Cale,
Does this mean that the team would start having 100 meter practices
as opposed to just skating the the outter part of the floor? If so,
this could be a much better match for me and I'm sure there's quite
a few other indoor guys around too. Never have been one much for
those longer outdoor races.....but go fast turn left works.
Thanks,
Casey

Cale,
Do you know the times yet for coating the floors? That will determine for
sure whether or not I can make it on Sunday. Please let me know.

This Sunday is the first day of floor coating at the orbit. We are starting at 7pm and it should take a couple of hours. Those of you who are committed to Sunday, please confirm to me via e-mail, and don't forget I know who you are.......Thanks everyone.....Cale
At the beginning of the clip you will seeJoey

Margo, Herb, and I, probably Greg, will be skating at Old Elm today, meeting at the mall parking lot one block north of Lake Cook and Edens expy at 5pm.........THAT IS, if this little drizzle that is going on now stops. The radar is favorable to it stopping soon. Northfield is in the northernmost edge of the precipitation. It very well might be dry at Old Elm....I will give an update in about an hour............Cale
Hard to say what Busse will be like or the weather will bring. (Dry now out this way, but cloudy. Drizzled early this morning but that stopped)
It appears the weather might be looking up in the next couple of days.... may be worth playing it safe today and skating where you feel the most comfortable and confident on conditions.

Margo and I want to skate, but we are not real confident in Busse and the possibility of more rain. I would think that Old Elm would be better, but we will go out to Busse if everyone thinks it will be okay. Any input will be considered............Cale

Hi Chris,
Yes, I was referring to the teamrainbo@yahoogroups.com email address, but
you can also include the getinline_chicagoland@yahoogroups.com email to see
if you can find anyone else. I'm not sure who's on that list or who
maintains it anymore, but it is more extensive than Rainbo's, I think.
As for nice trails in the NW suburbs, Busse Woods is the one I'm most
familiar with. I'll put it back to the Rainbo team to see if they know of
anything else that's reasonably driveable from O'Hare. I think they thought
you were looking immediately next to O'Hare (i.e. no car needed).
Chicago's inline scene isn't what it was, from what I'm told, but we still
keep trying. Good luck!

I've skated the lakeside path from McCormick in the past, and I've done
quite a bit of travel on the L -- hadn't really thought about putting them
together.
A lot of the cities I travel to have nice suburban trails in parks, etc.
I was wondering if there was something similar in the northwest 'burbs
around Chicago.
When you say online, you mean the Rainbo yahoo group? I'll try that if I
can sort out my schedule.
As a side note - looks like there is still a pretty active inline scene
around Chicago. It is pretty dead around columbus. I think there were
6 or 7 local races last year. It's down to like 2 or 3 this year.
Thanks for all the help.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Does the Hampton have a shuttle from the airport? And can your travel
partner drive the rental car too? One option might be to bring your skates
to McCormick, then send your companion back with the car at the end of the
show. You could skate downtown for however long - the path is literally in
McCormick's "backyard." When you're done, take the blue line to O'Hare and
catch a shuttle back to the hotel (or you could even try to find a route
from the Rosemont stop and skate back).
I'm a single female and have taken the blue line all hours of the night with
no problems. Of course, common sense and healthy caution applies, but I
wouldn't direct you there if I wouldn't do it myself.
Just an idea...also, if you're thinking of doing this, post a message online
and maybe someone will be able to meet up with you!
Regarding Rainbo and the indoor rink (Orbit), I know we are all planning to
sealcoat the floors next Sunday and Tuesday, so I don't think the indoor
schedule has even started yet, which is probably why the website is
"spotty."

Thanks, Chris.
I'm at the Hampton on Mannheim, about on the SE corner of O'Hare. Not much
in the way of skatable access. The show is at McCormick, so I'll be right
downtown, but I travel with another person, so I'll have to drop them at the
Hotel first. (It's a big show, so downtown hotels start around $250, & we
work for a small company -- which explains the drive).
I saw some stuff on Rainbo's site about indoor. I do short track ice -- I'm
sure I could survive indoors on inlines, but it might not be pretty. Their
practice schedule was a little spotty on the web site.
In any case, thanks for the info, I might check out Busse woods.
Chris

Hi Chris,
I work near O'Hare and unfortunately there aren't a lot of great options
that I'm aware of, but I may be able to suggest some ideas depending on
where you are staying, whether or not you will have a car, and what level
skater you are (some of the hotels have better street access than others).
If you don't feel comfortable telling a complete stranger your hotel,
though, I understand. I suspect it's somewhere near the Rosemont convention
center, probably on River Road.
If that's the case, you could probably meander your way to some local side
streets and just tool around there. I'm not super familiar with the
neighborhoods, but they're generally pretty suburban, middle/working class.
Also, try using maps.google.com with the satellite view to see what streets
near the hotel have sidewalks (at least to get you to the neighborhoods,
assuming you have no car).
Otherwise a fairly inexpensive alternative (depending on how much time you
have) would be to hop on the "L" at the Rosemont or Cumberland station and
go downtown ($2.00 each way, and it's a 30-45 minute trip one way). If you
don't mind a little street skating in the Loop, you can make your way over
to the lakefront path, which runs for about 17-20 miles, though I'd suggest
staying on the stretch between McCormick Place to the south (big convention
center) and probably Lawrence Ave to the north (4800 N). Bring a head lamp
if you do this after hours, as some brief stretches are a little dark, and
please email me if you think you might do this - I could tell you how best
to get to the path. Also, bring shoes b/c you can't skate on the L.
Conversely, you could drive about 20 minutes west and try the trail in Busse
Woods, which is located just south of I-90 and just east of I-290/Hwy. 53,
near Schaumburg. There they have an 8-mile loop within a forest preserve.
Wish I could tell you which runways will be shut down at night for
maintenance, but of course you'd get arrested (sounds fun though, huh?)! :)
Hope this helps. If I think of anything more or if you have more specifics
you can share, I'll let you know whatever I can.
