Sorry to hear the hammie is acting up once again, Vicki.  One of these days I'd like to beat your mileage fair and square!  ;)

Hopefully you took preventive measures soon enough this time that recovery will be faster.  Good luck and keep us posted!

If I was a smart runner, I would pick a race, train for it, and do my
best on race day.
But I want to run a marathon on Feb. 19 and try again to qualify for
Boston. And I wanted to run the first race in the local Grand Prix
Series this past weekend, the 5K at the Runners Den Classic Road
Races.
So on Saturday I met at South Mountain with a bunch of friends from
the East Valley Runners. Many of them are planning to do the Lost
Dutchman Marathon the same day I am planning to run the Desert
Classic Marathon.
Most people did Double Dobbins: run 5 miles up the mountain to
Dobbins Overlook, come back down, go back up again. It makes for a
very tough 20-miler.
Since I wanted to run the 5K on Sunday, I only did once up and down,
a tough ten-miler.
So I didn't get the best workout I could for my marathon, and I
effectively ruined my chances of doing my best in the races on Sunday.
To at least get my weekend mileage up, I did the 10K also.
My times weren't that bad considering.
But I really have to start doing my best, instead of just my best in
the less than ideal circumstances I put myself in.
I ran a 21:01 5K, and a 44:20 10K. Flat, fast, paved courses, nice
weather.

Willie,

Its a hybrid of Jeff Galloway and Jeff Foxworthy. :-)

Actually, I am running more than every other day again. Finally!

I only got 4 in this past week because of a scheduling change;
normally I do get 5. I am trying to focus on EVERYTHING but time,
right now (form/carriage, turnover, strength).

I am a little gun shy to add speed work (too many tweaks this past
year); I do one mid-week middle distance tempo run and one long run
per week along with two or three 5-6 milers. Although I may cut the
long run back to every 10 days when I get around 20. I will have ten
runs at 16+, and three or four 20+ milers before April.

Max mileage so far has been 37-38, the past 2 weeks. For the previous
5-6 weeks, I hovered around 30-35 (with one small exception). I have
been pretty conserviative in adding mileage, usually only 2-3 miles
per week; one on the medium run and one on the long run per week.

I will MAX out in about 5-6 weeks at 50 miles(a new HIGH for me, never
been over 50 before). I hope to hold it there for a couple weeks
before I start tapering. I am planning on a full 3 week taper, it
worked well for me last time. We will see, I feel a lot stonger this
time around, so it may be closer to 2-2.5 weeks.

Boston Goal right now, barring injury: 1) Have fun, 2) beat 200
minutes pie in the sky goal, 3) 210 worse case to earn a trip back.

Thanks for asking Willie..........Always good to hear from you.

Marty

Leslie: GO GET 'EM GIRL!!
The weather was great last year...it's the hour-long wait to which I
was referring when you (& Kurt) might get a little hypothermic if
you don't have something warm to put on.
At least YOU can cuddle with Dave.
You can always thaw out if necessary at the Y (up the street)

I haven't posted much about my Boston training here. Many of you have
seen a version of this on the other sites; you can skip it, nothing
new here if youv'e read it before.

Mon: Strength train AM, Yoga Noon, stretch PM. Legs were still tight,
even after yoga.

Tues: Strength train AM, 9 mile tempo PM, 7:40 pace, wind aided. I had
my wife take me out and drop me 9 miles from home. What I call the
"stranded" run in. The wind was horrific (snow blown 30 miles per
hour) and I just didn't want to fight it for a 4.5 mile out before
turning around. I still had to fight it sideways for about half the
run, but the times it was at my back I was flying. I did not have a
watch, but I checked the car clock when she dropped me off and then
when I got back. 69 minutes.

Wed: Yoga Noon, 6+ mile recovery run PM. 52 minutes.(shorts, for the
third time this month!)

Thurs: Knowing that my schedule might change this week because of
weather, I took the day off. From everything. A rarity for me.

Fri: 17 miles, Noon. Took a half day from work to get this one in. 50
F and sunny breezy. It was beautiful. First 10.5 was pretty fast too,
for an LSD, around 7:52/mile, then slowed to 8:30's.

Sat: Double session strength training, PM. really busted it today,
after having three days off strength training. Really crappy weather;
mid to high 30's and steady rain, all day.

Sun: 6 miler. Waited for the (ick) weather to clear. Tight shin for 2
miles, loosened up. Easy pace, no watch. Weather suprised me; 50 and
light rain.

Weekly miles: 38, second week in a row over 37, a new high for me.
This week marks the half way point of a 20 week schedule, I am pretty
happy where I am at so far.

Kurt, et al...
I got the book on Darcy Wakefield for Christmas this year and read it in
no time. What a read! She hailed from my old stomping grounds in Western
Maine and I went to school with some Wakefields as well. Hit close to
home. I second the encouragement to read it...'I Remember Running...'

Its fun to see look this stuff over. . .

I remember the old days when Runners World would publish ALL the
names of people who finished under 3 hours.

Hey, I know Bill from the Penguin list. We've never met, but are anxious to catch up with each other. Bill and I run simialr paces and hope to pace each other for the race.... this is going to be fun.. (We've been emailing each other for ages, too!!)

Weather has been PERFECT for the races within the past few weeks.  Yesterday was about 49-50 at race start time for the half, saturday temp was about 55... PERFECT clear skies, etc.  Let's hope this is the weather for the race day. It is perfect "leslie" weather.... where 90% of my PR's have been met...

I been doing a lot of 2x a day for the past 3 months to prep for the
2 races but it will still be a challenge to run 2 races about a hr
apart.  This is my last hard week with Saturday and Sunday both
being long days and then I start the taper down.  No more races are
scheduled at this point in prep for the sub 3 hr at Gasparilla.

I hope the weather stays reasonably mild for the races.

(Nice Warm Day!!!) and took the 15 minute bus ride into NYC. Headed
up to Central Park and did the pre-race routine. Potty, Stretch,
Warm Up..etc. The weather was so perfect!! 47 at the start. I had
shorts and a light weight long sleeve shirt. Perfect. Met up with
a few friends and wished each other luck and then we are off! The
half marathon was just a little over 2 loops of the whole park.
Running in Central Park can get very repetitive after a while...it's
always the same. Every NYRR race is the same almost :) That's why
I love having a car and racing in New Jersey! This race felt a
little different though. Not sure why? The race did run out of
gatorade by the time I hit the 8th mile. Glad I had my Chocolate
powergel. It was very tasty at the 8th mile. Yummy!! I love
chocolate powergel during a run! :) My pace was very consistant.
Held a 10:45 pace pretty much throughout the whole thing. I little
faster here...a little slower here. But overall very consistant. I
think my milage boost this week helped with the speed!
