The Article:

UNITED and England keeper Nigel Martyn insisted today that Leeds defender
Jonathan Woodgate can fill the gap left by the injury blow to Rio Ferdinand
for both club and country.
Woodgate is set to partner Dominic Matteo at the heart of the United defence
as Leicester on Saturday after which he will discover if his international
exile following his well publicised court case last year is over.

But while Leeds boss David O'Leary has no problems in naming the 22 year old
defender on his team sheet, England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson must wait for
the FA to give the green light to select the young international.

While Martyn admitted on Friday that losing Ferdinand was a big blow, he is
optimistic Leeds and England can plug the gap.

"Rio is a great player and would be a loss to any team, internationally and
at club football," said Nigel.

"But we know he is not going to play, although there is another
international who can step straight in, so it's lucky we're strong in that
department that we can have somebody to come in and cover.

"In playing behind him week in and week out, you're able to admire his
consistency. You don't get a mistake out of Rio, who is very commanding. He
has been a great acquisition for us.

"It was hard for him when he first moved, but seeing how he is playing now
was how he was playing at West Ham in that he was confident and consistent.

"I don't think he started badly when he first came, although a few people
said he did, but he has settled in now and he is a great defender.

"We're hoping the injury is not too serious. We need him here, first and
foremost, and for his country he has held down the centre-back spot and he
is looking to make that his own for the World Cup."

So can and should Woodgate be allowed to resume his England career against
Italy at Elland Road next week?

Martyn continued: "Woody has been in and out this season. He picked up an
injury at Chelsea which hampered his progress because he was doing really
well, but I thought he was excellent against Blackburn on Sunday.

"He is good enough for international level. Hopefully now he will get
picked. He is a popular, likeable lad among the players, so we all want him
to do well.

"He has the ability to go with that. It would be nice to see him in the
England side, he is certainly good enough to be included.

"I hope he is, although it depends on how he is does this Saturday because
he has only been back for one game, but the manager would like to look at
him. Hopefully everything will be cleared and he will be picked.

"He has shown tremendous strength of character to come back from what he has
been through. Football is a release because you can enjoy doing something
you are good at, and you can stay concentrated on that.

"He didn't disgrace himself when he made his one appearance a few years ago,
but he is a great defender.

"He is quick - you don't really realise how quick he is because of the way
he runs - he reads the game, and he is good in the air. So he has all the
attributes you need. It's down to him now."
