Re: Shoes, gear, 2007 and salt

Col,

Not much going on here in STEAMY Houston. I have been caught up in a
couple conventions where the expectation is to crawl out of the bar
every night. Thank goodness for bartenders who will serve water
dressed up as a drink for the "designated driver". Still, a lot of
setting and big meals so the weight crept up a couple pounds.

I am struggling through the heat (heat indexes up to 110F). Running
has been a little slow this summer. Since I was basically off for 12
months, the pounding has taken a while for the shins to accept. I
still tank at least a run a week.

I am shoe shopping myself. I am using a model of Asics Kyanos that
come from the late 1990's. My supplier is out of my size and is not
sure when he will get a supply in. Therefore, I am looking at
current year models again. I agree that this is the most miserable
thing to do. I am never sure that the $$ spent will be worth it as I
am real picky on feel and never know how a shoe will feel until
the "new shoe smell" wears out. I need a pair in about 6 weeks at my
current and expected mileage.

Salt intake.. Hyponatremia, dehydration, plain water, sports drink -
with or without potassium???????? It's really confusing out there.
I attempt to balance weight before and after a run to assure that I
take on the proper amount of fluid. I sweat at the extreme side of
normal range (I lose about 500 ml in a 40 minute intense summer time
run or biking event). Salt intake seems to be a matter of personal
physiology. Gatorade has a fairly scientific based site on the
subject of hydration. I know they are attempting to sell product,
but it seems to be the most comprehensive site out there. Here is the
