Description


This is a group to discuss the indigenous Dravidian Martial Arts of the ehnic Tamils and Malayalees of

present day Southern India. The origins of Dravidian martial arts date back to the 2nd to 3rd

century BCE. These combat styles were described in Sangam literature of ancient Tamilakkam,

present day Tamil Nadu/ Kerala of Southern India, and Northeast of Sri Lanka. These arts were

practiced by warriors of the Chola, Pandya, Pallava, and Chera kingdoms. Such styles have

comprised of various forms such as Kuttu Varisai, Varma Kalai, Kalarippayattu, and an array of

weaponry.
