Washington Mystics Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball
Operations Judy Holland-Burton announced today that the Mystics will
renew Marianne Stanley's contract as Head Coach of the Mystics. In a
special ceremony, Stanley will officially sign the contract to her
new agreement in front of Mystics fans following the Washington
Wizards game on Tuesday, February 4th. Per team policy, length and
terms of the contract will not be disclosed.
"We are very excited to have Marianne back on board," said Holland-
Burton. "We look forward to the 2003 season and improving on the
success we had as a team last year."
"I'm extremely happy to be staying here in Washington," said
Stanley. "The Mystics fans provide such a fantastic atmosphere to
play in. I'm also really thrilled to continue my relationship with
this team. I look forward to working with our players again and
building on the tremendous season we had last year."
Stanley was named Head Coach of the Mystics on April 4th, 2002. In
her first season as head coach, she won WNBA Coach of the Year honors
and led the Mystics to its best ever regular season record (17-15).
Under Stanley's guidance, the Mystics also made a tremendous run in
the 2002 WNBA Playoffs, sweeping the Charlotte Sting in the First
Round and making its first appearance in the Eastern Conference
Finals (Mystics lost to the New York Liberty in the best of three
series, 1-2).
Prior to being named Head Coach, Stanley served as an Assistant Coach
for the Mystics during the 2001 season. She is a 2002 Women's
National Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and has previously served
as a head coach for some of the top women's collegiate programs in
the country.
