PUREFOODS DOWNS COKE, GAINS SHARE OF 4TH

Wed, 12/02/2009 - 22:39 — junior

The Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants had their contribution making their special
company event more meaningful.

The Giants scored their first back-to-back victories in the 35th PBA season,
following up their 68-63 win over the Sta. Lucia Realtors Saturday with an 88-79
whipping of the Coca-Cola Tigers at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

"We really prepared hard to break our win-loss-win- loss ride. It came at the
right time when we're celebrating a special event," said Purefoods coach Ryan
Gregorio.

The Giants chalked up a sixth win in 10 games in the 2009-2010 KFC Philippine
Cup on the day Purefoods and Hormel Foods International Corp. celebrated their
10th year of partnership.

Company bigwigs stood as witnesses as the Giants got back at the Tigers, nailing
the win that tied them with the Talk n Text Tropang Texters at third place
behind the Alaska Milk Aces (9-1) and the San Miguel Beermen (8-2).

"We're well within the leaders. This is sweet for us but definitely there's
still a lot to be done," said Gregorio.

Purefoods was the lone team beaten by Coca-Cola in the first round. The Giants
exacted revenge even with Kerby Raymundo confined on the bench with a sore knee.

Wing men James Yap and Peter June Simon both played well, combining for 40
points, six rebounds and four assists.

The two themselves presided over a key fourth-quarter run that shattered
Coca-Cola's bid.

The Giants broke away from a 68-70 count, handing the Tigers a ninth loss
against a lone win.

"I'm happy both James and PJ, who struggled in the first round, came out and
dished out excellent games tonight. They stepped in a special game. I think it's
a good sign for us," said Gregorio.

"Kerby is negative on MCL and negative on ACL. But something is hurting inside
his knee. It's been my philosophy as a coach that if someone's hurting, I won't
jeopardize his career," said Gregorio on Raymundo's status.

Don Allado assumed Raymundo's role as starting big forward and the former La
Salle Archer came through with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal
and one block in 31 minutes of action.

He had 10 as the Giants took the half at 40-36.

Yap and Simon, however, stood out in the end as they starred in Purefoods'
back-breaking run at the finish.

Simon had 11 of his 18 points while Yap made nine in the final canto. (SB)

The scores:

Purefoods 88 - Yap J. 22, Simon 18, Yap R. 11, Allado 11, Artadi 6, Artadi 6,
Maierhofer 5, Reavis 4, Adducul 3, Timberlake 2, Salvador 0.

Coca-Cola 79 - Rodriguez 21, Ross 13, Cabagnot 12, Macapagal 11, Espino 7,
Rizada 6, Gonzales N. 6, Bono 2, Gonzales W. 1, Allera 0, Calimag 0.

Quarterscores: 21-18, 40-36, 63-58, 88-79

Giants throw weight around cellar-dwelling Tigers

12/03/2009 | 11:02 AM

Peter June Simon finished off what James Yap started as Purefoods turned back
Coca-Cola, 88-79, in Wednesday's main game of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the
Araneta Coliseum.

Simon rattled off nine straight points, capped by two booming three-pointers, in
a telling 11-2 Giants run midway into the fourth period to finally rip open what
had been a very close contest at that point.

That scoring binge by Purefoods allowed it to break free from a tight two-point
contest and make it 79-70 with 5:41 left to play.

Simon finished with 18 points in backing up Yap, who topscored for the Giants
with 20 markers.

Yap caught fire in the closing minutes of the third quarter, rallying the Giants
from a seven-point deficit to take a 63-58 lead entering the payoff period.

Roger Yap and Don Allado each added 11 points for Purefoods, which won
back-to-back games for the first time in the All-Filipino tournament to improve
to 6-4 overall.

The Giants were able to avenge their first-round loss to the same Coca-Cola team
even in the absence of starting big man Kerby Raymundo.

The star center out of Letran didn't suit up owing to a swollen left knee he
suffered in the Giants' 68-63 win over the Sta. Lucia Realtors in Surigao last
Saturday. He averaged 15 points and seven rebounds per game for the team.

The Tigers fell further down the cellar with a 1-9 card.

Larry Rodriguez paced Coca-Cola with 21 points, most of them coming in when the
Tigers made a furious third-quarter run to seize their biggest lead of the game
at 54-47.

But James Yap brought the Giants back by nailing two crucial three-pointers late
in the period.

From there, Simon took over.

After Mark Macapagal gave the Tigers their last taste of the lead, 70-68, Simon
began hitting his stride, his back-to-back trey putting the Giants in front,
76-70.

Giants inconsistency gnaws at Gregorio
BY NOLI CORTEZ

PUREFOODS coach Ryan Gregorio is eager to trade one rollercoaster ride for one
on a magical carpet.

He expressed this much after his team's 103-69 win over Rain or Shine last
Sunday that continued the Giants' up-and-down campaign so far in the KFC-PBA
Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

"The result is a victory for us, but we're still waiting for a chance to grab
two straight wins. We're really hoping we'd finally nail it," said Gregorio
after the game that was paved by a splendid first half and an even more fiery
windup.

The win enabled Purefoods to bounce back from a 76-92 loss to San Miguel Beer
last Wednesday and improved its record to 4-3.

Gregorio is hoping their disconcerting trend turns for the better. "It's been a
rough rollercoaster ride for us so far and I am pretty sure sooner than later we
will stabilize," he said.

Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, rookie Rico Maierhofer still led
Purefoods with 15 points as the Giants notched the victory, their most lopsided
in three seasons, or since a 114-73 victory over Coca-Cola in December of 2006.

The output was a conference-tying low for RoS and matched the Tigers' output in
a 21-point loss to Alaska last Oct. 23, which, coincidentally, was the
tournament's previous worst blowout.

After being foiled in its bid to follow up on its breakthrough 86-81 victory
over erstwhile unbeaten Alaska last Friday, Rain or Shine dropped to 1-7 and for
naught went Ryan Arana's game-high 20 points.

Gregorio himself gave ample reason why his team should not savor the RoS game
and instead focus on their next one, against Alaska on Sunday.

"Coming into the game, we knew they (Elasto Painters) were coming off a
highly-emotional game against Alaska and we really wanted to pounce on their
weary legs and I think we did a tremendous job challenging their shooters and we
just caught them on a night wherein their legs weren't present," he stated.

"We had enough time to really plan things out after our loss against San Miguel
and we grabbed 65 rebounds, they only had 35. That's a good indicator of how
weary their legs were and how fresh ours were. Pretty much it was a battle
between a tired team and a fresh team."

There was really no denying the Giants' resolve and this was typified most after
the Elasto Painters crawled back from an 18-point deficit to within 52-64.

James Yap (14 points) led a 9-0 run spanning the last two quarters to pave the
way for a bigger 21-4 surge from an 82-63 count.

Purefoods readily set the tone by easily taking the opening period 24-17 before
finishing the half with a 16-point spread.

Maierhofer was already flirting with his double-double in the first 24 minutes
of play with 13 points and eight rebounds. What's more, he surprisingly drained
back-to-back triples, the last giving the Giants a 42-24 cushion.

"Rico played good basketball on both ends of the floor and I thought the biggest
break was when he made two straight treys in the second quarter and it opened up
things for us, offensively, " noted Gregorio.

"Rico, I thought, played good basketball the whole game and it's nice because I
didn't really see the need for him in the fourth quarter because of the cushion
that we had."

Texters, Giants open second round drives
(The Philippine Star) Updated December 02, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Talk n Text and Purefoods, among teams finishing with
above .500 percentage mark in the first round, take on separate opponents to
start their second-round campaigns in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup elimination
phase at the Araneta Coliseum today.

The Tropang Texters face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at 5 p.m., hoping to
duplicate their 85-76 win in their previous tiff, then the Giants play the
Coca-Cola Tigers at 7:30 p.m., looking to avenge a 79-93 defeat in their initial
meeting.

"From hereon, every game is a big game as teams jockey for prime position.
That's how we're approaching the game against Rain or Shine," said TnT coach
Chot Reyes.

"We ended the first round on a high note, winning against Sta. Lucia. We are
determined to start strong in the second round and get our first back-to-back
wins in the conference," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

The Texters start the second round with a 6-3 win-loss carryover card while the
Giants are tied with the SLR Realtors at 5-4, Rain or Shine at 2-7 and Coca-Cola
in the bottom with at 1-8.

The Giants breached the .500 mark in the first round as they won their first
match, lost the second then went on a win-loss-win-loss ride till the end.

Purefoods limited its opponents to an average of 78 points in its five won games
and gave away an average of 95 points in the four games it lost.

"We must really give emphasis on defense. We must dictate the tempo and not
allow Coke to get confident. Execution, taking care of the ball and free throw
accuracy are other aspects we must work on to achieve stability and win
consistently," said Gregorio.

Meanwhile, Purefoods and Hormel Foods Int'l. Corp. mark their 10th year of
friendship and partnership today with special commemorative activities during
the Purefoods-Coca-Cola game. These include a jumpball ceremony with US Amb.
Kristie Kenney, PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, Hormel Int'l president Richard
Bross and Purefoods Hormel president Francisco Alejo doing the toss.

The Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants will also wear commemorative jerseys/special
uniforms and a halftime dance showdown between Purefoods' mascot and the kids
from an orphanage.

In another development, San Miguel forward Arwind Santos emerged as the
statistical points (SPs) race leader after the first round of the elims,
compiling 350 SPs for an average of 38.9 per outing.

Sta. Lucia's Kelly Williams was a close second with a 38.1 average, followed by
Alaska's Willie Miller (35.6), Talk n Text's Mark Cardona (33.4), Alaska's LA
Tenorio (31.3), Ginebra's Ronald Tubid (30.0), Alaska's Joe De Vance (29.6),
Talk n Text's Jimmy Alapag (29.1), San Miguel's Dondon Hontiveros (28.6) then
Ginebra's Jayjay Helterbrand (28.4).

Purefoods' Rico Maierhofer was No. 1 among the rookies, placing 26 overall with
23.1 SPs per game.

Undrafted rookie Joshua Urbiztondo was the surprise second with 16.2, then came
Barako Bull's Ogie Menor (14.0), Rain or Shine's Jervy Cruz (13.6), Burger
King's Ronnie Matias (12.4) and Coca-Cola's Chris Ross (11.9).

With the numbers he's piling up for Smart Gilas, top pick Japeth Aguilar should
have been a premier Rookie of the Year candidate had he opted to stick it out
with Burger King.

Texters, Giants on guard vs dangerous foes

By Arman Carandang

12/02/2009

Talk `N Text and Purefoods go up against separate opponents today, hoping to
boost their stocks in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup that's heating up further with
teams in the upper half jostling each other for the first two outright
semifinals berths.

The Tropang Texters, for sure, are not to take Rain or Shine for granted when
they clash in the curtain raiser at 5 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum, owing to the
lesson they got from a game against lowly Barako Bull in the first round, and
against Burger King last Friday.

The Elasto Painters are at the bottom of the standings with their 2-7 win-loss
slate, but it was them who dealt Alaska Milk its only loss in 10 outings.

The Tropang Texters have been playing loose lately, andd last Friday, they
trailed the King Whoppers by 30 points, and spent the game chasing their foes.
They were just fortunate to hit their strides late in the game as the King
Whoppers folded up.

Meanwhile, Purefoods which is celebrating their 10th year of friendship and
partnership with Hormel Foods International Corp., takes on cellar-dweller
Coca-Cola in the main offering at 7:30 p.m. in a game where US Ambassador
Kristie Kenney will do a ceremonial toss in the jump ball. She will be joined by
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios and Purefoods Hormel executives.

The team will be wearing commemorative jerseys/special uniforms in the game, and
there will be a dance showdown during halftime featuring TJ Giants Mascots and
kids from an orphanage.

The Giants are coming into the game still smarting from a 68-63 victory over
Sta. Lucia realty last Nov. 28, and that Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said they
want to make a big follow-up to that win.

"We are determined to start strong in the second round at get our first
back-to-back wins in the conference," said Gregorio, adding that defense will be
given emphasis against the Tigers, who are deep at the bottom with 1-8 record.

In the second game at 7:30 p.m., Purefoods Tender Juicy shoots for its first
back-to-back wins in the conference when it faces the tail-ender Coca Cola
Tigers.

The Giants of coach Ryan Gregorio finished their first-round campaign with a
shaky 68-63 victory over Sta. Lucia Realty on Saturday at the Robert Z. Barbers
Memorial Sports Center in Surigao del Norte.

"We ended our first round on a high note. We are determined to start strong in
the second round and get our first back-to-back wins in the conference," said
Gregorio.

"Defense will be given emphasis against Coke. In our five wins, we limited our
opponents to 78 points. In our four losses, we gave up 95 points," he added.

Coke, despite a shake-up in the coaching staff, ended its first-round campaign
with a 104-113 loss to the Kings for a league-worst 1-8 slate.

Bo Perasol was promoted as interim coach while Kenneth Duremdes became the
team's alternate governor to the PBA board.

The game against Coke is special for the Purefoods franchise as it celebrates a
decade of friendship and partnership with Hormel Foods International Corp. The
franchise belonged to Ayala Corp. when it entered the league in 1988. It is now
with San Miguel Corp.

Besides the players' commemorative jerseys, the big bosses of the franchise, led
by Hormel International president Richard Bross and Purefoods Hormel president
Francisco Alejo, will watch the game live.

They will join PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios and United States Ambassador to
the Philippines Kristie Kenney in the ceremonial toss.

DEFENDING champion Talk `N Text guns for solo third when it battles Rain or
Shine Wednesday in the 35th Philippine Basketball Association-KFC Philippine Cup
at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters are riding high on the crest of their back-to-back wins, the
last of which was against Burger King, 118-105, to close the first round of the
elimination in a tie with the Ginebra Kings at the third spot with identical 6-3
slates.

The Texters are again favored over the slumping Elasto Painters (2-7) in their 5
p.m. encounter, while the Purefoods TJ Giants hope to improve its 5-4 card when
they collide against the cellar-dweller Coca-Cola Tigers (1-8) at 7:30 p.m.

The TJ Giants, who nipped the Sta. Lucia Realtors in their last game, hope to
score a follow-up to that win as they celebrate their 10 years of partnership
with Hormel Foods International Corp. to stay within striking distance from the
league leaders.

Purefoods even arranged special commemorative activities during the game by
having US Ambassador Kristie Kenny during the jumpball ceremony with PBA
Commissioner Sonny Barrios, Hormel International President Richard Bross and
Purefoods Hormel President Francisco Alejo.

Coach Ryan Gregorio's wards will also wear commemorative jersey for the special
occasion and a dance showdown will also be held during halftime.

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- Purefoods outperformed Sta. Lucia in the
conference's lowest-scoring game here Saturday, and the Giants finished above
.500 at the close of the initial round of the KFC PBA Philippine Cup
double-round elimination phase.

In a battle between the Finals protagonists two seasons ago, the Giants subdued
the Realtors, 68-63, in their out-of-town showdown at the Robert Barbers
Memorial Sports Complex and caught up with their victims at fifth place halfway
through the elims of the all-Filipino tourney.

It was the lowest-scoring game in the league since Barangay Ginebra defeated
Rain or Shine 63-58 on Christmas Day in this very same conference last season.

Purefoods and Sta. Lucia will sport identical 5-4 win-loss cards at the start of
the second round Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City with
pacesetting Alaska Milk (8-1) going up against Barako Bull (2-7) and
second-running San Miguel Beer (7-2) taking on Burger King (3-6).

The Aces zapped the Energy Boosters, 99-83, while the Beermen whipped Whoppers,
117-99, in their first-round meetings.

Burger King starts the second round at 3-6 while Barako Bull is tied with Rain
or Shine at 2-7 with Coca-Cola in the bottom of the heap at 1-8.

The last placer after the two rounds misses the playoff phase in this
all-Filipino tourney topped by Talk `N Text last year.

Purefoods tied Sta. Lucia in the middle of the standings halfway through the
elims as the Giants sustained their alternating wins and losses ride in the
tourney, emerging triumphant in the Surigao del Norte stop of the Phoenix Fuel
PBA on Tour.

Kerby Raymundo led the Giants with 15 points with Paul Artadi and Roger Yap
adding 10 apiece. James Yap shared only seven points while playing with a sore
knee.

Raymundo and James Yap scored the first two baskets of the game and the Giants
held on to the lead to the finish.

The Giants took the first quarter at 18-13, sat on a 33-26 cushion at halftime
and roared to their biggest spread at 46-31 before completing the wire-to-wire
win.

The Realtors, who defeated Purefoods in seven games in the Finals two seasons
ago to win their first and only Philippine Cup title, came out flat from a
six-day respite and suffered a first loss in their last three games.

Sta. Lucia ace guard Ryan Reyes struggled for only six points while key
off-season acquisition Gabby Espinas went scoreless for the first time in an SLR
jersey.

Kelly Williams paced the Realtors with 16. (SB)

The scores:

Purefoods 68 -- Raymundo 15, Artadi 10, Yap R. 10, Pingris 9, Simon 9, Yap J. 7,
Reavis 4, Maierhofer 2, Allado 0, Adducul 0.

Sta. Lucia 63 -- Williams 16, Yeo 11, Urbiztondo 8, Daa 8, Misolas 7, Reyes 6,
Aquino 3, Omolon 2, Jaime 2, Espinas 0, Larong 0.

Giants turn back Realtors in low-scoring PBA road game
11/28/2009 | 09:08 PM

Purefoods turned back Sta. Lucia, 68-63, in a low-scoring road game of the
KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Saturday night at the Robert Z. Barbers Memorial Sports
Complex in Surigao City.

Kerby Raymundo led the Giants' cause with 15 points, while Paul Artadi and Roger
Yap had 10 each in Purefoods' fifth win in nine outings to tie its victim at
fourth place.

The Giants struggled from the field early on, shooting just 37 percent
(13-of-35) in the first half.

Then again, the Realtors were even worst.

They shot 8-of-29 for 28 percent, allowing the Giants to take a 32-26 lead at
the turn and control the game the rest of the way.

Kelly Williams paced Sta. Lucia with 16 points, while Joseph Yeo was the other

Giants survive Realtors' late game run

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 11/28/2009 10:16 PM

MANILA -- Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants survived Sta. Lucia Realty's mighty
comeback and escaped with a 68-63 win Saturday night in the KFC-PBA Philippine
Cup at the Robert Z. Barbers Memorial Sports Complex in Surigao del Norte.

The Giants nearly squandered an 18-point lead midway in the fourth period as the
Realtors, behind Kelly Williams and Josh Urbiztondo, staged a furious run that
fell short, denying the Realtors a three-game win streak.

Kerby Raymundo led Purefoods with 15 points while Paul Artadi and Roger Yap
chipped in 10 apiece for the team, which ended its first-round campaign with a
5-4 win-loss mark.

Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio also drew 9 markers each from Peter June Simon
and Marc Pingris to offset another lethargic performance from one-time MVP James
Yap, who was held to just 7 in the game.

With Yap struggling, Raymundo took charge, hitting 12 of his total output in the
first half. This allowed Purefoods to take a 33-26 halftime lead.

Then the bench got involved on offense and helped the team build a 63-45 lead
with 5:34 left in the game.

But Sta. Lucia didn't let Purefoods run away with an easy win as Urbiztondo
scored the next 6 points and put his team back, 52-65, 3:23 remaining. Williams
and Joseph Yeo charged with 7-0 run to close the gap, 59-65, with 1:05 left in
the contest.

Williams stole a pass in the next Purefoods possession, resulting in a split by
Urbiztondo, 60-65 with under a minute left.

Raymundo ended the Giants' scoring drought with its own split charities, 66-60,
but Williams responded with a pair of bonus shots to make it a 62-66 game with
20.7 ticks remaining.

That's the closest the Realtors could get as Urbiztondo and Pingris traded a
free throw each. Jason Misolas tried a triple but missed as Roger Yap sealed the
win for Purefoods with a free throw.

Williams led Sta. Lucia with 16 points while Yeo added 11. Urbiztondo and Dennis
each had 8 markers for the Realtors, who now also card a 5-4 slate.

Purefoods held down Gabby Espinas scoreless. Espinas averaged close to 13 points
a game prior to the match.

It was huge win for the Giants, who came from a humiliating 87-101 loss to
league-leader Alaska.

Purefoods vows to improve its defense

THE quest for the first back-to-back victory in the KFC-Philippine Basketball
Association Philippine Cup remains elusive for the Purefoods Tender Juicy
Giants.

And Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio is slowly running out of patience.

"I really thought that we're OK now, but it seems there's still a lot of things
to be done, particularly on the defensive end, which is the reason why we have
yet to win back-to-back games this season," Gregorio told Standard Today.

The Giants had a roller-coaster ride this season, despite having a potential
powerhouse squad. Two returning players and four newcomers were added to the
team in its bid to balance its roster.

Gregorio believes building the team's chemistry in an instant is easier said
than done, but the Giants need to do it as quick as possible to keep at pace
with the tough teams.

"We need to fast-track it," said Gregorio. "I know it won't be easy, but we need
to adjust quickly. We need to improve more on defense, particularly on our
perimeter players. While it's true we're a pretty decent defensive team and a
good rebounding squad, if I am not mistaken, we're no.10 in terms of allowing
points from the perimeter." Rey Joble

Backcourt Aces lift Alaska big win over Giants

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 22:02 — junior

Alaska Milk topped the first round of the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup
elimination phase, capping an 8-1 win-loss record with a 101-87 thrashing of
Purefoods at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

The Aces played a solid game throughout as they kept their domination of the
Giants whom they swept in four meetings in the 2008-2009 campaign.

At 8-1, the Aces start the second round a full game in front of the
second-running San Miguel Beermen (7-2).

The Barangay Ginebra Kings could also be at 7-2 if they can win their last two
games against the Talk n Text Tropang Texters and the Coca-Cola Tigers.

"Our Talk n Text game was big for us as we showed our resiliency and the resolve
to bounce back from a loss. But this is bigger than that. We wanted to finish on
top and we're able to do that," said coach Tim Cone after his troops got past
the Giants.

"Purefoods is a tough team. On paper, they're among those on top. We beat them
playing well all night," Cone added.

"There are a lot of other good teams out there and there's still the second
round. But we want to reaffirm ourselves. We want to continue playing on a high
level of play. That's our challenge."

Play on a high level the Aces did against the Tropang Texters and the Giants,
enabling them to bounce back with back-to-back wins after an upset loss to the
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

"You will tumble and fall sometime but the important thing is how you pick your
self up. The guys showed character in getting these back-to-back wins," said
Cone.

Riding the momentum of a 110-106 win over Talk n Text Friday, Alaska simply
outclassed Purefoods, dealing the Giants a fourth loss against the same number
of wins.

Successive victories remained elusive for the Giants who, with the loss, slid to
sixth place behind the Aces, the Beermen, the Kings, the Sta. Lucia Realtors
(5-3) and the Texters (4-3).

The deadly backcourt combo of LA Tenorio and Willie Miller had another splendid
showing with the former churning out 24 points, four rebounds, two assists and
two steals and the latter getting 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and
one steal.

Alaska, boosted by Tenorio's perfect shooting early on, took the half at 52-42.

The former Ateneo Eagle piled up 16 points in the first two quarters of play as
he went 3-of-3 from both the three-point area and the two-point zone, and
one-of-one from the stripe.

Tony dela Cruz, Larry Fonacier and Sonny Thoss also produced significant numbers
for the Aces who led by as many as 22 points, 80-58, before tapering off a bit
at the finish.

Kerby Raymundo led the losing team with 25 points with Paul Artadi adding 19 and
PJ Simon chipping in 10.

James Yap scored only eight as he sat out practically the entire fourth quarter
due to a bruised knee.

He was 0-of-6 from the three-point area. (SB)

The scores

Alaska 101 -- Tenorio 24, Miller 22, Dela Cruz 12, Fonacier 11, Thoss 10,
Hugnatan 8, Borboran 5, De Vance 4, Cablay 3, Ferriols 2, Burtscher 0, Cariaso
0.

Purefoods 87 -- Raymundo 25, Artadi 19, Simon 10, Yap J. 8, Pingris 7, Allado 6,
Timberlake 4, Reavis 4, Maierhofer 2, Yap R., Salvador 0.

Quarterscores: 25-19, 52-42, 72-58, 101-87

Purefoods tests Alaska's mettle
By WAYLON GALVEZ
November 21, 2009, 8:33pm

Games this Sunday (Araneta Coliseum)
4:00 p.m. — Sta. Lucia vs Barako Bull
6:30 p.m. — Alaska vs Purefoods

Because of the build-up Purefoods did in the off-season, Alaska coach Tim Cone
knows that a game against the Giants won't be easy.

"No doubt about it, they're one of the strong teams this all-Filipino
conference," said Cone as Alaska tests the mettle of Purefoods this Sunday at
6:30 p.m. in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces are coming off a thrilling 110-106 win over the defending champions
Talk `N Text Tropang Texters late Friday to solidify their grip of the solo lead
with a 7-1 win-loss card.

TNT dropped into fourth spot tied with Purefoods and Sta. Lucia Realty - all
with 4-3 cards.

The Aces, however, are up against the Giants who are also fresh from an
impressive 103-69 triumph opposite Rain or Shine a week ago, and eager to claim
their first back-to-back wins.

"We are set in nailing our first back-to-back wins this conference. Time and
again, we have proven that we could bounce back from a loss, but, we struggle
after a won game," Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said.

"Against Alaska, we are determined to compete and have a chance to win in the
end," he added.

To beat the Aces, Gregorio said that they should be consistent on both ends.

"Consistency is what we've been working on. Every game counts and every victory
could bring us closer to our goal of making it to the top four," Gregorio, who
will likewise rely on his 1-2 punch of James Yap and Kerby Raymundo.

Expected to give Yap and Raymundo support are the players Purefoods got in the
off-season - Rafi Reavis, Paul Artadi and Marc Jean Pingris – as well as Rico
Maierhofer, the second overall pick in the previous PBA Rookie Draft.

As for the Aces, leading them is former two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP)
Willie Miller, playmaker LA Tenorio, Sonny Thoss, Joe De Vance, Tony Dela Cruz,
and Reynel Hugnatan.

Clashing in the 4 p.m. encounter are Sta. Lucia and Barako Bull (2-6), which
dropped its fourth straight game following an 86-102 loss to Burger King last
Friday.

Cone expects no easy sail for his Aces vs Purefoods

By Arman Carandang

11/22/2009

Alaska Milk tries to keep distance from the pursuers at the upper half of the
standings as it collides with Purefoods in a game which promises hard action
tonight in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces will be gunning for their eighth win that will give them a firm grip of
the solo lead, but that could be easier said than done as they are up against
the Giants who are coming into 6:30 p.m. game boosted by their 103-69 win over
Rain or Shine last Nov. 15.

As it is, the elimination round is becoming too close for comfort, with the Aces
holding just a full game advantage over San Miguel Beer (which was playing
Coca-Cola at press time yesterday in a road game in Cebu City), and the
jockeying for better positions is expected to intensify, especially with teams
tentative in the early goings now getting better.

The Aces, for one, seemed ready to keep rolling until they were caught in their
off night by a cellar-dweller Rain Or Shine team last Nov. 13. The Aces, tough,
have the resiliency to bounce back as they did when they turned back defending
champion Talk `N Text, 110-106, last Friday.

It was one tough evening then for the Aces who found TNT a tough nut to crack,
and were just fortunate to solve their problem on defense in the fourth quarter,
with coach Tim Cone saying: "we were able to settle down and execute better
finish" to be able to pull through.

Now, Giants coach Ryan Gregorio at least have a clue as to what his team his
boys could expect from the Aces.

"We are set in nailing our first back-to-back wins this conference. Time and
again we have proven that we could bounce back from a loss, but we struggle
after a won game," Gregorio said.

Gregorio said they are determined to compete against the Aces, although his
concerns remain on James Yap and KG Canaleta, who are doubtful starters because
of their injuries.

"Every game counts and a victory (today) could bring us closer to our goal of
making the top four," Gregorio said.
