Charlie i have a 1966 souvener yearbook when D.C. STADIUM had open, in the year
book it gives the histroy of the Senators from 1859-1965 it tells when the ball
club started it has a old photo of WASHINGTON vs CHICAGO in 1888 at the old
swampoodle grounds, north capitol street and Mass Ave. northeast. In the photo
it tells about a tall skinny gentleman behind the bat was chiristened corelius
McGillicuddy (Connie Mack) The pitcher with the Walter Johnson follow thur is
believed to be Hank O'Day, later a National League umpire but then one of the
best hurlers in baseball. In the photo it shows the freight cars outside the
leftfield fence are on a side track of the main line of the Baltimore &Ohio
Railroad. This particular terrain was filled in and is now the western part of
the present Union Station. In 1890 the Senators played at "Gentlemen's Driving
Park", on four mile run a approximateiy the spot which is now the south end of
National Airport in Alexandria, Va. at that time it was
against the law to play baseball on sunday in Washington D.C.

George Mason University, studying professional writing

undertaken. I'm going to try to write a historical
fiction story based on some facet of the real history
of the Washington Senators. Its going to be an
original writing, but it has to be based on concrete
historical fact. I'm trying to figure out what moment
during the Senators' history would be the most
interesting to write about. I've thought about either
when Clark Griffith was debating whether to integrate,
while faced with struggling attendance in the
post-Depression era. Or possible the moment Calvin
Griffith finally moved the team. Either way I'm, at
this point, fairly ignorant about the team's history.
I'm interested in possibly talking to some folks
who've spent time in Griffith Stadium as I'm going to
write the story using as many authentic sights and
sounds of Griffith Stadium as I can. Any help you can provide is
greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Charlie Morrison
