As Christmas is once again upon us and a lot of
us Rovers supporters are home who are normally away.
<br><br>A lot of us only get to hear what goes on with the
Rovers via websites and these forums.<br><br>Therefore I
think it would be a nice idea for all the people who
frequent the forums and sites (be they readers,
contributors or whatever) to have a Christmas drink prior to
the Cobh game 22nd!!!<br><br>Anyone know what time
the kick off is set for??? If you have any
suggestions for a pub lets hear them (Harloes/ O'Neills
etc)<br><br>It would be nice to put faces to some of the name
tags!<br><br>Don't be shy, post any ideas on the forum or mail me
and I will mail everyone with the details for the
drinks before hte end of the week!

Talking of pictures, Its el gunners 25th birthday
on Thursday (hapy b/day me) and I had a big party
over here in Manchester!! which was very good. One of
the attendee's was a certain Glasgow bhoy called
Gerry Kelly from the Willie McStay treble winning
squad.<br><br>Anyway Gerry "horse" Kelly is a friend of mine but he
was telling me at about 7am in the morning after a
hard night drinking that he has nothing left from that
season only his medals. When I am home at christmas I am
going to try and get one of those EBS posters that were
going around after the treble, but in the mean time has
anyone got any photos that I can forward on to him
please!!<br><br>mail me at
leonard.gunning@...<br><br>Thanks
Yes I definitely have a picture, just to get my hands on it (gathering dust in
the attic maybe).I'll have a look anyway, let me know if you get one in the
meantime.
has anyone got a picture of the team that won the
cup in 83? i have the 94, but i'd love a copy of the
83, even if it is only on a computer(i will make
these people in dublin appreciate sligo rovers, even if
it is through a screensaver!)<br>post them or email
me if ya do!<br>thanx!
John Skeffington played for rovers in the
80's.<br>If you check your local newspapers and look up the
fixtures for the nightowls league in the sports complex,
you'll find him playing for Fiddlers Creek.

Michael Holt was St Patrick's Athletic's hero at the
Showgrounds last night as he grabbed the only goal of the
game to send Sligo Rovers crashing out of the League
Cup.<br><br>Holt struck in the 56th minute, tapping in from close
range after Kevin Doyle had intercepted an attempted
clearance by Sligo 'keeper Danny O'Leary. O'Leary was an
inspirational figure for Sligo in the first half, producing a
string of terrific saves to keep the eager Saints at
bay. <br><br>Sligo Rovers: O'Leary, Rossiter, Lally,

proved Waterford’s match winner in the Regional Sports
Centre last night. <br>The diminutive 20-year-old
midfielder from Wexford, who signed a three-year contract
with Waterford last week, opened his account with a
beautifully taken goal on the stroke of
half-time.<br><br>Dempsey passed to Wayne Fitzgerald and ran on to hammer
the return low past John Healy from just outside the
area. The goal proved the highlight of a first half
littered with yellow cards, three to Sligo and two to
Waterford.<br><br>Early on, Rafael Cretaro sent a 20-yard pile driver
inches over the Waterford bar, while Barry Wood shot
over from a good position at the other
end.<br><br>Dempsey put the game beyond the reach of the visitors
after 62 minutes. He took a pass from Eric Bradley and
unleashed a dipping volley from 25 yards that left Healy
helpless.<br><br>WATERFORD UNITED: Binder, Breen, Frost, Dempsey, Leahy,

Somebody asked recently, following Rovers great
5-0 win in Limerick, when was the last time Sligo won
so convincingly away from home - and it brought to
mind a story I had almost forgotten.<br>Again, it
involved Sligo Rovers and Limerick and yet again the
scoreline was a handsome 5-0 in favour of
Rovers.<br>Limerick then played their games at the ‘Markets Field’
and were managed by FA Cup medal winner Ewan
Fenton.<br>The former Blackpool man played in defence alongside
one of the greatest players ever to come out of
Limerick, Al Finnucane.<br>The game was played on Holy
Thursday and I will never forget the marvellous display of
our own Jimmy Burnside.<br>In a fabulous one-man
show, he netted all five goals, and tore the much
vaunted Limerick defence apart.<br>Needless to say he was
the talk of the place and coming back on the bus we
were imagining the headlines for the following day.
<br>Then the awful realisation that, the next day being
Good Friday, there would be no newspapers.<br>I will
never forget Jimmy’s face. <br><br>And that was the
case. We had to wait for the local newspapers the
following week to read of his brilliant
performance!<br><br>Can’t get away from Sligo Rovers who are quickly
becoming something of an enigma.<br>On Tuesday, they
produced a fine first-half against Athlone only to slip
into mediocrity for most of the second-half. A
marvellous header, from the much maligned Seán Flannery
(from a great Hutchison pull-back) was enough to send
the crowd home happy.<br><br>That is, of course, if
you are willing to overlook a pathetic refereeing
performance from Tommy McAree, who insisted on ignoring the
advantage rule.<br>Saturday night, it was Cobh, and a
trouncing at the hands of Ramblers who are in the nether
regions of the First Division.<br>I would say they have
Don O’Riordan scratching his head and wondering
what’s coming next. They are certainly keeping the rest
of us guessing!
It’s a typically dogged first division match.
Despite Sligo Rovers valiant attempt to embellish the
contest with some degree of sophistication, it looks as
if Athlone’s dubious ambition of strangling the life
out of the game will earn them a share of the spoils.
But just when fortune appears to have deserted the
brave, the victory Rovers adventurous approach deserves
is delivered by Sean Flannery.<br><br>Rising
majestically to connect with Mark Hutchison’s tantalising
cross, Flannery dispatches a header of awesome power and
precision low to the ‘keeper’s left. Game over.
<br><br>It’s been a hard slog for the twenty-two years old
striker. He won a League Cup medal with Rovers while still
a student at Summerhill College but, generally, the
good days have been the exception rather than the rule
as a succession of managers discarded the
youngster’s exciting potential in favour of the latest
import.<br><br>“I was a local lad yet I always felt like an
outsider. It was as if I didn’t belong. I would get a
chance in the first team and do well. Then somebody
would be brought in on loan and I would be dropped
again. No matter how well I played, there wasn’t any
respect for me. It was very frustrating”, he
recalls.<br><br>He wasn’t the only promising local player that
slipped through the net as the club’s full-time
professional policy mitigated against the fostering of
home-grown talent.<br><br>“There were players coming in to
the club who really didn’t want to play for Rovers.
But they were in the team and the local lads were
left out. The atmosphere wasn’t very good and it
affected everybody. Even the fans sensed that things
weren’t right and began to stay away. When I left last
year, I didn’t think I would ever come back”, he
explains.<br><br>A product of the famous Summerhill soccer academy
under David Pugh, Flannery was one of the stars of the
multi-talented College team which won the All-Ireland Schools
Championship in 1998. Conor O’Grady, Aubrey Dolan and Ciaran
Martyn, all now established National League players, were
among his team mates.<br><br>Ten months ago, however,
he was ready to turn his back on Rovers for good.
And if wasn’t for Don O’Riordan, he would almost
certainly be playing soccer elsewhere now.<br><br>In a
reversal of the situation which Flannery experienced in
his early days at the club, young local lads are
encouraged to express themselves with the prospect of a
decent chance of making the grade if they’re good
enough. Even though he’s still in his early twenties,
Flannery is one of the more experienced players at the
club.<br><br>“As one of the older players in a very young squad,
there is probably extra responsibility on me to help
the young lads along. I’m happy enough with that
because I experienced the other side of the coin when I
first came to the club and there was nobody there to
help me.<br><br>“Now, the atmosphere is so different.
The team spirit in the squad is terrific and we all
help each other.<br><br>“We’ve got a very young squad
and we’ve made an encouraging start but there’s a
long way to go and people will have to be patient and
not expect too much too soon.<br><br>“We’re building
a good foundation for the future and no matter what
happens this season, I believe the club is heading in the
right direction”, Flannery maintains.<br><br>The

In a new departure for the club, Sligo Rovers
have signed a seventeen years old player on a soccer
scholarship.<br><br>As part of the deal, Rovers will pay the college
fees of Jason Moran, a student at NUIG,
Galway.<br><br>“This is a new initiative for the club and shows our
determination to secure the best young talent in the region and
to help them develop their football and academic
ability”, explained Rovers boss, Don O’Riordan.<br><br>The
manager is delighted to have secured the midfielder’s
signature and believes he will make a valuable contribution
to Rovers over the next few years.<br><br>O’Riordan
witnessed Moran’s ability at first hand last season when
the youngster made his League of Ireland debut with
Galway United.<br><br>“Jason is a highly promising young
player who has a bright future in the game. He’s a
left-sided player and he will bring a lot of quality to our
squad. We’re delighted to have him on our books”, said
the manager.<br><br>Moran will go straight into the
squad for Saturday’s game against Kilkenny City at
Buckley Park.
Sligo Rovers manager, Don O’Riordan, has
expressed satisfaction with his team’s progress after the
completion of the first round of fixtures in the first
division of the eircom national league.<br><br>And he has
pledged to keep faith with the side’s attacking style of
play as the campaign gathers momentum over the coming
weeks.<br><br>Rovers continue their pursuit of valuable points with a
tough away fixture against Kilkenny City at Buckley
Park on Saturday night. And O’Riordan has promised
that his young side will got to the South East
determined to collect all three points.<br><br>“Our side is
packed with creative, attacking players so it would be
foolish to try to turn them into a defensive unit”, the
manager points out.<br><br>“I’ve never believed in the
notion of trying to play for a draw. My philosophy is
that teams should endeavour to win every game they
they play. Thankfully, we have players are the club
who can bring that philosophy on to the pitch. We are
an attacking, entertaining team and I have no
intention of changing the way we play.<br><br>“We go out
with the same positive approach away from home as we
do at the Showgrounds and we will continue to do
that. We’ve got players who can get forward and score
goals and it is important that we play to our
strengths”, he adds.<br><br>Reflecting on the campaign to
date, O’Riordan concedes that the squad needs to be
strengthened but accepts that his activity in the transfer
market will be determined by the funds that become
available.<br><br>“We could do with getting a few new players in if
only to give us strength in depth but, having said
that, the young lads have been brilliant since the
start of the season and they certainly haven’t let us
down”, he stresses.<br><br>O’Riordan took over the
managerial hot seat at the Showgrounds just two weeks before
the start of the season. There was just one player on
the club’s books at the time and morale was at an
all-time low. But the former Galway manager has
revitalised the club and more and more fans are being
attracted back to the Showgrounds.<br><br>“We didn’t start
off from an ideal base but the enthusiasm from
everybody at the club has been fantastic and we are heading
in the right direction”, says O’Riordan.<br><br>“I
couldn’t have asked for more from the players and it’s
encouraging that we’ve given as good as we have got in a very
competitive league.<br><br>“Things are beginning to settle
down now after one round of fixtures and I expect the
cream will come to the top of the division over the
next few weeks.<br><br>“So far, I’ve been impressed by
Finn Harps, Dublin City, Drogheda and Athlone Town and
these are the teams we’ve got to finish
above.<br><br>“The league campaign is a marathon rather than a
sprint and there’s still a long way to go. It’s too
early to drawn any definite conclusions but I’m
satisfied with the progress we’re making. We’ve got a young
team but they don’t fear anybody and we’re looking
forward to the rest of the campaign”, he
adds.<br><br>Rovers and Kilkenny share the spoils in a 1-1 draw at
the Showgrounds in the first game of the League and
O’Riordan is anticipating another close encounter on
Saturday.<br><br>“I believe Kilkenny have improved a lot since the
start of the season so they will probably start as
favourites on Saturday. However, we’ve got a good fitness
level and the excellent pitch at Buckley Park will suit
our style of play. It’s going to be another tough
assignment for our young lads but we’ll go there with plenty
of confidence”, the manager says.
Greetings from America, where soccer gets little
respect. So, I watch soccer whenever it is on television.
Why the Rovers? Aside from being one of the best
teams around, my roots can be traced to Sligo town. I
would love to see the Chicago Fire (our local team)
take on the bit o red. Hopefully, I will get some
Rovers fans to join the Supporters Club (Hi Jim). That's
all.<br>Slan,<br>Sean
Well boys, have you been up to no good then, hey?
hey? Empty your pockets lads and I will see if you
have got anything for me now!!<br><br>Well Mary
mcGowan! It seems that you have been lining your fat
pockets with the cash from SLigo Rovers for the past ten
years ya thieven hussy!!!<br><br>=== Rovers are being
ripped off by those in the committee, money is always
going missing and The expenses that it costs to keep
all the board going for one season is higher than the
gross domestic product of Chile!!!!<br><br>Get the
thieves out!!!
SLIGO Rovers hope to have floodlighting at the
Showgrounds fully operational within the next three weeks,
the Chairman of the Rovers Development Committee, Mr.
Ray Gallagher has said.<br><br>Rovers are also
expecting delivery of 1,800 top quality new seats from
Spain for the western stand, which will be completed
with press and corporate hospitality facilities in the
near future. The seats are similar to those in
Longford’s Flancare Park.<br><br>Plans are already in place
to hold an open day at the end of September to give
fans the chance to view the new facility, which also
includes state-of-the-art dressing rooms, built to
U.E.F.A. specifications.<br><br>It is also intended to
remove the existing entrance and perimeter wall and to
replace it with a new entrance, recessed at least fifteen
metres and with six new turnstiles.<br><br>Drainage work
is now taking place prior to the construction of a
car park, with access from the lower Church Hill
gates.<br><br>“We want to have facilities on a par, if not better,
than most in the country. We hope to see the
floodlights operational within three weeks and work on the
installation of the seats in the western stand will commence
as soon as they are delivered,” Mr. Gallagher told a
special information meeting for club members on Monday
night last.<br><br>The Development Committee Chairman
confirmed that Rovers have also applied for planning
permission for the construction of an all-weather pitch at
the Showgrounds and Mr. Gallagher stated that a
clubhouse at the Showgrounds was also
“essential”.<br><br>“The club certainly needs a focal point and a
clubhouse would not alone generate funds, but would be a
very welcome addition and could house social functions
and other events,” he added.<br><br>Mr. Gallagher,
who recently travelled to Holland to view facilities
at similar sized grounds to the Showgrounds,
explained that the new western stand would have the best
wheelchair and disabled facilities available.<br><br>He said
the central section of the stand would be reserved
for shareholders.<br><br>Discussions were also
on-going with Sligo Corporation with a view to
establishing an integrated development plan for sport and
amenity facilities in the general area of the
Showgrounds, Mr. Gallagher added.
Sligo Rovers manager, Don O’Riordan, has targeted
three new players as he attempts to strengthen his
squad in advance of Sunday’s showdown with Cobh
Ramblers at the Showgrounds.<br><br>The manager declined
to name the players but said he was hopeful of
concluding negotiations with at least two of them before the
week-end.<br><br>Rovers have battled their way to the top of the Eircom
league first division with the youngest squad in the
country and O’Riordan is anxious to bring in some
experienced players to help the young lads along.<br><br>The
manager was delighted with the side’s performance against
Limerick last week, despite the fact that they had to
settle for a share of the spoils.<br><br>“I felt we
deserved to win the game but, unfortunately, we came up
against an inspired goalkeeper for the second home game
in a row”, he said.<br><br>“Given the number of
chances we created, it was disappointing not to win but I
couldn’t fault the lads for the way they
played.<br><br>“They were very positive throughout, played a lot of
good attacking football and it was a good all round
team performance. Once again, the young lads worked
very hard but there was a lot of quality in their play
as well.<br><br>“If we keep playing as well as that,
the goals will come because we’re not going to come
up against an inspired keeper every week”, O’Riordan
added.<br><br>He said he was particularly pleased with the
character the team showed in bouncing back from a first
half penalty miss.<br><br>“The penalty miss could have
drained the team’s confidence but, in fairness to the
lads, they responded very well and continued to control
the game.<br><br>“This was epitomised by Sean
Flannery. He was desperately disappointed not to score from
the penalty but he didn’t let it effect his game. He
kept battling away and led the attack superbly. He had
a cracking effort near the end which bore all the
hallmarks of a top class player. If a player in the
Premiership produced something like that, they would never
stop showing it on television”, O’Riordan
maintained.<br><br>Rovers have emerged as the surprise team of the early
part of the season but O’Riordan is not getting
carried away.<br><br>“We’re delighted with the start
we’ve made but we realise there’s a long way to go and
a lot of hard work to get through.<br><br>“The lads
deserve great credit for the way they have applied
themselves since the start of the season. What has impressed
me most is the togetherness in the squad. They are
all working for each other and the atmosphere in the
dressing room is fantastic. Once you have that at a club,
there is always something to build on”, he
said.<br><br>Rovers hope to have Johnny Morris Burke and Owen
O’Donoghue back for Sunday’s clash with Cobh but teenage
midfielder, John Gaffney, is a doubtful starter after
sustaining a hip injury against Limerick last week
