June 14, 2005
Capturing the NCAA Division I 400-meter title in record time
apparently helped UCLA's Monique Henderson earn college track and
field female Athlete of the Year honors yesterday.
Henderson, who graduates Sunday, edged Texas' Marshevet Hooker,
Tennessee's Tianna Madison and USC's Virginia Powell after voting by
1,000 member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards
program, now in its 29th year.
"It's a huge honor," said the Morse High graduate. "I know Jackie
Joyner-Kersee won it previously, and I was a little surprised
because all the other finalists were multi-event athletes at the
NCAAs."
Although she ran just one event, Henderson set an NCAA meet record,
winning the 400 by more than seven-tenths of a second in a school
record and personal best 50.10 seconds Saturday in Sacramento.
Although Henderson limited herself to that single event, her first
individual NCAA title, all season she ran the 200 and 400 as well as
both relay events for the Bruins.
"I'm sure they take the whole year into consideration," said
Henderson, who will compete in the U.S. National Championships
starting June 23 in Carson in hopes of qualifying for the World
Championships the first week of August in Helsinki, Finland.
She also is in the running for the NCAA female Athlete of the Year
honors which will be announced June 29.

If you followed the l960s then you remember Bob Hayes. To this day I
believe he was the fastest guy ever. His relay leg in Tokyo, getting
the stick in last place and passing all the worlds best sprinters to

come from third to first, and he wasn't very far behind, either.
Hayes also won the l00 meters by two/tenths, the largest margin of
victory in history.

Sounds like you would have a lot to bring to the table. The best
thing to do for now is to post a date and time you would like to
hold a chat and wait for people to respond that they will be there.
Depending on when it is, I may be able to stop in....Give us a few
days notice at least. Until then, go ahead and drop some topics. I
am more familiar with the Athletes of today but am always ready to
learn about athletes of the past. As you have noticed, Ato Boldon
has been my favorite athlete for the past decade. I am slowly
begining to embrace Asafa as his heir apparent. On the female side,
the future is BRIGHT. Monique, Tonique and Sanya lead the way for
me....along with Lalova and Lauryn. Gotta love Alyson, too...
Man, I'm glad SOMEONE appreciated my OG LIST. LaTasha is drop dead
gorgeous..... but there is something about Mohini that has me
singin' the hook on that Lil Flip feat. Lea song....
I feel you on every one of them yo.Especially on La Tasha!!!!
