What? No nasty side.... Running bra's for woman are just as much a part
of the attire as the shoes. For me, I'm not gonna wear men's used
running shorts.... LOL!!

Larry who probably should not comment on Cheryl's posts anymore... ;-)

They may have changed in the last handful of years, but it used to be
that their "store" was more like an outlet store, where they sold
clearance items and used return merchandise. If you go, let us know if
they've started carrying all of their regular merchandise as well.

Good morning all! I'm going to be heading to San Diego for a weekend in a
couple weeks and wondered if anyone could recommend some good walking/running
paths? I'd heard of Balboa Park as being a good place. Ideal would be a 4-5
mile loop (or something I could turn into that).
Thanks!
Cheryl

week, then next week I'm going to try to move up to 5/2 intervals.

On Saturday night - after being completely saturated with news coverage all
day -- I decided to lay in bed and read a book. I didn't want to reread
something I had already read - so I finally read "Heart Rate Monitor Training
for the Complete Idiot" -- somewhat appropriate. I have had my monitor for
more than a year and rarely used it (heck I had no idea what to do with the
numbers - or how to determine my numbers).

To make a long story short - I read the book cover to cover. And decided to
give the program a month to see how it works. Today was day 1, an easy day
which equates to a truly slow day. Goal - run at less than 70% of my maximum
heart rate - or keep that number at less than 155 beats per minute. I ran
(ok - walked 80%) for 2 miles (30:34 minutes) - the slowest 2 miles I have
done in the past month!!! I would run for a small bit and my heart rate
would jump to 160 - and then I would slow the treddie down to a walk - and
then it would go to 145 or so - so I would run again. Frustrating. Of course
- the author said it would be like this in the beginning.

Tomorrow I am supposed to run "hard" or greater than 85% of my max heart rate
- which means I have to stay above 169 bpm for the entire run - then
alternate between those two types of runs for each of my efforts. My long
runs will be easy of course - since the goal there is distance - not speed.

So I am back on the books for a new month! Consistency in weekly runs - how
strange is this??

Courage is not often heard as a roar,
But as a quiet statement at the end of the day,
"I will try again tomorrow"

Wow Lani, very well said! I only too well remember watching the Challenger
take-off on tv and the tragedy as it happened...what a horrible day then, and a
horrible day on Saturday. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the
astronauts, as well as anyone else who is involved with the program.
On a cheerier note, I do like the way that Mortimer managed to sneak into that
picture!

launching of the shuttle on Thursday. You can view the photo we took
of the launch (the sheep on the left is 'Mortimer', a globe-trotting

wanted to run the marathon with Alex [who kept him in his little fanny
pack during the marathon]):

I have yet to speak to her, but I know they got photos of the launch,

On Friday, the day after the launch, we spent the whole day at the
Kennedy Space Center. We spent part of our time observing and viewing
the memorial for astronauts who passed away in their line of duty...
never did we imagine that we might be seeing the names of the seven
Columbia astronauts on this memorial.

On Saturday, we were up at 6:00am because we were driving down to
Disneyland for the weekend (it is for us a 7-hour drive each way). As
I always do, I turned on the radio as I was getting dressed. The news
announcer interrupted regular programming at roughly 6:20 to announce
that all communication had ceased from the Columbia as it was
flying over Texas, and that they were afraid something terrible had
happened.

We immediately turned on the TV, and Soledad O'Brien from the Today
Show was already discussing this. We watched in horror, the two of us,
in the same way we did when we saw the WTC on fire a year and a half
ago.

I am grateful I had the radio on. I am grateful we had to get up
early... any normal Saturday might have seen us in bed for another
three hours.

I kick myself now for not buying up all of the STS-107 merchandise we
saw at the Kennedy Space Center gift shop -- T-shirts, patches,
programs...

but most of all, I cry at the loss of seven bright, successful and
eager adventurers, who had worked hard all their lives to reach for
the stars... and I cry for their families.

As Ronald Reagan said just 17 years ago, almost to the day, in his
moving, eloquent speech about the Challenger disaster, "they slipped
the surly bonds of Earth, and touched the face of God."

May they rest in peace.

Thanks Jim! The only thing injured was my ego! Thankfully it was dark and
nobody saw me - LOL! I also doubt anyone heard me, although if they did, they
might have mistaken me for a sailor!
I'm definitely looking forward to the Indy Mini -- I'm not sure how much I'll
end up running vs. walking. The one thing I'm finding as I start on this
running voyage, is that I prefer running on the mill to running outside....the
exact opposite to how I feel with walking. I can't explain it except that
perhaps on the mill I keep my pace slower and don't get ahead of myself? Oh
well, with time and better weather I hope that will change!
Cheryl in Chicago....who is seriously considering the 3 block walk to get Krispy
Kremes.....mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

Hi all, hope you had a good weekend (with, of course, the exception
of Saturday morning's tragedy)!

Today's OR/WN: 5 miles tonight...about 90% of it walking since there
is still quite a bit of ice on the sidewalks...I hit an ice patch
about 2/3 into the 1st mile...then I hit the ground (ouch!) and the
rest was walking! I was feeling groggy earlier so took a nap and
woke up feeling like I"m getting the flu...getting outside for an
hour plus was very helpful, though!

Yea, it's a mess. I work satelite communications lab and we have a
"feed" from CNN. It's always on. I don't hear many warm and fuzzy

Congratulations Lani. You must indeed be a miracle worker. It was nice of you
to take on the task. I bow to you for your powers of persuasion.

I have to take a moment to speak my mind at John Bingham though... Those of you
who have been with this list since the beginning will understand that I am due
my taking issue with him for this. I had been minding this list all along. I
took an outsiders look at it once those of you who were running 2003 were
actually preparing for the race. I had on several occasions asked John the same
question Lani did. He would never give me the ability to help administrate. I
would have to contact each person wanting off the list the hard way and walk
them through doing it themselves... talk about frustrating... If you guys
remember back we were getting slammed with spam, and then the virus attachments
kept coming. Each time I would contact JOHN BINGHAM and ask for the ability to
do something about this since he obviously was too busy to keep up. He would
take forever to get around to adressing the issues, but did eventually fix the
problems and ignore my pleas to become an administrator of some kind. I just
want to go on record as saying I'm more than miffed by this. There are a
number of folks that have been with John since he was at the bottom. I've heard
it said a person climbing the ladder should not eric on the rungs while heading
up. I have more I want to say, but I'm a lady and will refrain from further
comments.

Hi folks;

I was perusing through our Yahoo Groups page and noticed that a number
of links on the Links page needed to be updated (there were even some
spam ones! Yuck!), so I contacted Cathy to see if she could update
them. At the same time, I volunteered to do it if she could change my
settings to "moderator" for a short period so I could go do some
housecleaning.

Instead, I got email from John B. himself, explaining that Cathy no
longer used the email she was registered on the list for, and that if
I wanted, he would just leave me as a moderator.

I'm very familiar with Yahoo Groups (I have a couple of groups I
moderate). This doesn't mean anything special (since this list pretty
much runs itself), except that now when someone emails the list and
asks to be unsubscribed, I can go ahead and do it for them manually
without telling them to send email to the unsubscribe address.

:)
