Summary
MESA, Ariz. (AP) Miguel Tejeda's two-run homer capped a seven-run Oakland
rally in the eighth inning that carried the Athletics to a 13-11 victory over
the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
Sammy Sosa and Chris Stynes each hit two-run homers and Joe Girardi, who
had four of Chicago's 21 hits, had a solo shot for the Cubs.
The A's trailed 8-6 entering the eighth before roughing up Courtney Duncan
and Carlos Zambrano.
Singles by pinch-hitter Scott Hatteberg, Carlos Pena and Mike Colangelo
filled the bases and finished Duncan. A walk to Jeremy Giambi forced in one run,
a single by Adam Piatt drove in two runs, a single by Olmedo Saenz and an error
on the relay by second baseman Bobby Hill delivered two more runs before Tejeda
completed the outburst with his third spring homer.
Sosa's homer, his team-leading fifth of the exhibition season, sailed over
the left-field scoreboard and triggered a five-run fifth-inning that gave
Chicago a 7-6 lead.
The drive followed a leadoff bunt single by Corey Patterson and cut
Oakland's lead to 6-4. Stynes' homer, his second, came two outs later and scored
Roosevelt Brown.
The Cubs went ahead 7-6 on Girardi's third straight hit, a walk to pitcher
Alan Benes and a double by Delino DeShields.
Moises Alou, playing for the first time since March 18 after being
sidelined with a strained muscle in his left side, singled in the Cubs' first
run in the third. Girardi hit his first spring homer in the fourth, Alex
Gonzalez singled in a run in the sixth, and the Cubs got three runs in the
eighth on Girardi's RBI single and Angel Echavarria's two-run triple to right
which Piatt lost in the sun.
Chicago's first seven runs were off Erik Hilgus. He worked 4 2-3 innings
and gave up 12 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Jason Bere started for the Cubs and lasted only 2 2-3 innings. After
pitching two scoreless innings, he was battered for five runs before being
knocked out in the third.
Eric Byrnes' leadoff homer, his third and team-leading 15th RBI, began the
barrage against Bere. After two outs, seven consecutive batters reached base.
Giambi singled and Frank Menechino walked, both runners scoring on Terrence
Long's triple.
Eric Chavez walked and Tejeda singled in Long. Greg Myers' ground-rule
double drove in Chavez.
Cody McKay singled in the A's other run in the fifth.
Notes: The Cubs will play their final home exhibition game Wednesday at
HoHoKam Park, and will send opening day starter Jon Lieber against Arizona's
Randy Johnson. ... A's catcher Greg Myers left after three innings with a
bruised left wrist.
