Hey Mike. I'll have to check but I think I might be able to get us
into a bus trip to the Dover race if your interested. I never been
to a race either and would love to go. Hey even if we don't go on
the bus we can drive down and go to one sometime soon.

Hi everyone,

I'm starting data collection for a research project about the
Internet and
sports information.

If you have ever used the Internet to look up any information
pertaining to
sports, I would appreciate if you would fill out my survey. It
should take
between 11- 15 minutes to complete and you could win a prize!!

http://apps.ws.utk.edu/sportsweb/

As part of the convenience sampling procedures we've including
a "snowball"
option - we're asking you to please send the survey on to your
friends and
family who also go online for sports information. There's a form
at the
end of the survey on which you'll enter your friends' email
addresses and
they'll be whisked the URL.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hard to say - seems to work as far as breaking up the tracks. If did seem to
create a problem of pit stops, however.. The latter was very scary.

For safety sake, let's think this out better before using it again.

NASCAR's rise: Hold the applause

NASCAR has won the motor racing war.

Forget green, yellow or checkered flags. Open-wheel racing in this
country is flying a white flag of surrender.

Today, NASCAR's Daytona 500 will be the most-watched motorsports
event on the racing calendar, for the eighth consecutive year, with
an audience around 30 million.

Hard concept to grasp, for a Yankee born before 1980, when the
Indianapolis 500 was still king and NASCAR was a Dixie curiosity. But
the open-wheel circuit fractured, went downhill, and now many of its
biggest names are swapping paint with NASCAR's good ol' boys.

A Mears, an Andretti and a Fittipaldi will be racing today. At
Daytona. A Foyt attempted to qualify but didn't make the grid.

That those guys scrambled to get a NASCAR ride, in vehicles the open-
wheel community once derided as "tin tops' and "taxi cabs,' tells you
all you need to know about who is top dog in U.S. racing.

NASCAR is fat, sassy and boastful. It will inform you 17 of the
nation's 20 biggest sports events each year (in terms of single-day
attendance) are NASCAR races. It notes that NASCAR events get higher
television ratings than regular-season baseball and basketball.

There is that $2.8 billion TV contract, trailing the NFL but no one
else.

NASCAR is huge. We admit it. It cannot be ignored. It has steamrolled
its way to the upper echelon of American sports.

Still doesn't mean it is uniformly admirable. Not that many big
sports are.

There are upsides to the sport. It is highly competitive and
tactically compelling. It is colorful. Its technology appeals to
gadget-crazed Americans. Many fans are impressed by the courage of
its drivers, most of whom seem like regular guys. Guys who manage to
avoid police blotters, too.

But it has significant drawbacks we can't ignore even while its
Nielsens continue to rise.

NASCAR remains the most crassly commercial of sports entities. Every
square inch of every car and every firesuit is for sale, making them
moving billboards. Corporate America is in your face all day long.

Baseball fans squawk when teams peddle naming rights to their
stadium. NASCAR would sell the space on drivers' eyelids if someone
wrote a check.

See how often today, while watching the race, you don't have
somebody's logo in your field of vision. May not happen once, not
over 500 miles. Beer, detergent, candy, fast food, sexual-performance
enhancers ... NASCAR is one relentless shill.

Advertisers love NASCAR because it is thought to be quintessentially
American. No foreigners with funny accents here.

But it also is fairly seriously exclusionary, as well. No women in
today's field, no Latins (Fittipaldi aside) and no African Americans.

NASCAR still has that Confederate battle flag thing going among fans
in the infield, and for some reason that seems to have a chilling
effect on minorities. Imagine. Even with all its growth, the sport's
hardcore audience remains white and male.

NASCAR's competitive edge comes with a couple of asterisks. Much of
it is legislated through ever-changing rules that seek to put all
teams on equal footing. Some is due to the infamous "NASCAR yellow'
mysterious caution flags that bring leaders back to the pack just
when a race is getting dull. Nobody wins by two laps in this sport.

Another issue that leaves some squeamish are the stories, that just
don't go away, that NASCAR scripts the occasional outcome. Races and,
more often, who wins the pole.

Let's just say there have been a lot of coincidences, over the years,
from Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the first race at Daytona after his
father's death there ... to guys winning the races closest to their
homes ... to backmarkers winning the pole just when a major sponsor
is getting antsy.

That kind of manipulation, never proved but a constant topic of
speculation among journalists closest to the sport, would put NASCAR
only a step ahead of professional wrestling.

There's more not to like. NASCAR remains allied to R.J. Reynolds,
which gives its name to the Winston Cup. Now, we all decided a while
back that smoking is a national health crisis, but NASCAR still
cozies up to the tobacco guys to the tune of $40 million-plus
annually.

Then again, if you want to talk about industries with disastrous
impacts on the modern world, carmakers and the internal-combustion
engine rank high on the list. Think of the environmental damage
wreaked by gasoline-burning vehicles over the past century, consider
the history-changing pursuit of oil ... and here we are celebrating
the greasy mess. Keen. Carbon monoxide, we salute you!

Last, and anything but least, NASCAR and motor racing people continue
to accept death as a part of doing business. It happened at Daytona
just two years ago.

Every fatality is labeled a "freak accident' but we rarely get
through a year without one of those freaks. Imagine baseball and
basketball shrugging if a couple of its guys died violently during
competition every year. Yeah, ludicrous.

NASCAR is big and getting bigger. It has run the competition off the
track. Great news for its regular fans as well as cigarette-makers,
oil men, automakers, unregenerate Confederates and folks who get a
buzz from highspeed wrecks on their big-screen TVs. Excuse us if we
don't stand up and cheer.

Gordon confident despite poor showing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jeff Gordon typically has a good qualifying
car at Daytona International Speedway -- but he always has a good
race car.

That's a comforting thought to the two-time Daytona 500 winner,
because he qualified only 29th best Monday afternoon for next
Sunday's "Great American Race."

Gordon says a bevy of NASCAR rules designed to make its Winston Cup
cars ride higher in the air plagues his team. He turned a lap in
49.121 seconds, an average speed of 183.221 mph in his No. 24 DuPont
Chevrolet.

Gordon is scheduled to start 15th Thursday in the first Gatorade 125-
Mile Qualifying Race. Each race determines half of the top 30
starters for the 500.

I'm a little disappointed with that, but we've got the 125s, we've
got a great race car and I know we're going to draft and race well,"
Gordon said. "Having to pass a lot of cars was not the way I wanted
to do it (qualify for the 500), but oh, well."

Gordon's lap trailed Bud Pole Award winner Jeff Green's AOL
Chevrolet's lap by .891 seconds after Green won his second career
pole -- in the season's biggest race -- with a lap of 48.230 /
186.606.

The four-time Winston Cup champion Gordon said he did not think the
Hendrick engine department's work was in question Monday. Rather, he
said the difference for him and his other Hendrick teammates, the
best of whom qualified only 13th, was explained by the rules.

"I feel like we're making good power," Gordon said. "I know about the
gains that we've made in the engine department and we're good there
(but) I don't know what it is. If we knew we'd be a lot faster.

Typically here it's all about getting that spoiler out of the air and
it's different now because NASCAR has limited us greatly on what we
can and cannot do. It's just the rules that they have limiting the
springs, the shocks, limiting the weight transfer, the panhard bar
angle in the back.

"There's a lot of things that we were doing last year that NASCAR
just keeps catching up to the teams with and keeps us from getting
the back of the cars down. It does make the horsepower that much more
important, but like I said, I don't know what other guys are making
for horsepower because I feel like we're making good power."

Gordon went out 17th and there was no doubt what neighborhood he was
going to be in when qualifying ended.

"I guess I'm glad we've got the 125s coming up to race our way in
because we ran so good the other night in the Bud Shootout," Gordon
said, laughing. "I know we've got a good race car, but I don't know
(about qualifying).

"We came down here and tested and felt like we had a good piece (but)
we came back down and we just haven't had the speed. Each time out
we've gained on it, but just not enough.

"When I saw some of those guys run those fast laps I hoped it was the
track that had picked up, but it wasn't for us, anyway."

Gordon said he had no doubt the setup from his Shootout car, which
finished second Saturday night in the 70-lap special event behind
Dale Earnhardt Jr., would swap over to his primary car.

"These cars were fairly close in time when we tested -- in fact the
500 car was even a little better and it drove better," Gordon said of
the two chassis. "Our car is just not that great by itself, but it's
very good in drafting conditions and I like to draft -- we seem to
be able to find our way up through there."

HI Race Fans,
We have made some changes in our site again. We have added a new poll
and another background and song. The background and the song we have
used before and this will be the last time for them for a long time.
The song and background were made 1 week after we lost Dale
Earnhardt and was used on the page for the 2002 Daytona 500. To us
they stand for the realionship between Dale Earnhardt and the Daytona
Speedway.

We want all our fans to know that there have been a lot of Dale
Earnhardt sites fade away over the last 24 months and it's a very sad
thing to see. We want to make a promise to you that no matter what,
THIS site will always be here, Our tribute to Dale Earnhardt will
live on for all the world to see. We want everyone to remeber Dale
and what he did for his fans and the world of racing. We also want to
thank you for being fans Of Dale Earnhardt and of our site.
We will be posting a new background and song on Friday for the start
of speedweek and to welcome you all to the 2003 racing season.
Please be sure to stop by and have a look vote on the poll and
