I forgot to say to Molly I am runnng the whole, well I hope to run it.
I started my training on Monday and did 4 miles of walking and running.
I am trying to get back into the running mode. Today is Wednesday and I
should be out there right now but waiting for movers to come and get my
mother's furniture as she has moved out, so will have to run this
evening when weather cools down. On my days off I am doing Pilates. I
noticed yesterday my sore muscles felt so much better after I finished
doing it.

Hi Molly, so I will finally get to meet ya! This is Pam in southern
Indiana.
Well, I usually run a marathon at 6:30, so we maybe able to run together or
close by each other and we can scream support back and forth.

Hi Molly, I'm here.  I'm doing the 1/2.  Last Oct. was my first full, the MCM.  It was the thrill of a lifetime.  Took me 6:34:11 (and yes, I also was running!)

Hi Maggie, I gained the weight also and joined Weight Watchers in April and I
love
the program and the people. I have always been into nutrition and vitamin
supplements but not paying attention to what kinds of food I ate. Well WW put
me on
the right track and when I have a bad week I have the support of the meetings.
My
weight is coming off slowly and when I get down to my goal weight I feel I will
be
able to run better. Not necessarily faster but longer and with no cramping. I
get
the calf cramps too and it could be overuse of your muscle, so slow down and
take it
easy or potassium/calcium supplements. You will have to check and see what you
think
it could be. Stretching after you run really helps too and sometimes I forget
to do
that.
I just came in from planting oriental grass shrubs outside and noticed I am
still
covered in dirt. ha I was on my way to the office in Louisville and my hubby
called
on carphone to say stay home as the weather is too nice to work in
office.......so
here I am. ha Since I did a run yesterday then today is my day off and so will
do
stretching on my Pilates Performer.
I really enjoy talking to you and rest on this Disney list. This is fun.
Oh, yes I have heard of the Connectors. That is great. I usually run on my own
and
like it too. You are your own boss. Weekends I am going to run with Sunnyside
Striders. I just joined it. I did run with Penguins but they are all men. ha
No
women in my area in that group. And they run too fast for me but they are
gentlemen
and stop and wait for me which isn't fair to them.

Hi Pam,
I walked/ran 9 miles on Sunday. But now my calf hurts, so much that I had to cut
my run short today. I've been icing and resting. don't know how long it takes to
get better. We'll see.
Anyway, I sometimes run with the Cincyconnectors group, affliated with the
national Connectors (a spin off of the Bob Greene/Oprah book "Make the
Connection.") You've probably heard of it. Mostly I run alone and like it.
I am really hoping to lost some weight but since I started 5 months ago I have
lost zip, but have toned up, gained muscle weight. Changing my food choices is
difficult for me.
Anyway, great to have you on the list!

Thank you Cathy. That's exactly how I have it scheduled, but then I
started to panic that maybe I'd loose something (confidence more than
fitness probably) in those 3 weeks. It's nice to know that I'm doing it
right & I'll be OK.

Hi Pamela,
It's great to have you join the TP-disney newsgroup. We need more posting
action!
I'm training for the Disney half. Started running in April after getting
inspired by the Flying Pig marathon here in Cincinnati.
Hope to read more of your posts.

Marce,

I would recommend doing your longest run 3 weeks before the BIG DAY,
then taper with maybe a 10-mile run 2 weeks before and a 6-mile run the
week before. That will give your body plenty of time to rest and
recover.

Marce, I think one week should be enough rest but if you feel it should be
longer
then go for it. It depends on how you feel. And also if you do your training
slowly you wont have any injuries. That's the one thing you have to be careful
about. If you feel tired, stop and walk.....don't push it. Your body is trying
to
tell you to take it easy.........some days you will feel like 6 miles and other
days only 3. It could be due to stress, diet, or too much activity going on.
So
you have to listen to your body.
Sounds like you have your schedule planned sensibly. For us guys who live up
north we have to consider the weather when training. It's hard to run in
snow......ha

Thanks Pam,

I just finished a long run of 6 miles last weekend, so I know I have plenty
of time to add a mile about every other week...I have some races thrown in
there, too. Hoping to peak at 12-ish the week before Christmas. Do you
recommend a 3 week taper or a 2 week one? That's my big dilemma right now.
I don't want to be worn out, but I want the confidence to know I can finish.

Well hopefully, Marce, they will be supportive next year. Because if I decide
not to do the last half I wont. It all depends on my running schedule as I
haven't been running much in the last three months. I had my mother living
with us and I was taking care of her but now that has all changed and so I am
not so stressed out and too tired to run.

Aim for running 10 miles at first. Don't even think of 13 miles. So each week
or every other week add one extra mile to your long run. That's how I did it.
Also, once you are on the course and hear all the music and excitement you
will forget your panic attacks and will just fall into the program.

Hi Pam! Welcome aboard. I've heard that Disney is very supportive and if
you've signed up for the full & can't finish it & go for the half instead
they'll give you the medal for the half. Of course just because they've
done this in the past doesn't mean they'll do it now, but I heard they did
that last year. I personally only signed up for the half & I'm still
panicking over what I've done. I've never run further than a 10K in my
short little running life. But hey, they have a real Penguin-friendly
cuttoff time & I'm out for the fun of it, right?

Hi Marce, I just found this site and so glad to get into a support
group. I signed up for the marathon but wished I hadn't as I haven't
been doing much running. Today I started back and it was rough. Here
I am running 4 miles and wondering how I can do a marathon. Anyway, I
will just keep at it and hoping to lose some weight along the way as
that will help me with my long runs. But this event is supposed to be a
lot of fun and so if I have to walk the last half then I will.......

Hi Maggie/zoey!

Welcome to Team Penguin and the Disney Half training. I, too, am doing the
half. I'm gearing up for my long run of 6 miles tommorrow. I usually do 3
other runs in a week...one recovery of about 2 miles & 2 harder runs of 2.5
to 3 miles. Sounds like we're pretty close to the same place in our
training. I'm working on adding milage during the week before I ramp up
the long runs, but it seems to take forever when you use the 10% rule. I'm
40 & was injured last year at about his time, so I'm taking it VERY
conservatively. I also walk for about 45 minutes a day...it sure seems to
help my running.

Hi everyone,
My user name is zoey but I'll be signing Maggie from now on.
I registered for the half in May when I had only been running for about
3 weeks. I knew it would be a great motivator for me, a giant carrot
dangling out there to keep me going and it has. I'll do almost anything
to get out of town in the midst of our gray winters in Ohio.

Currently, I'm run/walking two 3 milers a week and one long one up to
7.2 miles now. I'm incorporating some "pick-ups" during one of my short
runs.
For example, today on the treadmill I did two minute pickups at one
min/mile faster rate than my usual. I also raised the treadmill to a 3%
incline.
But I only did this for 20 min.

I'm 50 yrs old and somewhat overweight so I have to train consertively.
But so far no damaging injury! I attribute that to my 4 years of
walking and the fact that I have only been overweight for 4 years.
Before that I was a jogger in the good weather and a couch slouch in
the winter.

I'd love to hear what kind of training everyone is doing.

Hey, it's mighty quiet here in the Mouseland training group. How's
everyone's training going? Anyone other than me doing the half? I'd
be interested in seeing some training programs for a half to see if
what I have mapped out is realistic or not. Right now I'm getting used
to some long runs of around 5 miles, hoping to up that pretty soon.
Let us know how y'all are doing!

Hi,

The Runner's World Pace Team will not be there. And I haven't heard of any other
pace team doing it either. Sorry.

There are always various seminars. I'm sure they would be helpful.

I'll be in Houston in January, and Myrtle Beach and Austin in February.

Hope to see you.

I ran the rull marathon last year. It's a pretty neat event.

What I remember hearing is that they change the course some every year, but,
it's sort of theme park to theme park.

It's a VERY early start, and the walk to the start from the parking lot is a
hike. [and the walk back after the finish] You've also got some stretches
between theme parks that are a lot like running in the middle of nowhere.

But, the support is good. And, there's nothing quite like high-fiving Mickey
Mouse at the end!!
