As Christmas is once again upon us and a lot of
us Rovers supporters are home who are normally away.

A lot of us only get to hear what goes on with the
Rovers via websites and these forums.

Therefore I
think it would be a nice idea for all the people who
frequent the forums and sites (be they readers,
contributors or whatever) to have a Christmas drink prior to
the Cobh game 22nd!!!

Anyone know what time
the kick off is set for??? If you have any
suggestions for a pub lets hear them (Harloes/ O'Neills
etc)

It would be nice to put faces to some of the name
tags!

Don't be shy, post any ideas on the forum or mail me
and I will mail everyone with the details for the
drinks before hte end of the week!

Talking of pictures, Its el gunners 25th birthday
on Thursday (hapy b/day me) and I had a big party
over here in Manchester!! which was very good. One of
the attendee's was a certain Glasgow bhoy called
Gerry Kelly from the Willie McStay treble winning
squad.

Anyway Gerry "horse" Kelly is a friend of mine but he
was telling me at about 7am in the morning after a
hard night drinking that he has nothing left from that
season only his medals. When I am home at christmas I am
going to try and get one of those EBS posters that were
going around after the treble, but in the mean time has
anyone got any photos that I can forward on to him
please!!

mail me at

Dempsey double earns victory for Waterford over
Sligo

Waterford United 2
Sligo Rovers
0
NOT for the first time this season Gary Dempsey
proved Waterford’s match winner in the Regional Sports
Centre last night.
The diminutive 20-year-old
midfielder from Wexford, who signed a three-year contract
with Waterford last week, opened his account with a
beautifully taken goal on the stroke of
half-time.

Dempsey passed to Wayne Fitzgerald and ran on to hammer
the return low past John Healy from just outside the
area. The goal proved the highlight of a first half
littered with yellow cards, three to Sligo and two to
Waterford.

Early on, Rafael Cretaro sent a 20-yard pile driver
inches over the Waterford bar, while Barry Wood shot
over from a good position at the other
end.

Dempsey put the game beyond the reach of the visitors
after 62 minutes. He took a pass from Eric Bradley and
unleashed a dipping volley from 25 yards that left Healy
helpless.

WATERFORD UNITED: Binder, Breen, Frost, Dempsey, Leahy,

Somebody asked recently, following Rovers great
5-0 win in Limerick, when was the last time Sligo won
so convincingly away from home - and it brought to
mind a story I had almost forgotten.
Again, it
involved Sligo Rovers and Limerick and yet again the
scoreline was a handsome 5-0 in favour of
Rovers.
Limerick then played their games at the ‘Markets Field’
and were managed by FA Cup medal winner Ewan
Fenton.
The former Blackpool man played in defence alongside
one of the greatest players ever to come out of
Limerick, Al Finnucane.
The game was played on Holy
Thursday and I will never forget the marvellous display of
our own Jimmy Burnside.
In a fabulous one-man
show, he netted all five goals, and tore the much
vaunted Limerick defence apart.
Needless to say he was
the talk of the place and coming back on the bus we
were imagining the headlines for the following day.
Then the awful realisation that, the next day being
Good Friday, there would be no newspapers.
I will
never forget Jimmy’s face.

And that was the
case. We had to wait for the local newspapers the
following week to read of his brilliant
performance!

Can’t get away from Sligo Rovers who are quickly
becoming something of an enigma.
On Tuesday, they
produced a fine first-half against Athlone only to slip
into mediocrity for most of the second-half. A
marvellous header, from the much maligned Seán Flannery
(from a great Hutchison pull-back) was enough to send
the crowd home happy.

That is, of course, if
you are willing to overlook a pathetic refereeing
performance from Tommy McAree, who insisted on ignoring the
advantage rule.
Saturday night, it was Cobh, and a
trouncing at the hands of Ramblers who are in the nether
regions of the First Division.
I would say they have
Don O’Riordan scratching his head and wondering
what’s coming next. They are certainly keeping the rest
of us guessing!

It’s a typically dogged first division match.
Despite Sligo Rovers valiant attempt to embellish the
contest with some degree of sophistication, it looks as
if Athlone’s dubious ambition of strangling the life
out of the game will earn them a share of the spoils.
But just when fortune appears to have deserted the
brave, the victory Rovers adventurous approach deserves
is delivered by Sean Flannery.

Rising
majestically to connect with Mark Hutchison’s tantalising
cross, Flannery dispatches a header of awesome power and
precision low to the ‘keeper’s left. Game over.

It’s been a hard slog for the twenty-two years old
striker. He won a League Cup medal with Rovers while still
a student at Summerhill College but, generally, the
good days have been the exception rather than the rule
as a succession of managers discarded the
youngster’s exciting potential in favour of the latest
import.

“I was a local lad yet I always felt like an
outsider. It was as if I didn’t belong. I would get a
chance in the first team and do well. Then somebody
would be brought in on loan and I would be dropped
again. No matter how well I played, there wasn’t any
respect for me. It was very frustrating”, he
recalls.

He wasn’t the only promising local player that
slipped through the net as the club’s full-time
professional policy mitigated against the fostering of
home-grown talent.

“There were players coming in to
the club who really didn’t want to play for Rovers.
But they were in the team and the local lads were
left out. The atmosphere wasn’t very good and it
affected everybody. Even the fans sensed that things
weren’t right and began to stay away. When I left last
year, I didn’t think I would ever come back”, he
explains.

A product of the famous Summerhill soccer academy
under David Pugh, Flannery was one of the stars of the
multi-talented College team which won the All-Ireland Schools
Championship in 1998. Conor O’Grady, Aubrey Dolan and Ciaran
Martyn, all now established National League players, were
among his team mates.

Ten months ago, however,
he was ready to turn his back on Rovers for good.
And if wasn’t for Don O’Riordan, he would almost
certainly be playing soccer elsewhere now.

In a
reversal of the situation which Flannery experienced in
his early days at the club, young local lads are
encouraged to express themselves with the prospect of a
decent chance of making the grade if they’re good
enough. Even though he’s still in his early twenties,
Flannery is one of the more experienced players at the
club.

“As one of the older players in a very young squad,
there is probably extra responsibility on me to help
the young lads along. I’m happy enough with that
because I experienced the other side of the coin when I
first came to the club and there was nobody there to
help me.

“Now, the atmosphere is so different.
The team spirit in the squad is terrific and we all
help each other.

“We’ve got a very young squad
and we’ve made an encouraging start but there’s a
long way to go and people will have to be patient and
not expect too much too soon.

“We’re building
a good foundation for the future and no matter what
happens this season, I believe the club is heading in the
right direction”, Flannery maintains.

The
Champion
