I have been a lurker in the group since I attended Alexandra's clinic
in Georgia in late November. I started playing around with CT with my
gelding this summer while he was on stall rest from a leg surgery. I
didn't really understand how it could change my entire training
philosophy until I went to the clinic, and haven't looked back since...
It is amazing how much I didn't know or understand about my horse, and
this has given me some really neat tools to work with him, but I am a
bit stuck and am hoping for some advice :-).
What I have learned about my horse is that he strongly prefers me to
tell him what to do. He is incredibly aware of body position, and is
extremely sensitive. Anything that is directly related to me asking
him to do something, he picks up very quickly, and almost immediately
becomes incredibly light.
On the other hand, he isn't comfortable with problem solving at all.
He seems to have very little 'try' (for lack of a better word) when it
comes to solving on his own. For example, he is rock solid with
targeting, so I am trying to teach him to retrieve a cone from the
ground. So, he follows the cone to the ground no problem, and will
touch it repeatedly. However, if I withhold the click (and we are
talking for one or a max of two touches) he has one of two
behaviors..he either quits totally and goes to eat hay OR if there is
a horse next door, he lunges at the bars between the stalls with his
ears pinned. So, I am not sure how to proceed with trying to get him
to problem solve a bit.
Thanks!!
