(ot)<br><br>TORONTO (TICKER) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs could not
snap their winless streak, settling for a 1-1 tie with
the Detroit Red Wings on Dmitri Khristich's goal 6:07
into the third period.<br><br>Igor Korolev took a shot
from along the right boards that was stopped by
goaltender Chris Osgood. But the rebound fell in front of
the crease and Khristich lifted it over Osgood's left
shoulder for his fifth goal.<br><br>The Maple Leafs are
0-3-2 in their last five games, their longest slide
since going 0-4-1 from March 16-25, 1998. But Toronto
is 3-0-1 in its last four meetings with
Detroit.<br><br>"We had some good chances and got better as the game
went on," said Toronto goalie Curtis Joseph, who had
35 saves. "We were losing 1-0 and to get a point it
was a bit of a victory for us."<br><br>Although
Toronto was 0-for-6 on the power play and outshot 36-26,
the Leafs had the best scoring chance in overtime.
With about three minutes remaining, Yanic Perrault
took a cross-ice pass from Bryan Berard, but Osgood
made a sliding save to deny his shot from the top left
crease.<br><br>The Maple Leafs had a two-man advantage for a span of
1:04 in the third period, but failed to get a good
shot on net. Osgood appeared to intentionally knock
the goal off its moorings as Toronto was setting up a
shot.<br><br>"He tried to do it twice, he missed the first time
and got it the second," said Toronto manager Pat
Quinn about Osgood. "We saw it on the bench, What can
you do?"<br><br>Brendan Shanahan scored his sixth
goal of the season and 400th of his career to give the
Red Wings a 1-0 lead 8 1/2 minutes into the contest.
Pat Verbeek intercepted a pass that deflected off
Khristich's skate and sent a pass to Shanahan in the left
faceoff circle. Shanahan waited before winding up and
firing a slap shot into the top right corner of the
net.<br><br>Shanahan, who had six of his nine shots on goal in the
first period, recorded his first NHL point when he
assisted on a goal by Verbeek for the New Jersey Devils in
the 1987-88 season.<br><br>"We were talking about
that tonight and then tonight he gets his 400th goal
and I passed it to him, so its kind of funny,"
Verbeek said.<br><br>Verbeek recorded his first point in
three games with the Red Wings after being signed to a
two-year contract earlier in the week. The Red Wings are
3-1-1 in their last five games.<br><br>Detroit outshot
Toronto, 15-6, in the opening period, but the Leafs had a
pair of good scoring opportunities. With about six
minutes left, Osgood made a sliding stick save on Jonas
Hoglund's shot from just outside the crease. Two minutes
later Osgood stacked the pads to turn away Sergei
Berezin's shot from the right of the crease.
