Last night, the UNO Mavericks took on the
University of Manitoba in their annual exhibition game at
Omaha's Civic Auditorium (known as the Bullpen). The Mavs
won the contest 6-1 (which would make this a no
contest) in their warmup before next week's Stampede.
Goalies Rodney (Hot Rod) McLeod and freshman Dan Ellis
almost split evenly the time in the pipes with McLeod
starting the game and Ellis coming in just before the
10:00 mark of the second game. McLeod faced 10 shots by
the Bisons and allowing the only goal for Manitoba.
Ellis stopped all 13 shots he faced. Another freshman
that impressed me was Andrew Wong. He ended with 2
points on the night (0-2-2), but had opportunities to
score several times. He was flying all over the ice.
Play was somewhat scrappy with several roughing and
slashing calls throughout the game. All we here in Omaha
have to say is "Summer's Over! About freakin' time!"
