Folks, I don't know how many of you are familiar with Arcadia
Publishing. They put out books of local or regional interest which
usually consist of old post card or photographic views of a target
subject.
This past week, with a Borders Books Christmas gift card burning a
hole in my wallet, I ventured to the Borders store in Waldorf, MD. I
stumbled across a book titled "Baseball In Washington, DC" by Frank
Ceresi, Mark Rucker and Carol McMains. Copyrighted in 2002, with the
book having been reprinted in 2002, 2003 & 2004 its possible that
many of you have already either seen it or picked up a copy.
However, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's worth the
$20.00. The book is divided into 7 chapters with many photos of the
original Senators, the Homestead Grays, the expansion Senators with
the last chapter being devoted to past presidents and other statesmen
and politicians who were involved with baseball in some way.
I was a bit disappointed with the lack of photos in the expansion
Senators chapter (the team I remember) but this shortcoming is more
than outweighed by the numerous photos of the original Senators,
Homestead Grays and views of Griffith Stadium.
Only one glaring error that I've uncovered so far-a photo of Dutch
Leonard taken during his wartime service in France is dated Dec. 26,
1944 with the photo caption stating "The photo was taken less than
three weeks after D-Day." Of course, the D-Day Invasion started on
June 6, 1944 so the photo would have been taken about 6 1/2 months
after D-Day.
Aside from this one chronological error, the book is good with photos
of players like Bobo Newsome, George Case, Bobby Allison, Harmon
Killebrew, the Championship team of 1924 and the pennant winners of
1933. Of course, other Senators greats like Walter Johnson, Sam Rice,
Clark Griffith and one of my favorites, Moe Berg, are shown.
Well worth the $20.00 (actually $19.99 plus tax for your local
jurisdiction).

PS-I have no connection to Arcadia Publishing or the authors but
thought I'd alert some of you "Senators faithful" to the existence of
this book in the event you're not already aware of it.
