raise with the boss (blank primers
only, of course). They are taught the finer points of the art of the Quick Draw
from real gunslingers and upon a signal from the judge, the first to draw, cock,
and fire wins that round. If you have ever wanted to try your luck in a
showdown, we make it safe and fun. Best 2 out of 3 wins. ($850) 3 hours

Steer Roping: Learn how to rope like a real cowboy. Fake steer heads are
attached to bales of hay, and the players are taught the finer points of roping.
They stand back 10' away from the steer heads and throw the rope. A prize can
be affixed under one (or all) of the steer heads to be awarded to the roper who
is able to successfully lasso the head. ($700) 3 hours

Desperado Photos: We'll provide the costumes, props, backdrop, wanted posters
(for frames), the Photographer and assistant to dress guests or we’ll have
cowboys and saloon girls show up with costumes to provide for your guests and
they will pose with your photographer! Your guests take home a souvenir of the
event. Our quick and easy photo booth makes it a fun time for all to dress up as
a desperado and leave with their wanted poster in hand.
($750) Your photographer
($1200) ours w/ backdrop, costumes, props wanted poster frames and assistant.
3 hours.

Cowboy Hat Toss: An 8'X 8' split rail arena is assembled. Behind it, we place
two large Saguaro cacti with multiple arms. The contestant is handed three
light-weight cowboy hats and given the opportunity to toss the hats at the
cacti. Each hat that lands and stays on an arm wins a prize (provided buy
client). ($600)

Tomahawk Throw: A 6'X 8' arena is set up with an Old West backdrop on to which
are fastened a number of balloons. The player is given, after brief
instruction, 3 actual steel Indian tomahawks to throw at the balloon/backboard.
($700) 3 hours

Cowboy Poker / Blackjack / Texas Hold em’: Gambling the way it was meant to be
done. Western-attired dealers who show you the in’s and out’s of the games make
this fun for seasoned gamblers and tinhorns alike. We supply the dealers, cards,
chips and even tables. Not real gambling.
(Call for price quote)

Horse shoes: Yes, we can supply the classic game, and yes, even for an indoor
event. We’ll even through in someone who knows the real rules to run it if you
like.
($200 / 350 with operator) 3 hours

Kid Coyote Human Quickdraw Machine: The “machine” taunts passersby into a
quickdraw showdown and judges their skill level after the draw. Players strap on
a provided six shooter (equipped with blanks for adults and classic western cap
gun for kids) and shoot it out with Kid Coyote who keeps ‘um riled as he spews
cowboy clichés and put downs, all in fun of course. This hilarious new twist on
the classic challenge is fun for all ages.
($850) 2 hours

Western Paintball Shooting Gallery: Have you ever wanted to participate in a law
enforcement tactical simulation? Now you can and all with a western twist.
Players use paintball guns firing from a station against our outlaws in an array
of scenarios. Returning fire with blanks, the outlaws use cover, take hostages,
dodge “bullets” and gradually increase the skill level. “Target Practice”
“Ambush” “Showdown” and “The Wild Bunch” are some of our most requested games.
This challenging game housed in its own western set makes a great team building
event as each team scores points with its own individual paint color. This one
needs some space, 30’ x 60’ minimum.
($5500) 2.5 hours

Well, thank you for the speech lesson. I always wondered about that. Portugese
seems like a hard language to pick up. As you say, it's similar to spanish
(kisses=besos) but then a new word will come in and throw me off. Of course I
went to Spain for 2 weeks once and thought I would be alright. Man was I wrong!
The teacher who taught me learned in Mexico. Completely different Spanish. Then
the accent changed from north to south........not good. But we managed. Cerveza
still means beer!!!!! And baile still means dance. !!
I will send you the pictures that were on e-bay. Someone bought the knives so
the auction is over and I am not sure when they will go back up. I am working on
better pictures for it so it may be a few days. Are you planning on coming to
the States for any of our events? I am sure there are a few people who would
like to meet you. Of course we would rather come to your Brazilian
beaches..........But then again , these men might not like your topless
beaches..........right??? Lol

Language: down here we speak a variation of Portuguese, the Portugueses

different.
Its close to Spanish, also, I can understand most of the things they say....

Abraço means "embrace", "hug", and its an affective way to end a letter, a
mail or a phone call, with either female and male friends. For female
friends you can also say "beijos", "kisses" if youre a bit more close to
them.

I saw the Big Bowie Mike owns, but didnt went to Ebay, can you please send
me the link? Joe is great in knife designing, and I know Thunder is great
also, but I never saw one of his knives.

Other task: I tryed and learned Limey Roy's way of throwing, I even made a
set of knives speciffically for it, I Like very much his way, and became
proud of learning it, but I also like the "normal"spin throwing.

Only, when
I move from one style to the other my poor and not so brilliant brain starts
to burn, cause in
Roys way you actually Use your whrist!

OH, by the way in spin throwing I use Both the Thumb GRip and the Hammer
Grip, both are easy and good once you got the way.

Looks that I'm a flexible thrower...or a Three Timer (Joe Darrah once
explained me what a Two Timer is...).

Abraço, keep in touch!

PS: Anyway, I finally Found the Pinewood (wont talk about Pinus no more) I
was searching for, and started a new an Better life, they are much softer
than the woods I was using before, what means, more knives sticks!

     Dalmo,
     Thanks for clearing that up. LOL A few eyebrows went up at
first........
You should come to America...noone gives a damn how many of our forests they
chop down. Of course it's always for a good cause I'm sure...like another
shopping plaza   or sub-division.
By the way, what does the word abracos mean? I'm fairly fluent in Spanish
and even know a little Italian and can figure French but Brazilian is all
new to me. Always looking to learn something new !!!
                                       ~~~Angela~~~
PS> did you get a chance to get on the ebay ThunderThrowers and see Mike's
knife? Alamo designed one and Joe D. and Thunder designed the other.
Dear friends Angela, Michael
Hope you didnt think  what I think you tought when I wrote about Pinus....
"Pinnus"is the Latin name for various specimens of what you call "Pinewood".
But, for example, we dont have Douglas Fir down here. Different specimens.
The Pinewoods we have here  are high threes, not too wide, but theyr rounds
can reach around 80 cm or more, 2 and half feet.
The problem is, they have knots. And they are not too easy to afford, cause
there are laws to control theyr cutting.
Sorry for the bad English, I always try to do my best...
Dalmo
PS: Cocobola is almost the same wood as Jacarandá, a brazilian noble wood.
By the way, soon I will start to Export noble woods for handles, and why
not, for bows...(Dalmo is Culture and Unnecessary Informations) .
Amen, brothers !! We had originally planned on the whole family going but it
comes to about $2000 for a long weekend. And now it is my understanding that
even if you pay the competition fee, you may not be able to actually throw !
They put you up against everyone whether it is your fist throw or your
thousandth !! Then if you can't cut it (no pun intended) they think you should
be happy to watch those better than you. Sure, that could be worth $125. I don't
know if that is how the rest of the competitions are, say the IKTHOF, or all the
other letters of the alphabet, but if that's how they are run, I know I'll never
put my money up for competitions.
Ed <aslow@...> wrote:
Hey Thunder,
I agree with that buddy! With Vicky and myself going we are looking at
about the
same thing. Between air flights, motel, car rental, food, etc. we also will
have to
join WWAC @ $30 each and then pay for 2 to get in and add the rates for
competing
a grand is at least the cost for us.
I recently closed a storage place I used and stuck the stuff in my living
room & had my
cable internet reduced just to save cash so we could make it to OK. Any
break for
multiple entries would be a big help for many....not just DirtPoorEds :)
Hi, Ed, I didnt burn my hand, but will soon swallow a fly or a frog, cause dued
In Brazil it uses to Rain a lot, and we are the country in the world with More
Above the damned clouds!
Other task: as youre used to No-conventional throwing, have you tried Roys long
range half spins? They perform very well for me.
And I like the possibillity of walking back or forward to the target without
changing the grip.
Abraços for both of you, and Ed, my Amore, I was just joking- believe it or not,
my lifetime dream is to See Snow, as I wrote a lot of times!
So, I have Envy of you, lucky Ice creamers! (Well, I would like to see snow
Once, not to Live with it for all my winters as you...ha, ha, ha!).
   Here in NJ we barely have a springtime anymore. Winter fades a bit and we
   get rain
   like crazy and then all of a sudden it's 90 degrees outside!
   I hope you get sunburned on your throwing hand and your knife melts in the hot
   sun. LOL not really - but I hope you swallow a fly :))
LoL Chuck,
I love a man that understands a bit of applied psychology! The gist of it is
understood. I can't use the ski part due to my left leg being basically rebuilt
in 2000. That's when I ended up getting fat after 12 months in bed and 6 more
in rehab, but I can use plenty of other "interests"  :)
Hey Ed
You have to be a bit canny about having an indoor target.
Never say you want one.
Deveop an interest in skiing and leave some catalogs around with the prices for
ski equipment,lesson
s and lodge rental and  costs.
After some hot debate,remind her that there's not a lot to do around the house
in the cold weather.
Then you do a bit of sulking and whining (really abject whining gets you a long
way).
After about a week of this reluctantly settle for an indoor target.
PS One of the secrets of an indoor target is to put 4 by 8 sheets of plywood or
some such material
a couple of feet from each side of the target or to the target itself if space
is a problem.The
plywood faces away from the target and acts to stop the bad bounces when the
knife or hawk hits the
edge of a round and take off at right angles.
Dalmo says
      It's hot as hell, the sun is bright, the sky is  blue and it's perfect for
throwing.
In Indiana it's cold as the devil, the sun is bright altho it's hiding behind an
overcast sky, the
sky is blue altho it's hiding behind thick grey clouds and it's perfect for
throwing.
I have a great target with 3 tree rounds in my garage and I can throw for up to
21 feet with my
back against the overhead door.
I can look out in the yard and see my beautiful outdoor target which I have laid
on its side for
the winter.
I am tempted to stand it up but the ground is too mushy from all the rain and
snow.
I am throwing several times a day in my garage and great improvement has been
noted.
My ping pong table is in use and this winter altho the most severe in  years,
has been very
enjoyable to me.
Throwing, ping pong, rides on my bike and tennis to look forward to this summer.
As my friend in San Diego likes to say, "Life is good"
O.K.  I totally agree that you need to practice, practice, practice as much as
Mother Nature will allow. But I think the next person who says it in front of me
,they may get bopped in the nose!!  :):)    yes , we are jealous of those who
live in drier climates. Just might have to do something about that !!
Ed <aslow@...> wrote:
Chad,
Exactly right :)
We had 2 whole entire warmish days here and I was out throwing. An older member
came up and was watching me and I got him to try a few knives from 12 feet.
He said
he couldn't understand how the heck I was doing it so smoothly and using
almost no
effort and they were sticking so deeply. I laughed and told him, " It's
simple. You go
outside every day you possibly can and throw a few hundred or a few
thousand knives
and after a few years you can walk up and do it without thinking. The
muscles do the
throw and the brain just goes along for the ride."
I once saw a buddy of mine that was a cop shoot 6 cans off a railing with
his .357 firing
6 shots so fast I knew he wasn't aiming. I asked him how he did that and he
told me he
had spent the last 2 years training and aiming so now his gun was trained
to do the aiming
for him :) It was funny, but true in the sense that practice teaches the
muscles to act/react
with no brain getting in the way.
Hi, Ed, my Passion:
thanks for the information, I believe I can find some corporate sponsorships
down here.
The Cold Steel is sponsored for a knifemaker, and as I understood you Have to
use theyr knives, so its not an "open"tournment.
I'm a bit Better from 1 and half spins than from 1 spin (actually, a bit better
from 2 and half than from 2), thats cause I slightly Prefer blade throwing!
Still wanna know how these Cutt offs works...What means "second defeat"?
Whats the difference between CUSKTC and the Gold Cup? Both are managed by Mike
Alamo, as long as I understood...
   Dalmo mi amigo mi amore :)
   I assume you're asking about Corporate Sponsors. The only one I have
   ever heard sponsored by a corporation was last years Cold Steel Challenge
   in California.
   I know that Mike Bainton personally sponsors one of the events in Austin
   each year - I think it's the CUSKTC, but I may be wrong. I think that the Gold
   Cup is sponsored by the IKTHoF, which I believe is a not-for-profit
   organization.
Well it's nice to meet you Rick.
When I was in SC at Bobby's throw, I came 1 point from beating
Alamos score at the 2 spin. I came in second. In the 1 spin I came
in 11th. Overall In the knife (both distances) I think I came in
3rd. So I'd have to disagree with what you said above.
I wish I could be in Atlanta for the tournament.
Todd, Mike, Ron and Jumpin' Joe, I miss you guys!!!
Well I don't really miss Ron(CS) that much...
We had a HAKS event last weekend at one of the members new target
ranges. The target area is over 60 feet long.
I stepped out to 51 feet to try to throw a long distance Hawk.
To my amazement, the first throw I did cut the card in half. It made
me feel sooooo good!!!!
We had a great day. We usually have a contest, and on the last throw
Cross Sticks was 1 point ahead of me. If I stick it, I tie him, If I
hit the card, I will win. CS started to make me laugh in attempt to
befuddle my throwing. I took a deep breath and ended up with a
center cut on the card!!! 3 points!
It made me feel soooooo good! HaHaHaHaHa!!!!!
Bill, good luck with the tournament, Maybe I'll see you in Austin.
later
