OK, so this week is the REAL last week for Peter to join us (supposedly...) before heading to Japan.  His last-request ride was Santa Cruz, which I'm happy to ablige.  We'll meet at the Rincon parking lot (big dirt lot on the right, aka "fishing hole" parking lot) on hwy 9 at 6pm, ride by 6:15.  Other option is to carpool from Xilinx lot at 5:10pm.  Let me know who's in and who wants to meet at Xilinx.

Need to ask a favor - I have some bike parts I need to swap with a guy
who lives in Martinez. He's able to drive to other places in the East
Bay to meet. I'm hoping someone heading up that way from down here
might be willing/able to help me over the next week or so - I'll owe
you a beer :-)

I'm going to be spectator at the Cats Hill Crit on Sat....but am thinking about Demo on Sunday.  My usual route is down Saw Pit, up Tractor, down Braille, then out. Should be a good 2.5 to 3 hour ride with minimal stops.

Hey all.  I'm looking to do a solid 2-3 hour mtb ride this weekend - Saturday or Sunday.  I'm open to Skeggs, Santa Cruz, or anything else with twisty singletrack.  Does anyone know of anything going on - please let me know.  Thanks!

Fathers Day gift, I got a hall pass from Shaney for the weekend.
Though I'm currently planning a slightly different itinerary for

evening and head up to Bass Lake to ride the extended 007 course
(something, like the Cannell Plunge, that I've been wanting to do for

yes you can shorten the travel on a 120 to 100 or 80, you just can't
go the other way (i.e. 80mm to 120mm)...not that there is anything
wrong with that:)

North Yuba Extension

Dain and Jackie from our last Trail Daze

Trail news: The North Yuba Extension is so close to being done we can almost taste it. We have less than two miles 'til it is complete. We've been out there every week pushing towards the finish line.

This trail is unique because it is the only non motorized multi-use trail in the Downieville vicinity. Completion of this section will add a new 14 mile trail straight out of town.
SHOUT OUT: Thanks to the Mad Cat Bicycles crew who came and helped last week.  You guys rule!
Anyone who can come up to help finish this trail will get a free paid vacation(food & housing) in exchange for some volunteer trail work hours with us. You can join our trail builders during the week or weekend - whatever your schedule will allow. Those who can get up there this month will make the difference.

Email Wayno to coordinate your visit or call the Yuba House  at 530-289-2766. Lets make this vision a reality!

Invest in us
Because our work is largely volunteer driven, your investment gets multiplied when you support us.

A $25 donation = $416 when we feed 2 volunteers for the day.
A $50 donation = $832  when we feed 4 volunteers for the day.
A $100 donation = $1664 when we feed 8 volunteers for the day.

Volunteer hours = in kind contribution of $26/hr.
That's a 1,664% return on your investment! Whoa.

SBTS can turn the price of your cel phone bill ($50) into almost 1K of in kind labor.
That's an investment you can feel good about. Please support our work.
*All Contributions are tax deductible.*

See you at the EPIC!
Ron, Greg, Wayno, Nica, Chris, Brett, Carter, Tim, and Debbie
ps. We will have a new website soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks Kat and Allan. I am racing on a 5-person team, 200+ years,

Allan has loaned me his kick-a$$ BR Lights set. No cables. Nice.

Friends,

Mark Reynolds was a family man, tech guy and avid mountain biker in
the Bay Area. His passion for the sport inspired him to create his
company "Wicked Racin" to create high quality products for gravity
riders. He was racing Downhill at the Sea Otter on April 19th and he
never made it to the finish line.

While I did not know Mark personally, his life, career path and
passion for mountain biking is similar to my own and describes the
many mountain bikers that I have the privilege of knowing in the Bay
Area. I have been contacted by close friends and family of Mark and I
have learned so much about his life in these past few weeks. I feel
saddened by the fact that I may have ridden with him in the past but I
never really got to know him.

Mark was passionate about mountain biking and wanted to bring more
people into the sport. He was generous with his time, teaching his
friends how to jump and be better riders. Mark's family have set up a
memorial fund to honor his memory which will raise money towards
projects related to mountain biking. Some of the potential projects
include:

* helping to establish a local freeride or jump park that will be
named in Mark's honor
* supporting local mountain bike trail maintenance
* purchasing a bench that will be permanently installed in one of
Mark's favorite riding spots such as the Demonstration Forest or
Mammoth Mountain

There will be raffle at the CCCX DH season finale in June which will
benefit the memorial fund. Raffle tickets will be sold at the race
tomorrow. Details about the CCCX DH race is here:
http://www.cccx.org/dh/2008/index.shtml

To contribute to the Mark Reynolds memorial fund, please visit this

As a friend and mountain biker I'm asking you to contribute to the
Mark Reynolds Memorial fund. I believe that his generosity to the
sport will benefit all Northern Californian mountain bikers and
visitors to our region. A thriving mountain biking community, great
trails and parks is an honorable legacy to Mark.

Yes..thanks.  I've played with adjusting the travel, but have decided I'm happy with full travel.  It's just too nice.  The dampening the occasional jump and high-speed blows from babyheads, ruts, etc. for me, outweighs the increase in turning performance.  I'm still able to pull off tight switchbacks (like those on Crosscut at Skeggs).  I race a hardtail with F100X...except Downieville where the Spider get its annual chance for glory or a fiery death.

Cheers,

You know the Talas has an adjustment to reduce travel from, say, 130 to 100 mm, right?.

I'm not knowledgeable on the F120, but you may be interest to know that I bought a new Spider two Summers ago and had the shop throw a 130mm Talas RLC on it (the bike shop told me it would fit the geometry of the bike no problem).  It wasn't until months later that I discovered from the Intense website that the bike was suppose to have a 100mm fork.  This freaked me out some, but I haven't looked back since.  The bike is a little less agile on tight turns, but otherwise performs well and I think that luxurious Talas fork is the best part of the bike (Gravity Dropper is a close 2nd).

One thing to watch out for though: check the clearance between adjustment knobs at the top of the fork crown and the down tube. Originally, mine barely (1/16") did not clear and co$t me big time when a rod (some main part) inside the fork got bent from a hard crash. The fork had to be rebuilt. Now I can turn the handlebars all the way around without the crown striking the fork.

So, I bought an Intense Spider back in December to replace my stolen Trek.  But with the kid, work, blabbity blah, I haven't had any time to ride it.  So I take it for a spin a Skeggs last night and Kyle points out that the fork is a Fox F120.  I always just assumed it was an F100, and never paid any attention.  So, on the new 2008 forks, can you adjust the travel internally with spacers, or are they set?  I noticed on the Fox website that all three forks (F80, F100, and F120) are all designed a little differently to optimize perfomance and reduce weight.  Anyway, the spider frame is desiged around an 80-100mm fork.  So I'm just curious if it was even an option to take the fork down to 100mm and try it out.

I'm not too impressed with them. They also tend to gleen information from free websites.

If you're looking at it for world wide travel, it could be useful.
If you're looking at it for Northern California, there is plenty to be
found at mtbr.com and just asking on this site. People will point you
to the free information.
