0
NOT for the first time this season Gary Dempsey
proved Waterford’s match winner in the Regional Sports
Centre last night.
The diminutive 20-year-old
midfielder from Wexford, who signed a three-year contract
with Waterford last week, opened his account with a
beautifully taken goal on the stroke of
half-time.

Dempsey passed to Wayne Fitzgerald and ran on to hammer
the return low past John Healy from just outside the
area. The goal proved the highlight of a first half
littered with yellow cards, three to Sligo and two to
Waterford.

Early on, Rafael Cretaro sent a 20-yard pile driver
inches over the Waterford bar, while Barry Wood shot
over from a good position at the other
end.

Dempsey put the game beyond the reach of the visitors
after 62 minutes. He took a pass from Eric Bradley and
unleashed a dipping volley from 25 yards that left Healy
helpless.

WATERFORD UNITED: Binder, Breen, Frost, Dempsey, Leahy,
