Hi Mark,
I have run Disney 5 times--the 1/2 twice, the full twice and the Goofy
once. 09 I will try to run Goofy again.Only once was it cold and that
was the year of Goofy. I liked it cold because i don't do well in hot
weather and when it's hot...... it's HOT.
My family doesn't come to the start because it is so early and it is
very hard to find your runner. They usually see me on that long out
and back on Osceola parkway and then head over to the finish line. I
have seen people chasing from spot to spot but they must know the
roads very well. I am thankful to see family that one time and then at
the finish.
I am registered for NYC....actually I have deferred the last 2 years
and am hoping to run it this year...that is if I don't have a broken
bone in my right foot. I see the orthopedist tomorrow and will take it
from there.
Good luck in your training---what else are you doing between now and
then?

Daria recovering from my local 15K where the break may have
happened..if not broken will run a 5 miler on Sat and 5K on Sunday
and another 5K 7/26.

I agree about the disorganization. We were stuck in traffic coming out
of Pop Century and were not moving for 20 minutes----couldn't make the
left hand turn. So, we turned around and tried to use the back roads--
Osceola Parkway which should not have been closed yet-----WAS. An
arrogant trooper told us that we could not get to MGM using this
road---DUH--yes we can. We told him about the HUGE tieup at the end of
the road and that there wasn't traffic control at all---he replied
"are you from NY--this is typical Friday night traffic in Orlando" We
travel to what he calls "orlando" 4-5 times a year and it was SATURDAY
and YES you can get to MGM this way and YES we are from NY, NY state.I
told him that the roads were not supposed to be closed yet---showed
him the final instructions----did he care---NOT---after all he was in
ORLANDO.
We went all the way around and if they hadn't pushed the start time
ahead----we would not have made it and I would have been one very
disappointed Disney fan along with a disappointed 13 yo.
IT was VERY HUMID---like you said- no characters- we expected
characters in Halloween costumes. My grandson finished well ahead of
me but waited for me to come in before he did anything else. My son
did get to ride some attractions while we were running and then we
managed to all ride the ToT and Rock N Roller Coaster. We looked for
food but all we could find was turkey legs. We left, a little
disappointed, and went to Mickey D's. It was a very expensive
experience and against our better judgement we will be doing
Expedition Everest which is way more expensive for a 5K----where is my
head!
But Scott....maybe it will be better this year....maybe the traffiic
situation has been resolved. All I can say is get there early!
Have fun.

Hi Scott,

My wife and I did the 13K last year. Even though it was run by EMMI(who does
all of Disney races) it was unorganized. They had kept changing if they had
transportation to the race, where the expo was, cash registers not working
when expo opened(late too). The race start was delayed 30 minutes. By the
time I finished, grabbed some water and talked to friends, the party had
only 15 minutes left. I grabbed a $7 can of beer and walked by the area to
hear the band(which was long gone). We decided just to leave. Did no rides.
They have officially move the start back to 10 pm(which is when we started
last year) and extended the "party 1 hour. They reduced the pace requirement
to 16 min and removed the 6.5K.

The course wasn't bad but heard complaints about some "trail" running on the
dirt road that had potholes filled with water from the rain earlier in the
day. It was really humid. There were no characters on the course or parks.

We aren't doing the race this year as it wasn't worth the money last year
and they raised the price $25. $170 for a little for than a 10K is too much.
We will be at Disney during the race but be using the money for Food and
Wine.

I have pics on my website that you can check out the course.

Hi everybody,
Does anyone have first, or secondhand info about last year's Tower of
Terror 13K at at Disney's MGM Studios? I was training to walk it last year,
but fell and tore my quadricep tendon clean off my kneecap and needed two
surgeries, and rehab over a six month period to get back to where I could
start fitness walking again. I'm looking at going for it again this year.
I'm also interested to know how good or bad the 'post-race party' was. Any
info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

This Alaska cruise organized by John Bingham Racing featured a race
at every landing, whose distances added up to a marathon. It was
great, but it did a number on my arthritic knee.

For the couple weeks before departure, I had been doing races and
workouts just about every other day, with my knee being pain-free as
it had been for a long time. I had passed my 77th birthday, while
Maggie had just turned 90. (She slept while I raced.)

The cruise embarked on June 22nd. The following day, we did a
two-mile race on the ship, six laps around the deck. After a rest
the next day, we did a half-marathon at the first landing in
Juneau. The very next day, we did a five-miler in Sitka and the
following day a trail 10K in the Tongass rainforest near
Ketchikan. Although the weather was dry, the scenery beautiful and
the trail smooth, there was one steep hill after
another. Furthermore, many of the downhills were so steep that I had
to hold back actively to avoid hurtling down. (This involves
eccentric contractions that are very tiring for the muscles.) So by
that evening my knee was starting to hurt some.

During the awards ceremony the next day, I was given an award for
being "most inspiring."

The following day, Sunday the 29th, we disembarked and flew back to
Atlanta. Tuesday morning I did a 3.5-mile neighborhood walk. I felt
OK, but was quite slow. The next day I got in a weight workout at the Y.

Friday morning, July 4th, I pinned on my Peachtree Road Race number
and set forth to walk the 10K. My knee was hurting some, and it got
worse as I proceeded, until, after I finished, I stopped at the
medical tent to get some ibuprofen to relieve the pain enough so I
could walk to the MARTA and get home. (It took me two hours and two
minutes to finish the race, while normally I can do it in an hour and
a half or less.) The next morning, Saturday, I went to the Y for
another weight workout.

That evening we went with friends to a bluegrass concert at the
Barnes Amphitheater in Mableton. At this time, my knee was hurting
enough that I had to have assistance to walk back to the car. I
thought by Monday morning I would have to make an appointment with an
orthopedist. However, all the next day as well as today the pain has
been diminishing. Now it just hurts for the first few yards I walk
after getting up from a bed or chair. So for now I won't call the
doctor, on the contrary I will hope to be able to enter a 5K this
coming Saturday. (I won't do it unless I'm pain-free.) Of course,
I'm sure I will need a knee replacement one of these days.

Despite these misadventures, I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. John
Bingham and Jenny Hadfield have discovered the secret of attracting a
crowd of congenial people; about a hundred of them on this trip. The
camaraderie is enhanced by their practice of rotating the seating
assignments at dinner, so you sit with a different set of people
every evening and widen your acquaintanceship. I look forward to the
next repetition of this cruise; I presume I could avoid problems by
reducing my training volume before and after the trip.

I gained about five pounds on the cruise, despite the races. I
wonder what I would have gained if it weren't for the races.

is enough for me. After the last disastrous tri, I thought that I would never

Hi Daria great to hear from you, i sent you a PM a while back just
to let you know i got your card i hope you got it it was a really
lovely thought.

I am sorry to hear about your Mom but if it is the best place for
her health then it is the right thing, try not to let it affect you i
know easier said than done but i am sure your Mom and family need
you in the best of health so look after yourself.

Sounds like you have as busy a race schedule as usual, i marvel at
the amount of races yuo run, you must have a massive hauls of medals
and T Shirts by now.

Th efamily are doing great, Nicole is very much the chef and is
doing a lot of baking etc, ryan has taken up basketball and is
showing some real talent, he runs cross country to and plays soccer,
i am thinking about taking him out for a little run here and there
as he will be 10 in august.

My goal this year is to get back to the fitness i had in 2005 so
that means 3 minutes off my 10k.

I am desperate to run another Disney race, but for now will have to
be content running round property at DLP.

Take care

Col

Col, I too miss the chatter on this site.
I wouldn't be too quick to be awed by my achievement-----my total time
was 1:16:32. Swim was 9:33, bike was 31:26 (looking at the pictures
it looked like I was out for a leisurely Sunday bike ride---the
rolling hills KILLED) & run time was a disaster, 2miles in 29:12.
Really, I should
have done better but my legs were screaming NO NO! Oh well, there is
always my next tri in August-----remember how I said that I would
never run another marathon?---well, I said the same thing right after
the tri and her I sit, saying I'll give it one more try.

As for Disney races---in Sept. my son and I will be running Everest
Challenge---it's only a 5k but it sounds interesting. Then in Jan. I am
registered for the Goofy AND the 5K -----What is wrong with my head?
There is a new run in March---the Princess 1/2 ----so, I have to run
that.
I will taking my then 8 year old great niece and we will be running
the 5K the day before....she is truly a little princess but I am not
biased.

My grandson will be running our local Boilermaker 15K with me or
rather I should say ahead of me on July 13 and then we will running the
Virginia Beach 1/2 at he end of Sept and then it will be back to
school for him and cross country will start again.

We just had to put my mom in an nursing home and my heart is breaking.
I know that it is the best place for her but the quilt feelings are
doing a number on my health. If I thought my stress level was high
before....it's much higher now but I'm sure eventually I will come to
terms with
my decision....I have to.

How's your family doing----i am so bad with names Ryan (?) and I
should remember your daughter's name. What are they up to and how old
are they now?

Hey buddy, I hope to see you sometime soon....somewhere.

Glad to hear that you are still running but sorry to hear that you
still have those ITB issues.

Hey Daria

I am good, i am in awe of your acheivement, seriously, i cant siwm
any more than 25 meters so what you have don eis way beyond me well
done, you continue to inspire.

How is your grandsons running going are you still running some races
together. I thought about doing Disney Race for the Taste, but have
decided to go to Paris instead for purley monetary reasons.

Are you signe dup for any Disnay races ?

It is good to hear from you. I still check in here now and again to
see if anyone is around, it would be good if this group got busy
again, it was my favourite place to hang out on line.

I have managed to keep some consistancy in my schedule so far this
year, coming of a couple of quieter months but raring to go for a
summer of training hoping for sime good autumn results, ITB still
acts up but i can mange it more sensibly now.

Great to hear from you again.

Good Morning All,
Yesterday was my day, the day that I claimed the title of Triathlete

I tried and I DID IT.....thanks to all of your support. You had faith

As I came thru the finish line, I yelled, "THANK YOU" to the

I will write a complete race report..later...I need to get my
times...which are slow...I came in last in the swim, bike and run ( 6
law enforcement vehicles behind me) what a finish!

Me too.....I still need to register...and if I decide to run it, I
will be driving out because I need to leave my bike at my sons so that
I can use it for the Fleet Feet Super Sprint on Aug 23.
Oh, the days of taking freshmen to college....where did the time go?
My oldest grandson will be starting high school in the fall......I am

Thank you,

Yes I am hoping I can run soon. Right now with the swelling being so
bad and the throbbing I cannot imagine running. I am glad it was not
to any lower extremity. Think they have cool max casts?

I am hoping to run the Chicago Distance Classic in August. It depends
on when my son starts school at Indiana University where he will be a
freshman. Hate to miss taking him and all of his stuff to the dorm.
I am signed up for the full at Disney for January.

I would love to hear about the Minnie.

Ha! That sounds like my husband. He will gladly sit at home while I go to
Disney!

So he might be doing just that with one of our daughters while I take the
other 5-year-old to see Disney's The Little Mermaid on Broadway in August
(she WORSHIPS Ariel, so we are going to pay homage to her finny goddess) and
then probably take her for the weekend to the Princess Half at WDW next

Welcome back Peggy! What a way to start your training but at least it
wasn't a broken ankle where you would be sidelined for a long time.
What race did you register for or were you Goofy enough...like
me....to try for Goofy.
This group has been sorta quite for quite a long time and I am also to
blame. I should have posted my 5K and 15K report from the Minnie
Marathon weekend...perhaps in a few days. I have been busy training
for the NYCM and also am hoping to add "Triathlete" after my name...so
training has consumed all my free..what was left of it after I
attended to my 87 yo mother.
Since there are quite a few Disney races coming up, perhaps we will
see an increase in posts?????

So lets hear it----who's doing what. So, let me start:
9/20 Everest Challenge 5K
10/12 Race for the Taste (still debating..may be too much before
Marine Corps 10K and NYCM)
Jan 09 5K and Goofy Challenge
March 09 Princess 1/2
May 09 Danskin Triathalon

Who else?

Must be that time of year...

I took a spill doing a sprints about 3-1/2 weeks ago after my morning 8 miler.
Broke 2 fingers and just got the splits off. (Also took a couple layers of skin
off my shoulder, hands, knee, and side of my face.) It only stopped me from
running for a couple days, but it did throb and I cut my milage back. Yesterday
I ran 10 and had no issues - although I am very leary about slipping again,
since there is a constant dull pain (the swelling is still present).
Orthopedist said it will take 4-6 months to heal. I pray you heal quickly!!

I haven't signed up for Disney this year. After running the Gooy in January,
I'm thinking of trying another marathon; however, the family is putting on the
pressure..... I think they really like their Disney vacation!

   Hi,

I ran Disney in 2003 and 2004. I am happy to say I signed up for
2009. I have always said this group got me through the training for
   my first marathon!

ORN: Ran 3 yesterday while waiting for my son's soccer game to begin
(while out of town), tripped on a crack in sidewalk, gingerly ran the
rest of the way. 14 hours later had my swollen hand checked out,

I entered these two events on two successive weekends. The first of
these, the Great Atlanta Stair Climb, was on April 19th. This event
involved climbing the 55 stories of the Bank of America tower, the
tallest building in Atlanta. I entered it for the second time.

The event was sponsored by, and raised funds for, the American Lung
Association. It was extremely well organized. A volunteer was
placed on each floor to greet the climbers, question them as to their
progress and watch for anybody who was having trouble. Each
volunteer was equipped with a two-way radio to call the medics if
necessary. Two aid stations were set up, on the 18th and 37th
floors, where runners could get bottles of water and/or stop and rest
if necessary. Runners were started in 10 second intervals in the
order of the 5K times declared on their entry forms. Electronic
timing was used, with timing mats placed before the first step and
after the last.

When it was my turn to start I got going, using my hands on the
banister to keep my balance as well as to help pull me up. I found
the limiting factor in my performance was my wind; I got out of
breath very quickly and had to pause at every floor to catch my
breath. As a result, I finished in 31:44 (to be compared to the
winning time of 8:08). I was 5:43 faster than last year primarily
because I took fewer rest stops.

Age-group medals were not awarded; the race director said that
people's ages were not properly recorded due to a glitch in the
on-line registration process. However, the preliminary results
showed me as first and only in men 70 and over.

The Country Music Marathon was the following Saturday, one day after
my 77th birthday. On race day, I got into place, but as a result of
the wave start I wasn't able to get going until over an hour after
the gun. When i got to the marathon-half marathon split, the
marathon course had long been closed and I was diverted to the
half. Actually, my legs were trashed by then, so I finished the half
in a slow 3:45:45. Karen Bingham very kindly found a half-marathon
shirt for me to go with my half-marathon medal.

Besides delaying me, the wave start forced me to stand around for an
hour, not the best preparation for a long-distance walk. Therefore,
I don't think it makes sense for me to enter CMM again so long as the
wave start remains in effect.

While I'm in complaining mode, I want to say something about the
expo. The expo itself was fine, I'm complaining about the
venue. The Nashville Convention Center subjects us to heavy traffic
as well as scarce, inconvenient and expensive parking. I would hope
that Nashville has other venues that are easy to get to and have
ample parking. (How about the stadium?)

Only one running technique is observable science, mine. When the top of the
leg swings to the vertical position it is moving by momentum while slowing
down. When the top of the leg passes the vertical position it is sped up by
gravity. The slowdown and speedup gives you an even pace. To read more and see
videos of how changing the landing spot is the only thing that makes you
faster. Go to _www.runningtechnique.net_ (http://www.runningtechnique.net/)
This
is a content site, nothing to buy.

This took place on Sunday, March 30, but I haven't gotten around to
writing it up before now. Better late than never, I hope.

My experience started with a visit to the expo the preceding Friday
to pick up my packet. The most noteworthy thing I found was a pair
of Spira shoes in my size 14, which I tried on and immediately bought
for $90. These shoes, which were invented by a friend of mine,
feature a wave spring in the heel and two smaller ones in the
forefoot. The purpose is to absorb the shock of landing and return
the energy on push-off. They felt so good that I decided to break
the primary rule of marathoning and use them immediately in the marathon.

(These shoes are technically illegal by USATF rules, but I figured
that, as a slowpoke, nobody was going to check my shoes. The
manufacturer filed a lawsuit against USATF for restraint of trade,
but USATF claimed they weren't checking shoes, so the manufacturer
dropped the lawsuit. For more information, look at the
manufacturer's website <http://www. spirafootwear.com>, which
mentions a number of elite marathoners who have used them to good
profit. I'm sure my arthritic knee will appreciate the shock absorption.)

Sunday morning I took MARTA to the start-finish area at Centennial
Olympic Park and started making my way to my assigned corral, the
last one, number 7. There was a total traffic jam of human bodies,
so I made it only back to corral 4. A friendly voice said "You're OK
where you're at" which was fine with me.

At the start I got going, with everybody passing me of course. This
kept up until, just past mile 14, they were starting to pull up the
cones and close down the course. I thought I had had it and would
have to accept a DNF, get on a bus and return home with my tail
between my legs. At that point, a young woman on a bicycle, wearing
a volunteer badge, asked me if I would like to have her guide me to
the finish. This was an offer I couldn't refuse, so we started off,
with me on the sidewalks and the woman, her colleagues also on bikes
and a MARTA bus serving as a sag wagon following me on the
streets. My little entourage and I proceeded smoothly to the finish,
in 7:52:45, where a medal was hung around my neck.

Obviously I was extremely grateful for this service, and immediately
sent an appreciative e-mail to the official race web site. I have
never encountered an accommodation of that sort before. It
definitely inclines me to enter this race again next year.

In the meantime, I have been enjoying my Spira shoes.
