Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins won their
arbitration case Friday with left-hander Johan
Santana, who will get a raise from $335,000 to $1.6
million instead of $2.45 million.

Santana, 12-3 with a 3.07 ERA last year, began in the
bullpen before moving into the rotation in the summer
and winding up as the Twins' top starter for the
playoffs. He'll likely head into spring training as
the ace, followed by Brad Radke and Kyle Lohse.

"The only thing that comes out of this is whether you
win or lose," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said.
"We happened to prevail in this case, so we're not
celebrating in any sense. It's time to move on."

Owners have won three of five cases thus far, and five
players remain scheduled for hearings next week.

Among them is Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz,
who asked for a raise from $1.75 million to $3.6
million. Minnesota offered $2.5 million.

By ANDY KENT, ankent@...

February 10, 2004

FORT MYERS — Their uniforms might have changed, but
for a handful of former Minnesota Twins the lure of
the practice fields at the Lee County Sports Complex
remains too strong to ignore.

Left-handed pitcher Eric Milton, traded to the
Philadelphia Phillies in December, sat in the dugout
Monday morning next to Twins strength and conditioning
coach Randy Popple and watched ex-Twin Brian Buchanan
throw batting practice.

Milton bought a home in Fort Myers last year and has
no intentions of selling it, or of giving up his
offseason routine.

"We work out at the gym and it's me and Buck
(Buchanan) and (former catcher) A.J. (Pierzynski) and
(former outfielder) Dustan Mohr and none of us play
for the Twins anymore," said Milton, 29, who missed
all but the last week of the 2003 season with a knee
injury. "So it's kind of funny here we are working out
with the Twins' strength coach.

"That's just the way it goes. It's baseball."

Naples High graduate Jeff Smith also is a part of that
group, even though he is more than one year removed
from being part of the Twins organization. Smith, 28,
was one of a long line of catchers behind Pierzynski
until after the 2002 season, when he signed with the
Boston Red Sox.

This past offseason, Smith inked a deal with the Texas
Rangers that will take him to his first spring
training away from Southwest Florida. The Rangers
train in Arizona. Smith leaves one week from today and
is scheduled to report on Feb. 19.

"The group of guys we have out here right now with us,
including current Twins like (Michael) Cuddyer, (Mike)
Restovich, Lew Ford, Joe Mauer, that's what you want
to be around," Smith said. "They're just all great
guys. I've played the game, now this is my ninth year,
and they're all great guys. I don't want to get away
from them."

Pierzynski and Mohr were both traded to the San
Francisco Giants in December, and Buchanan was traded
to the San Diego Padres in the middle of the 2002
season. Everyone in the group except for Milton came
up together through the Twins' minor league system,
but Milton was traded to Minnesota by the New York
Yankees in 1998.

Now that Milton is getting ready to begin his first
season in the National League, the soft-spoken but
hard- throwing pitcher said he can't concern himself
with what might have been had the Twins decided to
hold on to him.

Instead Milton is looking forward to not having to
face the designated hitter anymore and playing on
grass in a new stadium in Philadelphia.

"For five years I put up 200 innings and 30 starts so
I'm looking forward to getting back to that, being out
there every five days," Milton said of starting the
season 100 percent healthy again. "I wish them well
but they're going to have a tough road I think.

That's just my feeling. But I give my best to
everybody that I played with, it was a pleasure."

And for one more week at least, the gang will meet in
the morning on the field adjacent to the stadium where
they shared so many spring training experiences. Then
they will head their separate ways for separate
clubhouses.

"It's all part of the business and we know that,"
Smith said. "But we all laugh about how things work
out somehow and talk about when we might end up back
on the same team."

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - Jose Offerman agreed Monday to a minor
league contract the Minnesota Twins, who have an
opening for a utility infielder.

Offerman's deal includes an invitation to major league
spring training camp, which opens begins in two weeks.

Denny Hocking became a free agent after last season
and signed with Colorado. Among the possible
replacements the Twins will have in camp are Offerman,
Nick Punto, Augie Ojeda and Jason Bartlett.

Offerman, 35, spent last season with Bridgeport
(Conn.) of the independent Atlantic League. He last
appeared in the majors in 2002, when he hit .232 in
284 at-bats for Boston and Seattle.

A two-time All-Star, Offerman has a .274 career
average. He broke into the major leagues with Los
Angeles in 1990 and became a starting shortstop in
1992.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Offerman played
for the Dodgers until 1996, spent three seasons with
Kansas City and then went to Boston in 1999.

Swing could get two top Twins prospects

By Jeff Wendland,
Staff sports writer

Seven of the Minnesota Twins' top 10 prospects,
according to Baseball America, have played for Quad
City. Two more may be on their way this summer.

Regarded as one of baseball's top minor-league
organizations, as many as six of those 10 are ticketed
for the major leagues this season, while two of the
youngest hope to use The Swing of the Quad Cities as
their jumping board this season.

Speedy centerfielder Denard Spann will likely open
this season as the centerfielder for The Swing. The
Twins' first-round pick in the 2002 June Draft is
called the fastest player in the organization by B.A.
and is rated at the organization's No. 7 prospect.

In Rookie League Elizabethton last season, Spann hit
.271 and stole 14 bases in 50 games.

"When we scouted Denard out of high school he reminded
us a lot of Kenny Loftron," said Rob Anthony, the
Twins director of baseball operations. "He can really
fly, he's a true centerfielder and he is a true
leadoff hitter. He's still learning to steal bases,
but I expect he'll create a lot of excitement for you
guys.

"He had an OK season last year and he's going to be a
lot better this year now that he's adjusted to pro
baseball. He never had to battle through slumps and
injuries (twisted ankle) and he wasn't certain how to
deal with that.

"He was good at end of season and in Instructional
League. He'll be the centerfielder and leadoff hitter
there this season."

Meanwhile, third baseman Matt Moses is rated No. 3 in
the Twins' organization. The 2003 first-round pick
played in just 18 games with the GCL Twins last season
due to minor heart surgery. He did hit .385 and had a
.492 slugging average.

"Matt has a chance to start there, we'd love it if he
did," said Anthony. "The key is that he needs the
games and he needs to prove he belongs at that level.

"Everything is good with his health. He can really
hit. He can hit for power and he's got great
discipline. Matt's got a chance to be a plus fielder,
but needs to work on that."

Swing president Kevin Krause is thrilled about the
potential of having two big-time prospects in the
Quad-Cities this season.

"They're extremely high on Spann and Moses and we'd
love to have them here," said Krause. "The biggest
issue with Moses is he may not start the season with
us due to the heart situation and not getting enough
games last season. I know they love his bat and his
attitude.

"With Denard, that should be great for the fans. We
haven't had a lot of speed, so it'll be fun to have
someone like Spann who creates things with his legs.
That's exciting from a fan's perspective."

Of the other eight in the Twins' Top 10 prospects
list, seven came through the Quad-Cities and several
have a great chance to start the season with the
Twins.

Catcher Joe Mauer (2002 River Bandits) is No. 1; first
baseman/designated hitter Justin Morneau (2001) is No.
2; Moses is third; pitcher J.D. Durbin (2002) is
fourth; pitcher Jesse Crain (2002) is fifth; shortstop
Jason Bartlett (acquired in a trade) is sixth; Moses
is seventh; outfielder Jason Kubel (2002) is eighth;
pitcher Grant Balfour (1999) is ninth; and outfielder
Michael Restovich (1999) is 10th.

Mauer, Morneau, Durbin, Crain, Balfour and Restovich
have legitimate shots to make the big club this
season.

"You don't see any guys from 2003 (Bandits) on the
list, but don't be surprised if (pitcher) Scott Baker
isn't there soon," said Anthony.

Stadiums get one-man cheering section
http://www.startribune.com/stories/509/4354361.html

On the first day of the legislative session, there had
to be stadium theater. Larry Spooner obliged, playing
the role of lonely booster.

On the south steps of the Capitol, Spooner, 43, a
warehouse supervisor from Plymouth, set up a faux
tailgating environment, replete with two 20-foot,
purple-and-gold banners, his purple 1988 Mercury
Tracer station wagon and his purple outfit to protect
him from the falling snow.

His goal: "Set a positive tone. Everything is anti-,
anti-. I say, 'All work and no play turns Minnesota
into North Dakota.' "

Spooner's vision: two new stadiums, one each for the
Twins and Vikings, funded in "creative ways."

One banner took off on the credit card commercials
about "priceless" things. It referenced the long lines
at the Metrodome during Vikings games:

"2 Vikings tickets, $130; Food and beverages, $60; NOT
MISSING HALF THE GAME WAITING AT THE RESTROOMS . . .
PRICELESS."

Shovel in hand, Spooner acted out his stadium dream.

"Let's get this going, guys," he hollered to no one
but himself. "Pour the cement!"

Meanwhile, the final report of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's
Stadium Screening Committee was presented to the
governor Monday afternoon. The report and all
supporting documents that the committee reviewed and
produced are posted at
http://www.stadium.state.mn.us.Jay Weiner

Twins agree to $820,000 deal with Romero
ss/sports/baseball/mlb/minnesota_twins/7856445.htm

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins avoided salary
arbitration with left-handed reliever J.C. Romero by
agreeing Monday to an $820,000, one-year contract.

Romero, 27, struggled last season after being one of
Minnesota's best pitchers in 2002, when he established
career-highs in wins (nine), earned run average
(1.91), appearances (81), innings pitched (81) and
strikeouts (76).

Last season, he was 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA in 73
appearances. He had 50 strikeouts and walked 42
batters. Romero has a career record of 14-13 with a
4.76 ERA and 219 strikeouts.

This year, he'll be counted on to help lead a bullpen
that lost All-Star closer Eddie Guardado and ace setup
man LaTroy Hawkins.

Romero, who made $325,000 last season, had asked for
$925,000 after filing for salary arbitration and the
Twins had offered $625,000. In addition to his salary,
he would get a $5,000 bonus for appearing in 70 games.

Left-hander Johan Santana and first baseman Doug
Mientkiewicz remain scheduled for hearings.

It's a cute idea, I'll say that for it. Does it work?
I don't know.

The site encourages letter writing to your adopted

(Maybe I'll adopt someone once we figure out who's

This site came to my attention in a relatively negative way. Having

Not believing in omens I'll stay a member and root for the T-Wolves
and Wild.

Can't beleive McCombs is keeping Tice though. Linnahan has to go
however!

Well, anyways, hi everyone.

I placed a set of 100 DIFFERENT TWINS players on Yahoo Auctions.
I'm getting rid of all my cards.
More to come soon.
If you save a certain player or team (all sports) email me at danburry@...
and I'll let you know what I have.
I have about 230,000 cards and about 300 graded cards.
Be patient and I'll run a search for you. Meanwhile check the set on Yahoo
Auctions.

KG, THud, Spree, Sammy C, Kandi, EJ, Wally, depth off the
bench.....size, "d", rebounding, open court, half court...our squad
is as stacked as I've ever seen it (or hoped it would be). This maybe
our year to really make some noise. The Kings MAYBE more talented
(although I'm not about to give it up to them yet) but they can't
play d with us. Nuf said?

KG, Spree, Sammy C., THud, Kandi, Wally, EJ, and the young fella
Ebi...Has this team ever been deeper? Watch for the camp buzz on the
