Hi Robyn;
I only went on the first year. It's quite a different experience from the
marathons/half-marathons at WDW because the route is different and it's at
night. Unless they've changed it a lot, they also don't have quite the same
budget as the marathons, so things are scaled back a bit. If you're going to
do the fun run as part of an overall fun visit to the parks you'll have a
good time.
Regarding visiting the parks solo, that happens more often than you think!
It's a relatively common topic that gets asked over at the MousePad forums
at MousePlanet. I've done a search for all Disney theme park queries
regarding solo travel (
http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/search.php?searchid=1015767) and you might
want to peruse that for some good tips. The most important thing to remember
is that you can have a total blast on a solo park visit. There are some
rides like Space Mountain where being by yourself is a real benefit (when
they are operating single-rider queues). You can get up when you want, go to
whatever attraction you want, eat what you want, when you want. If you are
the type to feel a little lonely, you can create a little project to work on
while there, such as taking your picture with as many characters as you can
find, getting as many pressed pennies as you can find (there are actual
lists online so you can use them as a checklist), taking a nice camera for
some photography, taking a sketchbook and just sit in a nice quiet spot and
actually paint or draw in the parks, or trying to find the best souvenirs
for all your friends and family back home.
I've done some solo trips to Disneyland, and the one thing that always
strikes me is that other people, when they see you alone, find it easier to
strike up a conversation. I've met some really nice people and had some very
pleasant conversations waiting in ride queues this way.
Enjoy!
