The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will be surveying steelhead trout in Soquel Creek tomorrow, Wednesday, December 9, 2009.  We are in need of two more volunteers to help with this important work.  Please call or email Noah Parker (NMFS) today if you are able to help.  His cell phone number is (831) 247-2440 and his email is: noah.parker@....  See below for additional details. Please forward this on to anyone you think may be interested.

Each year the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, with the assistance of several agencies and volunteers, has sampled the fish populations of Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF).  This is part of an overall effort to monitor steelhead trout in the Soquel Creek watershed in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  For the eighth year we have the good fortune of having the National Marine Fisheries Service play a lead role in this significant research.  In fact, they have completed new studies (that go beyond our initial monitoring goals) that include monitoring juvenile steelhead growth.
The same five locations within SDSF are inventoried each year.  Fish are netted and collected in buckets after they are momentarily stunned by an electrofishing device.  Steelhead trout are the primary fish present, but lamprey and prickly sculpin are also occasionally found.  Most of the steelhead inventoried are known as "young-of-the-year."  Young-of-the-year are fish that hatched in the spring from eggs laid in the streambed gravels by spawning adults in the winter.  Young-of-the-year are usually 2 to 3.5 inches in length when measured in the fall.
Volunteers assist in netting and measuring the fish and collecting other information.  The day will involve a challenging hike over difficult terrain to get to the creek.
The scenery and company are terrific, and the project is a great way to learn more about the local fishery and watershed. For more information, or to volunteer, please call Noah Parker.  Please feel free to forward this information to anyone you think might be interested. Thank you for your assistance.

The annual Romp dinner took place last night at Shoreline with Scot Nicol of Ibis.
I knew nothing of him escept this guy is the Ibis guy.

Turns out Scot is a gifted speaker...humorous and informative while being down to earth.
He mentioned a couple of web-sites. Fat Cyclist is a blog by a dad of four. His wife recently passed away from breadt cance. Fatty has turned this into good by becoming extremely good at fund raising for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Yesterday he wrote a letter to Johan Bruyneel. The second link is Johan's response. The third link is another favorite of Scot's. Enjoy.

Nice - good variety... Nice job at both your first cross and your first DH race
Rafael! Way to go Dan as well (I saw that third place when I was perusing the
results last night - didn't know to look for Rafael as well though). Two TWW
podiums on Sunday at the CCCX DH - very cool. I'm going to *try* to hit at
least one of the remaining races in that series if I can. I noticed DeFeibre is
finally racing in Pro/Semi-Pro, which may give me a bit of a break in Expert...

of about 60 or 70 racers in the Cs.

sandbag also. We did a couple practice runs, and watched how the other rides
take certain turns, trying to learn whatever we could. We saw and hung out with
Dan Abernathy before the start. Eventually went up for our starts. I had a
pretty good race, except I went off the course at one point and rode my way back
on. The lower half was pretty flat so we had a mad sprint toward the end. I
finished second about 7 seconds my buddy out of 6 in our category. I think we
had a bit of an advantage over the other DHers since this course required quite
a bit more pedaling. Our third almost-sandbagger friend decided to enter sport
since he has a tiny bit of DH experience, otherwise our group would have swept
the podium. This was kinda fun and I'll probably be back for more! Congrats to
Dan for making his podium also!

Scott,

Nice work clawing your way back up. It can be super demoralizing to have a
mechanical, or worse yet, get crashed out by somebody right at the start. Good
for you!

The frick'n corner got me last year to. Somebody ran me right into the tape, I
got all tangled in it. It wasn't funny to me, but I'm sure from the spectator
viewpoint it was frick'n hilarious! Any who, glad you landed on your feet and
not your shoulder like poor Haneous.

I had to bounce early on a countuv I had to finish cleaning up our place in SF.
We just moved to San Mateo(last monday)! I look forward to joining some of the
southern peninsula rides now that home isn't as far north.

Cheers,
isaias

Probably about 70 degrees by 10am. It was a slight bummer to arrive (once again) so close to my race start, that I had no time to get in a practice lap. But, no biggie - I was pretty warmed up from sprinting from my far-off parking spot to the starting area :-). I think this is perhaps my favorite local cross course, with a fair amount of good singletrack. I hadn't checked where I was in the points after race #3, and was taken by surprise when they called my name (and "Team Wrong Way!") for the Nineteenth place spot during the call-ups. Sweet! Ok, so I'm not a pro, and I'm not even a contender for the top-5 in Master Mens B's 35+ in this series, but it's still a rush to have your name called out like that over the PA system...

I barely had time to make my way up to the front lineup when all of the rest of the 35+ B's started to surge forward, jockying for a place as close to the front as possible. Impatient bastids. Cool - OK, so I'm finally getting a good starting spot (maybe the first time this season?). 5-4-3-2-1, and we're off in a mad dash up the asphalt road to the right hand turn onto the dirt trail. A few roadie-sprinter-freaks of course able to outsprint me from behind. Then... BAM! One of them decides to dive in front of me and immediately crash going into the first dirt turn. I ended up sort-of running over his bike, going OTB, but landing on my feet, and then realizing after hopping back on and pedaling about 20 yards that I had lost all the air out of my front tire (first flat since going tubeless - must have folded sideways when we tangled). F(&*!!! Why is it that at almost every cross race that I've been in, there are always a few dudes who should know that they absolutely suck at riding in the dirt, that feel the need to sprint ahead of everyone at the start and then crash?

So I start walking my bike, then pull off the trail completely, and just stood there and watched as all of the 35+ Bs go by, followed closely by all of the 45+ B's. I began walking along the side of the trail, wondering if I should just hang it up and bail... Screw that - I've been looking forward to this race, and it's an hour drive each way for me - I'm finishing this damn thing! So, I did my best impression of a slow-jogger-carrying-a-bicycle, and gradually made my way to the mid-point of the course where the neutral tent was. Dude threw me a wheel, I popped it on and started riding my @ss off to try to claw my way back. By the end of the first lap I started to catch the slow 45+ guys. Gradually over the next batch of laps, I managed to catch the tail-end of a large 45+ group, and then even managed to pass a handfull of 35+ers.

I have no idea how I ended up placing, but at least I left knowing it wasn't DFL. (yeay!).

Didn't see any other TWWers this time - Hane (though I didn't expect him after his crash at the last BASP), Allan, Leonard, or even Isaias.

Next weekend is the series final at Coyote Point - which is cool, as that place the coolest playground around - good venue for the Schlachter family.

Thanks Matt. Cross Dressing is Isias's thing - and yours too I guess. Tattoo:
my wife would freak. Skinny jeans: too constrictive - I need breathing room.
I'm still searching for my cross "thang" I guess... In the mean time, my cross
racing has been going pretty well - at least I'm happy with how I'm doing with
my limited training regime (Weds South Bay Ride, and usually one other weekend
ride with one or both of my sons, or a cross race...). I keep meaning to be a
good TWWer and post a race report or two, but with a third kid now at home, time
is... You can guess. I've been the sole TWWer doing both the Pilarcitos Bay
Area Super Prestige Series, as well as the Surf City series - with the noteable
exceptions of Daniel at the Halloween Surf City, and regularly seeing Alan and
Matt L., and occasionally seeing Hane - all of them in their other team's cross
kits. No dig, just stating the facts :-) They've actually been my regular
cheering section, so I'm very stoked that they're there. I return the favor by
heckling Matt and taking off before Allan's Cat-A SS start. Yes, Alan is racing
As - and doing quite damn well I must add.

Anyhow - here's a nice looong rundown of my races thus far for anyone who might
give a flying yahoo. It's long, so delete now if you'd rather eat a worm than
read a cross report. All races except for the Halloween race were in Mens B
35+:

9/5/09: LARPD #1 (Livermore): started the year with a 12/23 placing - almost
perfectly at the mid-pack mark, which totally followed suit with how I did at
almost every race last year. Sorta fun course, very flat though.

10/4/09: BASP#1 (MacLaren Park, SF): everyone told me this was a good "mountain
bikers course" going into it. I didn't get that... It had some switchbacks
going up, and some hillside singletrack, but no more single track than Aptos
high, and I thought it was pretty boring. Anyhow - pulled my usual mistake of
lining up too far back, and then cursing the Barny's who are going slow as
snails in every technical corner - this is always worse in the first lap - in
this case it was painfully slow. At one point I couldn't help myself and even
yelled out (to no one in particular) "if we were going any slower, we'd be going
backwards!". The guy behind me commented "and you'd be on the perfect team"
(TWW), which made me laugh. In the end, I suffered to get 33/76. Pretty darn
close to that half-way mark of 38th, but at least on the good side...

10/11/09: Surf City#1 Soquel High: I always enjoy racing at Soquel - not
necessarily because of the course, but because of the nostalgia/juxtaposition.
See, this is where I started High School as a freshman back in 1981. I only
went there for that one year (even longer story). This is where I went from Jr.
High Geek to High School Stoner. I used to hang out at the "smoking section",
which interestingly, is part of the typical cross course now... I'd smoke
cigarettes during breaks, and get high at lunch. This place is where I took a
wrong turn in life. At least I didn't totally fry my brain - For example, I
remember there was a major storm that Winter which devestated SC County. School
was closed for two weeks due to Aptos Creek overflowing and flooding downtown.
Anyhow, here I am now, 28 years later, happily married, three amazing children
of my own, solid career, happy. It's just trippy to go back there and race my
bicycle... OK, back to the present: this race was fun. At one point I lunged
ahead of a guy that kept skidding in the turns in front of me, almost causing me
to wreck into him (happened repeatedly). So, I got sick of it and finally
lunged in front of him right before one corner, and did the same thing to him
(sliding out right in front of him and slowing *him* down). I actually didn't
mean to slow down, but it happened, and apparently that pissed him off. Next
thing we're bumping elbows around the next few corners (this was in the
serpentine grass section). Another racer behind us actually told us to "settle
down guys". I was actually having fun, but we settled down. I let him
temporarily take the lead, but stole it back a few hundred yards later and I
never saw him again. I managed to get 10th/32 - the best I'd done in B's at
that point. Holy crap - I'm in the top third! Riley, Liam, Shaney and Aleah
cheered me on, then Riley and Liam raced in the kiddie cross race, got medals
and treats, and had a blast.

10/25/09: BASP#2, Coyote Point. One of my favorite cross venus. Fun course,
and the boys get to play at one of the coolest kid playgrounds I've ever seen
while I'm out racing. Poor Hane had a crash at his start, cracked his helmet
and looked like he ruuuung his bell. Sorry dude. I managed to get 25th/69,
sticking with the almost top-third theme.

10/31/09: Surf City#2 SC Fairgrounds(Halloween). Showed up in the family
minivan with the whole family in tow, right as the MM 35+ B's were taking off.
Damnit. OK, signed up for MM 35+ A's. Two goals: don't get lapped (by Don
Myrah), and don't DFL. I like that course. I managed to not get lapped (by Mr.
Myrah), and got 39th/44. Mission: accomplished.

11/1/09: Surf City#3 SC Fairgrounds. The day after - MUCH smaller turn out (and
I wondered how many of them were hung over :-)). No family this time, but I
baaaarely got there in time for MM 35+ B start. No warm up, registered and went
directly to the start line. I handed my wallet to one of the Bellas working the
start line (I think it may have been Miss Mary - not sure). Starting whistle
blows - damn I actually felt good. Maybe there is something to the
school-of-thought that you should get some short intensity riding in the day
before a race - Eric T. and Ross M. were telling me this after the previous
weeks' Weds South Bay Ride. Ended up getting 4th/20. Best place in B's yet.
In the last lap, I traded places with a guy I've gotten to know at the races
named Kieran Sherlock (nice guy - not related to Allan, but this guy is almost
as strong). I was ahead of him the whole race, and then he caught me in the
last lap and we traded places about 5 times, with him getting me the last time
just after the last hike-up. Podium went down to 3rd place, and he would have
won a nice big delicious looking bottle of imported beer, but wasn't present -
damn roadie...

11/14/09: BASP#3, Sierra Point. It's a little boring, and very flat, but for
some reason I kinda like that course. As Matt said, I managed 27/72 -
struggling a little behind that 1/3 mark... Scrounged a Grilled Bacon Chile
burger and fresh beer from the Team Sheilla Moon booth - ooooh that was good.
Then some spiced cider as it proceeded to get damn cold out there. Heckeled
Matt a little - I think he's getting slower. :-) It must have been freezing by
the time Allan raced (on his spectacularly beautiful new Ibis) - though I don't
see his time in the results - wussup???

Next up: BASP#4 at Golden Gate Park on 11/29. Last years course there was one
of the funnest...

Damn, that was a fun break from work... :-)

I have a couple of containers of this stuff.

2 types of Revenge
1 Perpeteum
2 Spiz (vanilla and chocolate).

Some of this stuff was for racing but that's not going to happen anytime soon.
The Spiz was for Patrick to help him gain weight but he has continually refused to drink any of the protein type drinks.

Revenge always turns into a brick so a hammer works well with it.
The Spiz expired in June and the Perpeteum expired over a year ago.
If anyone wants to try one of these before I toss them, let me know.

If someone is out of work and would like to consider a small side job, my house has a number of wires in a central location that have never been wired into a box. Some of these are cable and some probably phone lines.

I would think the job is small for someone who knows what they are doing. the wires need the correct adapters into a box labeled with what they are. Searching for these types of people can be difficult and time consuming and I think there are people out there looking for small side jobs. I trust someone that bikes more.

Hello
The San Francisco Bay Area Bike Expo is many things to many people.

First it starts with the people. The community gathers to buy and sell from each other. Race teams and clubs look to part with their past season gear in order to raise funds for next year. Individuals look to sell an obscure bicycle part, only to buy another hard to find, one of kind bicycle part. Non profits and coalitions spread their good words. It brings the community together. Everyone wins at the Swap.

On the other side, we have an Expo Trade Show, where custom frame builders show the fruits of their labor and bicycle clothing manufactures give you the details on their threads.

Then there is the action, the BMX stunt show is about kids inspiring other kids to jump on their bike. The Dirt Jump Competition displays the evolution of the mountain bike and its riders.

Up next is the racing, where we have a unique take on Cyclocross Racing where racers will start and finish indoors and through the infamous corrals of the Cow Palace.

Finally, there is the style. Custom, Vintage, and Low Rider bicycle show bringing history, culture and eye candy.

The Fashion Show is the exclamation point where the latest street and commuter ware is strolled out.

There will be something for everyone at the SF Bike Expo. It is many things to many people, but it is and always will be about the bicycle.

The following events are scheduled:

Cyclocross Racing called Cross Palace by Bike Monkey. starts @ Noon.
Dirt Jump Competition named AT's Showdown at the Palace Powered by Adidas starts @ 3 PM.
BikeStyle Fashion Showby Momentum Magazine. starts @ 5 PM.
Low Rider Bike Competition by Shorty Fatz. Runs all day till 3 PM.
Custom & Vintage Show by Behind Bars Inc. Runs all day till 3 PM.
BMX Stunt Show by the First Rule Collective. Runs all day till 5 PM.
Bicycle Swap 10 AM to 6 PM
Expo Trade Show 10 AM to 6 PM

Presale tickets: $8. At the door: $10

Affordable for the vendor and swap booth spaces are still available.

 2009 Big Bike Build

You Are An Official Member of the 2009 Big Bike Build!
Thank you for your willingness to give up a very important holiday Saturday to assemble bikes for children in our community ensuring them an exciting Christmas morning with that number one requested gift item ~ A BIKE!

In order to gain entrance and participate in this year's Big Bike Build, all participants must provide a signed Release of Liability form and Photo Release form. Both forms are attached.

Also, please make note of these important dates:

  • Monday, November 30th at 7 p.m. is the Orientation Meeting at 751 So. Bascom, San Jose, Valley Specialty Center, Room BQ160. This is a mandatory meeting for the team captains and/or their alternate. We welcome and recommend individuals also attend.

  • December 11th at 6 p.m. we will be unloading bikes at the South Hall. We need your help for this and hope to convince 100 people to show up for this effort. We will have a sign-up sheet at the November 30th Team Captain meeting. Please know how many people from your team will commit to this project at that time. We will close this effort with 100 participants.

Additional information regarding the Big Bike Build processes and tools can be found at: www.turningwheelsforkids.org/events/2009

What about the Big Bike Buck Cup?
Don't forget the perennial BIKE BUCK CUP trophy! This may be your year to take it home. Almaden Cycle and Touring Club (ACTC) captured the trophy last year and Jim Schallau, the team leader of this group, has thrown the gauntlet! In the registration form Jim says,

“ACTC expects to again take home the Bike Buck Cup!”

Again? How about that? Remember, it doesn't have to be your money. Get your company to donate, get your friends to donate, get your mom to donate! People say the reason they didn't give is they weren't ask. Don't let that be the case. The children of our community are depending on us!

As added encouragement and to provide you with specific ideas for needs we have, ask your company for:

  • $5000 for Bike Build tee shirts.
  • $2500 for 50 tricycles for a group of young foster children, a late unexpected request. Can you imagine being 4 years old without your mom and dad for Christmas? Maybe a shiny trike would help!
  • $1500 for two special bike requests for handicapped children; an adult tricycle and a tandem bike.
  • $1000 for food for the Big Bike UNLOAD on Friday night.
  • $1000 for a dedicated lap top for TWFK.
  • $500 for software and an annual back-up contract.

And remember, you get credit for any of these donations because YOU were bold and dared to asked!
And don't forget In-kind donations for our raffle and you take the value for your team!

Do you know someone in a bike shop, golf course, restaurant, hotel, destination of choice, or a business owner who would give you a gift certificate for their business? That will all be yours to count in your total donation. But those need to be in soon so we can let you all know why you want to come prepared to buy raffle tickets.

This year's bike build will be the best yet!

This meeting is tonight 7 pm at Seabright Brewery in Santa Cruz.

Please keep in mind that ACCESS to SDF for mountain bikes are not threatened. However, budget issues will make them focus their resources on the timber harvest.

Greetings mountain bikers,

We have all heard about how this State budget mess is impacting State
Parks but now it's impacting CDF and specifically Soquel Demonstration
Forest (a.k.a Demo).

If you're a mountain biker then you know that Demo is the best LEGAL
place to do technical/DH style riding. We received notification that
due to the budget problems the funding at Demo will be severely cut
and all their remaining resources appear to be focused on the timber
harvest - which brings in revenue.

Also, the porta potty - which is generously provided to the community
by Specialized Bikes - was vandalized recently and this was the "last
straw" for a decision made to close the parking lot. This parking lot
was threatened due to Fish and Game concerns over the runoff and
erosion from the lot getting into the streams. Also, this parking lot
is the scene of many full moon raves - which has been an ongoing
problem for the forest management.

How does these two issues impact mountain biking at Demo? Severely.

* Trail work and any activities not associated with the timber harvest
will cease.

* They are planning a spring timber harvest in the Tractor area. They
plan to turn the Tractor Trail into a logging road (bye, bye
singletrack).

* The parking lot will be closed this winter thereby creating a
shortage of parking along Highland Way - which is less safe (break
ins, traffic).

Clearly, this issues are a serious threat to our enjoyment of Demo and
our way of life.

What can we do about it?

We have been in contact with Ed Orre - the Forest Manager of SDF - and
he has agreed to show up at the MBOSC meeting at Seabright Brewery on
Monday at 7 pm. He is a friend of mountain biking and is willing to
allow the MTB community to help out. We will be discussing these
issues and look for solutions. This meeting is only the beginning of
this process.

Clearly, this issue is bigger than MBOSC. I urge you speak to your
friends who enjoy demo who are not on these lists to get engaged in
this issue.

In the meantime, I'll be riding Demo tomorrow and appreciating the
trails and terrain.

Thanks,

--Mark

Thanks,
--Mark
