appreciated<br>here at the AVP. We are looking forward to the 2002
schedule and will be<br>posting it as soon as it is

Staff<br>---***---<br>History of Champions - The AVP is looking to build an
extensive archive of past champions. We are going through
all old record archives, but could use your help. Our
goal is to build complete biographies including images
of those<br>who helped create the sport. Who are
your favorite past champions and why? We would love to
get a few stories with photos of the great
Smith/Stoklos and Hovland/Dodd rivalry.<br>If you have any
digital images of past champions please email us today.
Also we are looking for any old photos of Sinjin and
Karch playing together.Grassroots - The AVP is looking
for contributors and editors<br>to help us reach out
to the volleyball community. The AVP has reserved
space at avp.com to highlight volleyball in your local
community. If you would like us to put your article or
photos up on our website, please send all information to
contact@.... We are looking for all<br>types of volleyball
activity so indoor information is terrific as
well.<br>Amateur Tournaments - The AVP will be devoting a special
section of our website for amateur tournaments, so please
get your 2002 tournament infomation ready to send us.
The section will list all tournaments that the AVP is
aware of<br>for 2002. Stay tuned for more
information.<br>Indoor Sand Facilities - Here in Southern California we
are very fortunate to have great weather and beaches.
However,we often become spoiled. For instance, if the
weather drops<br>into the sixties with the slightest of
winds, it is a good bet that nobody will be playing
ball. Being from the midwest,I remember praying for 50
degree weather in the spring so we could get outside and
play some ball. It always seemed to<br>take about two
weeks to get your sand legs. In addition to playing
volleyball in less than desirable conditions, we often
played at indoor sand volleyball facilities just
to<br>keep the touch of the ball. These facilities are very
common in the Midwest and East Coast. Volleyball players
are truly diehard fans and participants. The AVP
salutes those players<br>that make the phone calls, drive
an hour in bad weather (rain and snow), and pay
court fees just to play at an indoor sand volleyball
facility. This is dedication. The AVP is looking<br>for
best and the worst indoor sand volleyball facilities
and stories about the players who play in them.Send
us an email today with your story and images. We
have heard of people playing in heated barns in the
winter, is this true?<br>We need email messages from all
Volleyball Players. Support the AVP today and tell all your
friends to visit AVP.com. In addition, don't forget to
remind your friends to signup for<br>the newsletter. It
is as simple as entering your email. The more people
we know the more successful we can be <br>IAN CLARK

Karch, could you play in an AVP,FIVB or an
exhibition match with my nephew "Ian Clark" as your partner
just once before you retire? Please. Of course we all
hope that retirement is still a long ways off for you
and that you will always remember how much Volleyball
fans everywhere appreciate all that you've done for
the sport over the years. Sincerely, Unca Nick
I have a few questions for Karch:<br><br>1. Have
you seen Kent Steffes since the law suit and if so
have words been exchanged?<br><br>2. Would you rather
partner with Brent Doble or Ack next season?<br><br>3.
Would you ever consider playing with George Romain as
Sinjin did last summer (assuming George plays the other
side)?<br><br>4. Do you still practice with Lee LeGrande in the
off-season? And how do you rate his game?<br><br>5. Do you
think the game has improved at all with all of the
rules changes and scoring changes and would you rather
go back to the full court, old ball and tighter hand
setting?<br><br>6. Do you think Brian Lewis will return to the
AVP?<br><br>7. Do you think the AVP is transitioning itself out
of the bankruptcy as you had hoped and do you think
purses will increase back to the $50,000 - $100,000
instead of the $10,000 - $20,000 range?<br><br>8. Are you
encouraging your son's to play any sports at a young age such
as....volleyball?
you can ask him anything and he'll answer! I
e-mailed Karch last night and asked him if it would be
alright for us to collect questions for him. I told Karch
that I'd forward them to him and he can get back to us
whenever he would like. Then, this morning, I received an
e-mailed reply from Karch saying that he would be happy to
respond to your questions.<br><br>So, get writing and
e-mail them to me or post 'em in the club!<br><br>See
ya,<br>JC
Karch's 2001 season wasn't as he would have
wanted it to be. So, I would expect him to start
training early (like he usually does) and get himself and
his partner back into the winner's circle. I think
it's pretty safe to say that Karch will be the sport's
$3 million dollar man in 2002!
I think you may be onto something. Doble and
Karch were going to play together as I remember, but
then KK took longer to recover than expected and
LL/Doble won their 2 tournaments, so the pairing was off
the table for the season. Also, his demeanor seems to
go with Karch (remember, Steve Timmons called Karch
"the computer" years ago). I would love to see them
together - Doble was solid as a rock in Virginia Beach
this summer - LL got 90% of the serves.
You can post your questions to him in our message
board and I'll forward them to him. I am sure he will
respond in a timely manner. If you don't feel comfortable
with everyone seeing your questions, you can e-mail it
directly to me and I'll pass it onto Karch.
I think Karch would definitely be back for 2002
because I feel he will want to be back in top form and in
the winner's circle. If Karch is coming back for the
2002 season, I most likely think he'd play with Ack
since they have had much success in the past. If not, I
would ABSOLUTELY love to see Karch play with a
DIFFERENT partner every weekend...just to see how many wins
he would rack up! Karch would just bring out the
best in everyone and I think a lot of the players
would just be so thrilled just to play with him.
(perhaps Karch would give Doble a shot if he can get Doble
away from Lee LeGrande).<br><br>As for AJ, I am not
sure because of his problem with his foot. I don't
know if he opted to have surgery or not. <br><br>One
thing is for sure, I do miss seeing Karch/AJ in action!
But, hopefully we'll see them out on Tour again soon!
happened! I just received an e-mail from Karch
today! I'm quite surprised! I have a tendency to think
people are mad at me when they are in fact not. This is
the case since I had relayed a message to Karch about
someone wanting to interview him a year or two
ago.<br><br>Anyway, Karch just wanted to say "hi" and sends his
holiday greetings.<br><br>Perhaps we could get him to
chat in here one day or everyone can post questions
and I'll send them to him.<br><br>Take care
everyone!<br>Lynn

I don't give out Karch's e-mail address since I
have already had problems with privacy issues.
Besides, he has changed his e-mail address. So, I couldn't
really tell you.<br><br>As for "snail" mail, I would try
writing to the AVP. I have tried in the past to write to
Karch, but I got no answer.<br><br>I hope this helps in

Home<br>By MIKE BRESNAHAN, TIMES STAFF WRITER<br><br>There
was a party Friday in Buenos Aires, a gala honoring
the top volleyball players & coaches of the 20th
century, but some guests of honor didn't show up because
of a tiff over transportation expenses.<br><br>A
standoff between the sport's international governing body
& USA Volleyball left Karch Kiraly & former
national team coach Marv Dunphy caught in the middle ...
and stuck at home.<br><br>The host of the gala, the
Federation Internationale de Volleyball, believed USA
Volleyball was responsible for the airfare for 3 U.S.
athletes & 2 coaches, a total cost of about $7,500. USA
Volleyball, which has struggled financially in recent years,
said the FIVB should have picked up the tab for
Kiraly, Dunphy, Sinjin Smith & Randy
Stoklos.<br><br>Smith used frequent-flier miles to get to the gala.
Stoklos paid his own way. Doug Beal, the 5th U.S. award
recipient, is coaching the U.S. national team in a
tournament in Buenos Aires & attended the
ceremony.<br><br>The FIVB agreed to pay for honorees' lodging, meals &
local transportation. It drew the line at airline
tickets.<br><br>"It's unfortunate that U.S. Volleyball couldn't afford
to send their stars," FIVB President Ruben Acosta
Hernandez said. "We would've loved to have seen [Kiraly &
Dunphy] in Buenos Aires."<br><br>USA Volleyball lost
$400,000 last year, mostly because of travel costs
incurred playing in international tournaments before the
Sydney Olympics, said Kerry Klosterman, executive
director of USA Volleyball.<br><br>Klosterman said the
honors were appreciated, but not the costs. "We frankly
didn't have the money budgeted to do it," he
said.<br><br>Kiraly, a member of gold-medal indoor teams in 1984 &
1988 & a gold medalist in beach volleyball at the 1996
Olympics, said he was "a little baffled" by the FIVB's
request.<br><br>"If you're going to name some awards & they're only
every 100 years, you'd think the FIVB would pay for
it," he said. "I totally understand USA Volleyball's
response. They're pretty tightly strapped for
cash."<br><br>Kiraly said he probably wouldn't have attended the gala
in any event because he was moving from his San
Clemente home this weekend.<br><br>In a letter sent to
Kiraly after he'd declined the invitation, an FIVB
official wrote that USA Volleyball should pay the airfare
because the FIVB already invests heavily in
volleyball.<br><br>"It's important for the associations of each country to
understand that they're not only there to sit & wait &
receive, but that they also have responsibilities towards
the world volleyball family," wrote Jean-Pierre
Seppey, FIVB general manager. "We consider it ... a duty
of USA Volleyball to send you all to the 20th
century awards."<br><br>Smith, who has longstanding ties
with the FIVB & is the president of the beach
volleyball world council, said he was surprised by USA
Volleyball's refusal to pay.<br><br>"They have money in their
coffers, it's just how they choose to spend it," said
Smith, who retired from the sport after the Manhattan
Beach Open in August. "They don't choose to apparently
spend it to send athletes from our country to receive
awards. It's a shame.<br><br>"The FIVB considers the U.S.
a very, very important part of the growth of the
sport on a worldwide basis. If the USA is not [fully]
represented, it's a big problem."<br><br>Dunphy coached the
U.S. team to a gold medal in 1998 and still has ties
to USA Volleyball, having served as an assistant
coach in Sydney.<br><br>"It's unfortunate that there's
a tug of war," said Dunphy, who also coaches at
Pepperdine. "You've got to look at it on both sides. On their
side, if you have a party, you want people to come.
[But] I didn't call USA volleyball &
recently, a man came into my Dad's office and
asked my mother how my father knew Karch because I have
a signed picture of him that Karch signed for my
Dad's birthday. My mother told the man that "my
daughter knows him." He was quite impressed, but he didn't
even know Adam Johnson. So, I guess Karch's name is
one of the quite recognizable names in the
sport.<br><br>Thanks again Karch for signing the photo and especially
for personalizing it for my Dad! I truly appreciate
your thoughtfulness!<br><br>See ya!<br>Lynn
I think Karch will be spending the majoritiy of
the off season wiht his family. I'm also certain he
is be training again once the new schedule is out
next year. While it depends on when the season starts,
you can count on Karch to start training early for
next season to get back into his winning
form.<br><br>As far as partners go, if AJ is healthy, he might
choose Adam. But, if not, then I assume he'll play with
Ack again.<br><br>However, I would like to see Karch
play with the young George Roumain. It would be great
to see Karch bring up another young player like he
did with Kent Steffes and teach him. Karch would just
have to play defense while George was at the net
blocking. Or they could switch off blocking
duties.<br><br>Just some food for thought during the almost start of
the off season with the KOB sean ender slowly coming
to a close.
I got my phots back today. I'll be sending them
to Unca Nick so he can scan them (THANKS UNCA
NICK!!). You'll see Ack in one of Karch's Speedo hats. Ack
covered up Karch's name and wrote "ACK" as well as
covering up Speedo and replacing it with
"MonkeyButt."<br><br>In another photo, Karch is taking the time out with
myself and Ghen for a photo. I was nervous asking him,
even though I've known him since 1994. So, Ghen askd
him! It is a great photo! One I'll definitely add to
my scrapbook as well as future beach volleyball book
(one day in the near future).<br><br>I also took pix
of Karch speaking about Sinjin when he made he way
up to the stage with Mike Dodd and then while he was
on stage.
Karch also had some warm words for Sinjin Smith
while Smith was retiring. Karch also joked with Sinjin.
It was great to see some of the living legends there
at Manhattan Beach, like Gene Selznick, Dane
Selznick, Chris Marlowe, Mike Dodd, Tim Walmer, Carl
Henkel, and others.<br><br>All of the players (men and
women) gathered on the court while the retirement took
place.
I talked to Karch on Saturday and asked him to
please pose for a picture with me. He said yes. He also
signed a copy of his book that I gave to my great
friend, Ghen. It was a real treat for the two of
us!<br><br>Thanks Karch!
I was sitting next to Karch's father, Dr. Kiraly
on Saturday. Karch's and Ack's first match was
against Chris Makos and Chad Turner. Here's the scores of
that game: Chris Makos/Chad Turner, (27) def. Scott
Ayakatubby/Karch Kiraly, San Clemente, Calif. (6), 21-17, 11-21 &
15-12 (49)<br><br>Loser’s Bracket, 1st-round (losers
eliminated, place 25th, $180): Ayakatubby/Kiraly (6) def.
Frohoff/L. Quinn (22), 23-21 & 21-18 (43)<br><br>Loser’s
Bracket, 2nd-round (losers eliminated, place 17th, $600):
Ayakatubby/Kiraly (6) def. Jennings/Lane (21), 21-18 & 21-14
(39)<br><br>Loser’s Bracket, 3rd-round (losers eliminated, place
13th, $1,020): Ayakatubby/Kiraly (6) def. A. Witt/L.
Witt (14), 21-16 and 21-14 (36)<br><br>Then, Karch/Ack
lost a tight one against Ian Clark and Adam Jewell.
They placed 9th this weekend, which isn't too bad considering Karch has been out
of action for some time. But, look for Karch and Ack to do better this weekend
in Manhattan Beach!
