Hi
I know this group is for Montgomery County, but the Baltimore Metro
group has six members and the last post was in July 2002. I'm
looking for someone from my area to play against or someone who can
direct me to a group in my area. I'm a 3.0 player. Any help is
appreciated.
Steve

Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month!
I'm up for some tennis, I'll probably come out on Sat. to Olney.
As for USTA, Iooked at membership when I wanted to get tickets to the ATP tour events in DC. You have to be a member if you want to get tickets. As a member you can also "volunteer" to help out with the ATP events and maybe meet some pros.
Melissa ( somewhere around 3.0 player)
Doug will probably come out with me (he's a beginner, so anyone just starting and looking for someone to play, I encourage you to come out as well)

Also, I can play Sunday. Would LOVE TO. I will keep an eye out to see who else responds and wants to play.

Attached is the 'Welcome Guide" that explains our program. We have a group of 10 or so players at your level, who come when they want. Most parties will have 3-4, 4.5 players. BUT (and this is explained more in the attachment), at an 80 person party, there are 5 ability groups. The top rating range for men might be 4.5 to 3.9 and for women, 4.3 - 3.8. SO, this is social doubles, not really competitive doubles. I cannot guarantee you good tennis for every match because we stress playing with different people throughout the night. In one particular match, you might be the best player on the court by far. In general, we have a lot of fun, so you should try this out at least once to see if it's for you. PS we also have one round of men's doubles during a typical night.
To come to a SCWDC tennis party, here are the instructions:
At the web siite www.scwdc.org, select "tennis" and then "indoor parties". You will find a list of the dates and locations of the next parties, and prices for non-members with an advance reservation, and the volunteer leaders' addresses. Print this out and pick the party you want to go to. Just below the list of parties (the big blue block which composes the list), put your cursor on "Tennis Party Reservation Form", click and download the reservation form. Send your check to the leader of the party you want to go to, at least a week ahead of time, or preferably eariler. Reservations are accepted are a first come, first serve basis when accompanied by check. The leader will call you to confirm that you are in the party, leaving a message on your home answering machine, cell phone, or work voice mail, whichever you supply on the reservation form.
If you can't attend and notify the leader, we only charge a small cancellation fee, variable based on when you cancel, only $3 if you cancel 3 or less days before the party, $5 if you cancel the day of the party. All of this info is on the Indoor Tennis web page.
Pretty much there is always space until just a few days before the party and even the day of the party, but we do cutoff new signups when we reach an ideal rotation base, 48, 56, 64, 72, or 80 players. Food planning is easier for the leader, the sooner you reserve. There are plenty of openings in our January 2003 parties.
Directions to all party locations are on the SCWDC web site at the end of the indoor tennis party web page.
It's convenient to reply and initially help you now by email. When you come to a party, the leaders and helpers at that party can answer any questions you may still have. We are a fun group, try out at least one party. For $20 or under, you get a minimum of 2 hours of social tennis, food and drink, in a modern tennis club environment...except Georgetown Prep, which is inside a tennis bubble (still food and drink, just a little rustic atmosphere).

For everyone who is still in the mood (and shape) to play tennis this winter...
Jennifer Garica noticed a article in the November 29th Weekend Section of the Washington Post (that extra session that comes only on Fridays). The article describes several tennis organiations that are arranging tennis "shindigs" around the DC area for those dedicated people that still wanna play tennis during the next several months (up till April, I think)...
The Ski Club of Washington DC (http://www.scwdc.org) has tennis parties/socials/ and other interesting and seemingly entertaining events during the winter months and thoughout the year. The website has alot of information on the sporting/recreational/social events that are arranged through the Club, about one and/or two events a week, for those that don't like getting bored...
And, for a little slipping and sliding, some of the tennis parties are held on clay courts...

Anyone interested in an indoor tennis night on December 7? The time

Thanks to all who participated in our fist indoor tennis social.
Dinner beforehand was fun, too! (And even though no one sang "Happy
Birthday," we kinda celebrated the birthdays of Kashif, Mai Mai, and
Melissa.)
Many participants contributed good ideas about how to rotate players
around. The result was lots of fun and challenging tennis.
At the end of the night, there was great interest in doing it again,
at least once a month in January and February 2003. I'll send an
email soon to see if anyone is interested in doing one Saturday in
December 2002. It's a good way to work off the calories you'll be
ingesting over the holidays!

Oh come on, I know you all are experiencing tennis withdrawal by now.
Keep your game sharp and JustDoIt!!!

First, if you received this email, PLEASE send a reply email to khaque@... (NOT to the group). In this email please include 1) your full name 2) email address 3) primary phone number 4) secondary phone number 5) preferred method of contact (email or phone) 6) a a brief description of your interest (or lack thereof) to continue to be a member of the league and 7) any suggestions/comments that you have about the league. This description might include the approximate number of matches you would like to play per week/month. The above information will allow us to update everyone's profile and see where the league and its members currently stand.
In the past week or so, the so-called "Planning Committee" has been brain-storming about the future of the league. The Committee seven members are: Kashif Haque, Jennefer Garcia, Eric Reid, Joceyln Villongco, Inbar Gazit, Mark Nitsche, and Murali Thirukkonda. Below are the changes and ideas that we have made regarding the league:
1. To facilitate members' active (or not so active) daily schedules, there will be TWO sites for formal tennis gatherings. Every Saturday at 8 am, we will have a gathering at Olney Manor Regional Park [16601 Georgia Ave. Olney, MD 20832]. Every Sunday at 1 pm, we will have a second gathering at Montgomery College-Rockville Campus [Campus Parkway Tennis Courts). Players can either schedule matches in advance, or show up and take their chance and see who needs a playing partner (for singles or doubles).
2. On certain Sundays at 1pm at Montgomery College-Rockville, we will attempt to have a "Social Tennis Event". This will consist of players placing their rackets into one pile, and having rackets choosen at random to decide the matches. This will be a fun and exciting way to pick matches, and play/meet other players in the league. On these "Social Tennis Event" days, there will also be an attempt for members to meet "Outside the Baseline" after the tennis is completed. This will most likely consist of people meeting at a local restuarant to talk about tennis (among other things). If there is enough interest, will try arrange this "Social Tennis Event" once or twice a month. THE FIRST "SOCIAL TENNIS EVENT" WILL BE HELD THIS SUNDAY (OCT 13) AT 1 PM AT MC-Rockville (weather permitting).
3. Now that the weather is getting cooler (at least for some), we are attempting to arrange Indoor Tennis Saturday Nights (from 8 pm to Midnight) at Cabin John Regional Park. The price is ~264 USD for 3 courts, and ~ 528 USD for 6 courts. We are hopeful that we can get between 10-14 players to reserve 3 courts, which will be between 20-26 USD per person. For more information contact Joceyln Villongco (majocelynv@...).

There are now many members in this league. Some are new to the game
and some have been playing for years. Regardless of level or
ability, it is always a good idea to practice good tennis etiquette.
Here are some of the basic, unwritten rules of tennis, which are
guaranteed to keep the game fun and friendly! (Link to website at
the bottom of article and I also added to the "links" section of the
Yahoo Group site.) Enjoy!
Jocelyn
Tennis Etiquette
Tennis has its official rules, then it has The Code of Tennis, the
unofficial rules of good tennis sportsmanship. Any serious player
should take the time to read both. Players who don't understand the
rules, or worse, The Code, are more likely to experience a gradually
shrinking pool of opponents.
Besides the rules of tennis there are also some important unwritten
laws which come under the title of tennis etiquette. Tennis is a
social game, a game involving simple politeness and consideration.
Everyone will enjoy the game so much more if those standards are
maintained.
Here are some of the rules which are most important:
Talk quietly when standing near tennis courts that are in use.
Never walk behind a court when a point is still in play. Wait until
the point is over and then cross as fast as possible.
If people are already on your court, don't disturb them until their
time is up.
Always come prepared. Bring not only balls, but towels and water to
drink when it is hot.
Wear sneakers for tennis. Other shoes may wear out quickly, hurt your
feet, or damage the court.
When you're ready to play, put racket covers, ball cans, jackets
etc., out of everyone's way.
To see who serves first, spin your racket or toss a coin. If you win
the toss, the choice is yours. You may serve first, or you may choose
to receive first or to pick which end of the court you want to start
playing on. As a third choice you may make your opponent choose
first.
When sending balls back to a neighboring court, roll them on to the
back of the court. Never send them back while play is in progress.
Offer to bring new balls or organize a system to decide who brings
the balls.
Retrieve balls for your partner and your opponent.
Don't criticize your partner, offer encouragement.
Call your own lines and let your opponent hear the call. If the ball
is good say nothing and play on.
Always respect the linecalls of your opponent.
If there is a disagreement, offer a let. In other words, replay the
point, even if it was a second service.
Ball management
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
Even the most efficient tennis players spend more time between points
than playing points. Getting the balls in the server's hands is the
biggest time-waster. While a brief rest between points is often
needed, many players slow the game down by a factor of two or three
by failing to collect balls and get them to the server efficiently.
Here are a few tips that will speed up the game and make it more fun
for everyone:
Balls should be kept either in hand, in a pocket or ball clip, or
against the fence directly behind the center mark.
Any time your opponent has to walk a significant distance to get a
ball, look around your side to see whether you can use that time to
collect a ball that's similarly far away.
If the server needs a ball, the player closest to a ball should get
it and send it to the server.
Send a ball to the server so that he/she can catch it easily with one
hand. Advanced players seem to be able to get the ball to bounce
once, softly, to the server, but most less advanced players should
make the ball bounce twice to ensure that it arrives at a low speed.
Never hit a ball hard toward the server's side with the intention
that he/she will eventually collect it off the fence. Aside from the
possibility of hitting someone who's not expecting a ball to be
coming, you'll also probably cause the ball to bounce off the fence
and roll either too far away or into the court where it will become a
hazard. Also, it's rude to make the server pick a ball up off the
ground when you could have sent it so that it could be caught after a
bounce or two.
Keeping score
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
The server must announce the score at the start of each game and at
the start of the second point and each subsequent point in each game.
If the receiver cannot hear the server's announcement of the score,
he must ask the server to speak louder. You can't wait until the
server believes he has won the game to try to reconstruct the scoring
point by point.
Line calls
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
The Code addresses this topic quite well, but here a few points that
many players often overlook:
If you're not sure whether your opponent's shot is in or out, it's in.
If you return a first serve that your opponent can clearly see is
out, your opponent won't be sure why you're not calling it out. It's
often hard for the receiver to tell on fast serves, and you must give
the server the benefit of the doubt, but if you can see that you
confused your opponent by playing an out ball, offer to replay the
point. See The Code's interesting discussion of calling serves in or
out.
In doubles, you should not call balls wide when they land near the
far sideline, unless the call is obvious and your partner was somehow
hindered from seeing the ball land.
If you are the receiver, and your partner is on or near the service
line at the start of a point, your partner has the best view of
whether a serve is in or long. You can make a call if he doesn't, but
always defer to his judgment. (You generally shouldn't disagree with
your partner's calls anyway.)
Demeanor
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
Try to look like you're having fun, even if you're playing badly.
Your opponent does not want to see you looking miserable, at least in
a friendly match, and you're likely to play better if you try to
present a positive state of mind.

Dear tennis players,
We plan to host our first tennis tournament during the last weekend
of September (September 28-29).
The tournament will take place at the Rockville Montgomery Community
College off MD-355.
First order of business: to qualify for the tournament a player must
complete at least 10 regular season games! NO exceptions. So please,
make sure you complete those games in the next 4 weeks.
We would soon send you the official registration form that you would
have to mail together with a 10$ check in order to reserve your place
in the tournament.
This money will be used for tennis balls, trophies, sports drinks, T-
shirts and more.
At this point we want to get an idea of how many people are going to
play at the tournament. Please reply to this email and let me know if
you plan to participate.
We will send more information about the tournament soon.
Yours,
The tennis4fun team
I just drove by the newly renovated Bethesda Chevy Chase High School
and saw that they have six brand-spankin' new courts. They weren't
quite ready to play on this weekend, but since school starts this
week, I imagine they would be ready by next weekend.
Jocelyn
Tennis4Fun,
I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend! Currently we have 60-Players on
our roster, 32 players have played matches while 28 players have
joined the league but have not played any matches. We currently have
13 members with incomplete Profiles and NTRP ratings.
Recommendation:
1.) Login to TennisEngine.com and Update your Profile and NTRP
rating, if for any reason you are unable to do this, please email
Murali Thirukkonda tkonda@... with your information and he will
add it for you. Members who's profile is not updated (Correct Name,
Contact Information and NTRP Rating) by Friday August 16, 2002, will
be DELETED from TennisEngine.com
2.) It's HIGHLY recommended especially for player whom have not
played a match to join us Saturday's at Rockville Community College
to meet other players and begin to schedule matches, players can also
pair up and practice. For more information please email or contact
Inbar Gazit inbar.gazit@....
3.) Players with NTRP ratings of 2.0 should begin challenging
players at that level, once successful in beating your same level,
you should begin challenging NTRP 3.0 3.5. If player is currently
3.0 begin challenging players at that level and work your way up.
(This is only a recommendation to help improve your game and prepare
you for tougher competition).

Self Rating System. The attached text file describes how to rate yourself.
Perhaps someone who's a little more familiar with Yahoo groups or
TennisEngine could post this somewhere for people to reference?
The file is an excerpt from the following FAQ you can find on the web:

6.2 - USTA Self Rating System
Self-Rating Guidelines:
The National Tennis Rating Program provides a simple, initial self-placement
method of grouping individuals of similar ability levels for league play,
tournament, group lessons, social competition and club or community programs.
The rating categories are generalizations about skill levels. You may find
that you actually play above or below the category which best describes your
skill level, depending on your competitive ability. The category you choose
is not meant to be permanent, but may be adjusted as your skills change or as
your match play demonstrates the need for reclassification. Ultimately, your
rating is based upon your results in match play.
To place yourself:
A. Begin with 1.0. Read all the categories carefully and then decide
which one best describes your present ability level. If your abilities
range between two catagories, then choose the lower one.
B. Be certain that you qualify on all points of all preceding categories
as well as those in the classification you choose.
C. When rating yourself assume you are playing against a player of the
same sex and the same ability.
D. Your self-rating may be verified by a teaching professional, coach,
league coordinator or other qualified expert.
E. The person in charge of your tennis program has the right to reclassify
you based upon match results, if your self-placement is thought to be
inappropriate
Rating Categories:
1.0 This player is just starting to play tennis.
1.5 This player has limited playing experience and is still working
primarily on getting the ball into play.
2.0 This player needs on-court experience. This player has obvious
stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic positions for singles
and doubles play.
2.5 This player is learning to judge where the ball is going although
court coverage is weak. This player can sustain a slow rally with
other players of same ability.
3.0 This player is consistent when hitting medium pace shots, but is
not comfortable with all strokes and lacks control when trying for
a directional intent, depth, or power.
3.5 This player has achieved improved stroke dependability and direction
on moderate pace shots, but still lacks depth and variety. This
player exhibits more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage,
and is developing teamwork in doubles.
4.0 This player has dependable strokes, including directional intent,
on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the
ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with
some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving
and teamwork in doubles is evident.
4.5 This player has begun to master the use of power and spins and is
beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of
shots, and is beginning to vary tactics according to opponents.
This player can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place
the second serve and is able to rush the net successfully.
5.0 This player has good shot anticipation and frequently has an
outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured.
This player can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short
balls, can put away volleys, can successfully execute lobs, drop
shots, half volleys and overhead smashes, and has good depth and
spin on most second serves.
5.5 This player has developed power and/or consistency as a major weapon.
This player can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive
situation and hits dependable shots in a stress situation.
6.0 These players will generally not need NRTP rankings. Rankings or
to past rankings will speak for themselves. The 6.0 player typically
7.0 has had intensive training for national tournament competition at
the junior level and collegiate levels and has obtained a sectional
or national ranking. The 6.5 player has a reasonable chance of
succeeding at the 7.0 level and has extensive satellite tournament
experience. The 7.0 is a world class player who is committed to
tournament competition on the international level and whose major
source of income is tournament prize winnings.
With this list you can rate yourself. Should you realize that your
abilities range between two categories, then the lower one should be used
to determine your playing level.
Have fun and keep enjoying this great sport.
