Somebody asked recently, following Rovers great
5-0 win in Limerick, when was the last time Sligo won
so convincingly away from home - and it brought to
mind a story I had almost forgotten.
Again, it
involved Sligo Rovers and Limerick and yet again the
scoreline was a handsome 5-0 in favour of
Rovers.
Limerick then played their games at the ‘Markets Field’
and were managed by FA Cup medal winner Ewan
Fenton.
The former Blackpool man played in defence alongside
one of the greatest players ever to come out of
Limerick, Al Finnucane.
The game was played on Holy
Thursday and I will never forget the marvellous display of
our own Jimmy Burnside.
In a fabulous one-man
show, he netted all five goals, and tore the much
vaunted Limerick defence apart.
Needless to say he was
the talk of the place and coming back on the bus we
were imagining the headlines for the following day.
Then the awful realisation that, the next day being
Good Friday, there would be no newspapers.
I will
never forget Jimmy’s face.

And that was the
case. We had to wait for the local newspapers the
following week to read of his brilliant
performance!

Can’t get away from Sligo Rovers who are quickly
becoming something of an enigma.
On Tuesday, they
produced a fine first-half against Athlone only to slip
into mediocrity for most of the second-half. A
marvellous header, from the much maligned Seán Flannery
(from a great Hutchison pull-back) was enough to send
the crowd home happy.

That is, of course, if
you are willing to overlook a pathetic refereeing
performance from Tommy McAree, who insisted on ignoring the
advantage rule.
Saturday night, it was Cobh, and a
trouncing at the hands of Ramblers who are in the nether
regions of the First Division.
I would say they have
Don O’Riordan scratching his head and wondering
what’s coming next. They are certainly keeping the rest
of us guessing!
It’s a typically dogged first division match. Despite Sligo Rovers valiant attempt to embellish the contest with some degree of sophistication, it looks as...
