Thanks!
We raced on a new course, on a new ridge, on a new set of trails. It was a
short race, but oh so tricky. I never practiced a course at this venue as much
as I did for this race. It was that tricky.
I gave it my all (or close to it), but the top was so sketchy, so loose, all of
it off-camber on a series of turns back and forth across the hill in both
directions at the start. It had been a virgin hillside the day before, covered
in dry, loose DG with silt and dry grass. I lost more time than expected right
from the start, sliding out in the transition between sideslope passes across
the face of the hill, having to put a foot out to keep from losing the rear of
the bike completely. I tried to make it up in the fast sections leading to the
single track, and then on the long downhill ribbon of singletrack through a
shaded canyon, but that was treacherous, too, at speed. My 575 Yeti was not
quite stable enough in that section to give me the confidence I needed to push
harder. If only.....
I got nipped by <1 second at the finish. Dang. That was the closest I'd come
to beating the "youngster" who's taking the series in the 45+ class. Next
weekend in the Final race.

Well, a pretty pathetic showing on the XC side of things this weekend. I was
DFL of those who finished in my class. Something just wasn't right. I felt
like I was going to pass out and thought I was going to throw up for almost the
entire last 2 laps. And there was some new guy
<http://vanderhoot.blogspot.com/> flying the TWW colors in the Expert SS.
Sheesh, a TWW debut with a DNF, whats up with that? (Damnit Mike, if I knew you
were there I would have stayed to cheer you on for at least a lap or two.)
Anyway, it was cool seeing Jeff out there. He was able to show me up and redeem
himself after the spanking I gave him at the NVDC. He sped right by me on the
3rd lap or so. But I think I was only a light shade of green at that point, not
the full on neon green that Loren puked up at the SOC. It only got worse after
he went by.
The DH guys killed it out there on Sunday. Nice work Scott and Dan.
Matt
