For both Yahoo Running Groups~

Saw this weekend event come across my radar on an Active.com emailer….

http://www.pinelandfarms.com/

…sounds like fun…I’ve not done a lot of trail running, in fact very little, but love the idea of it…there are a variety of events to choose from, for all skill-levels…I’m trying to build my race schedule for the New Year and think I’ll mix in one of the races this weekend.  Just going, taking in the whole experience, and enjoying the BBQ and beer strikes my fancy….

Any more talk about the Reach the Beach Relay?

Good luck to all on the various Turkey-Trots and full out runs….hehe….

~Tika

Hi Becky!
Well, I don't know how much of a "race" it's going to be but I'm going anyway.
I go to the doc next Monday to go over the blood work and possibly redo that now
that I've cut my daily quarter pound of cheese out, cold turkey. I'm suddenly
dropping weight like crazy and feel too wimpy to run much. I need my
cheeses!!!!

Later today I'll do an update on my year so far.  Not much quality   but some
very interesting races!  Huggs Becky who is NOT going to do a thanksgiving day
race this year.

Yogi Berra is one of the most beloved of sports figures of all time. Not only
was he one of the best catchers in the history of baseball, but he has had so
many well-intentioned but misunderstand quotes in his lifetime that he
eventually claimed "I never even said half the things I said." These quotes
have come to be known as Berraisms.

Can you imagine if Yogi was a runner instead of a baseball player? If this was
the case, I'm confident that he would have as many quirky quotes about running
as he did in baseball. There is at least a 90% chance he would have said more
than half of these quotes below.
__________________________________________
"Hey Yogi, did you run Peachtree this year?"
Yogi: "Are you kidding? Nobody runs Peachtree any more. It's too crowded."
__________________________________________

"Hey Yogi, you look cool in that new running outfit"
Yogi: "Thanks, you don't look too hot yourself"
__________________________________________

"When you have a choice between running the 5K or the 10K, run it."
_________________________________________

Yogi: Yesterday, I did a 90 minute run"
"How did it go?"
"Yogi: "Slow, it took me an hour and a half."
__________________________________________

"You have to give 100% the first half of a marathon. If that's not enough, then
in the second half, give whatever is left."
__________________________________________

Running is 90% mental. The other half is physical.
__________________________________________
"Hey Yogi, Haile Gebrselassie just ran a 2:03:59 for a new marathon world
record."

Yogi: "Really. I thought the old record would last until it was broken!"

My son in law and I are racing on TG Day. Alpha dog bragging rights. Does get
harder to hold him off each year though. Time is just not on my side.

I hope for about 19:45 on this particular course. Should keep me a good 30
seconds ahead of him.

GRUMPY:

Cool that you found Watervliet NY and MI. A side note:

I was Superintendent of Schools in Watervliet MI from 1985-1993. It is a small
rural fruit farming community. Two versions of the townname that I heard are:

1. Watervliet means where the rivers flow.
2. Indian chief name - probably Potawatomi

GRUMPY you are the man!

Keep on running.

COACH & DAUGHTER:

Hey, good luck. If you would post your upcoming races in the Database, Future
Races, everyone (who cares) would know that you two are racing. There are only
two races listed there right now. 19:30 on trails is pretty fast.

NEVADA NIKKI is racing and I am racing the Southwestern Michigan College (where
I spend my first two years of college and my hometown in 1966-68) running trails
(which I helped cut and groom as a 19 year old sophomore). It is the annual
Turkey Trot 8K. It is fun and very challenging as 19 years olds like to cut
trails that are demanding.

My race is on Monday Nov. 23. Good luck to all ROADS SCHOLARS racers.

Praying for a wonderful and thankful Thanksgiving for all my RS friends and
family.

Keep on running.

COACH:

That is my kind of attitude. Not sure but I might visit my MD Son in
Providence, RI this coming year. He is the one that did the USA Marathon Trials
in 2000 and Hawaii Ironman a few years ago. Probably run a race with him.
Might even swing up to Caribou from there (about 8 hours). Get in shape and
send me a list of races that you are thinking of doing. The smaller the better.
Seems like everytime ROAD SCHOLARS try an encounter at a big race, things go
badly.

I am still hurting from the sciatica but I am training (kinda) and will run the
8k Trail race back in my hometown next Monday.

More later - keep on runing.

Hi Nikki!

Ha- I knew your treadmill was in the garage but I didn't know why. I actually think that is a good place for it, though! Mine is in my basement as it is the coolest spot in the house. (Didn't think about the garage! Not enough room there though, unless I permanently remove my car!) Since my house is on a hill the basement has a walk out door- the only door to the house with no steps, and it's larger than most doors- phew!

We had a tough time with the assembly. Was about to throw in the towel but the support person on the phone helped. It was finally done late Saturday so I haven't used it other than a brief walk to test that it worked! I ran outside yesterday and am taking today off...but tomorrow I will run on it.  :)

3:27 at age 52 for a woman is amazing!

Hi Vicki of the Burnin' Bush variety!

Yes, it was a shock that Boston closed so early. It's become a subject of speculation on the running boards everywhere. Our own small town girl, Devere Karlson, qualified again this year and I see she's made the list for 2010. At 52, she just ran the ING New York City Marathon in 3:27, finishing 17th of the 1276 in the division. Yowza!

Congratulations on the new treadmill! Having one in the garage has sure made my life easier. I've worked it out so that I can get in a good fast 5K a couple times a week and then take Hank out for an additional couple miles in our usual stop-n-go manner.

Good luck with the assembly! Mine was second hand so it was ready to go. Wouldn't fit in the door in one piece so the garage is where it stays. LOL!

I just bought a new treadmill... it is huge!! It arrived yesterday but needs assembly- UGG! We are having a soaking nor'easter today, had hoped it use it but guess not. Getting it in the house and out of the box..just that was a huge project.. Now I am waiting for John to help with the assembly. Anyway, once I get it going it will help me with winter training when the roads here in New Hampshire and covered with snow and ice and cars....(it's really the car part that is the problem!)

I am glad I signed up when I did. I know a lot of people who planned on going
did not sign up in time and are very dissapointed. Told them think about 2011!

The last post was Nov 7. I guess the racing season is over except for T.G.

Things are starting to go better for me. The knee, shoulder, neck and heel are treating me nicely for now, so I have decided that 2010 will be a banner year for this 50+ year old. I think I can have only one or two really good years per decade now that I am so old. I am still waiting for my race with/against DOC.

I have also started a new job 2 months ago. I teach math at the Caribou Adult Ed. center. Maine is undergoing an Educational consolidation so we are actually, for the time being, called Eastern Aroostook RSU 39.

I also learned, via Face Book, that a former athlete of mine will be doing her first Ironman Triathlon in Florida this year. I love to see my former runners continue in the sport that I love.
