hey mark, thanks.  btw, can you post this?

On March 19, Gene & Minah Oh of Alameda Bicycle welcomed their son Marley into the world.  Gene's gonna be taking a bit of time off from the sales floor to be with his son, but he'll gladly accept any miles on the bike you wish to donate to him.

isn't he a cutie?

Play in the Vomitron Bowl

'Tis the season for college football bowl games. When the weather is dismal outside, it's tempting to assume the horizontal position on the couch, snack tray in easy reach, and let the players get all the exercise.

Why not join them?

Simply set your trainer in front of the TV and let the rhythm of the game dictate your intensity. It's a fun way to get an effective workout. And unlike during most indoor rides, the hands on the clock will move at normal speed.

The basic idea is to go hard when the players do. Pedal easily while the team huddles, then sprint each time the ball is snapped. Typically, it'll be 3-6 seconds till the play is whistled dead. Not much, but when these sprints accumulate for an entire half, it's a great workout.

Make it more challenging by pedaling at time trial speed during every commercial. This is brutal because commercial breaks last 2-3 minutes and there are lots of them. Maybe go hard every other commercial during blocks that contain several.

Feel free to invent variations. Start your sprint when the team comes to the line rather than when the ball is snapped. Go extra hard on kickoffs and punts. Do a time trial during play challenges while officials are deciding if they blew the call.

A half usually lasts a bit more than an hour. You'll have had a terrific workout by then. Get your shower while the bands are playing at halftime, then have that snack and assume a supine position for the remainder of the game.

One thing's certain about the final score: The winner is you!

Howdy everyone, and Happy Holidays!!!

I posted this on the TA forums, but am also sending this thru Yahoo in order to reach more eyes!

I have registered for the AIDS/Lifecycle 7! 545 miles, 7 days, San Francisco to Los Angeles...So I'm here to ask all my fellow Team Alamedans for their support...to DONATE toward my fundraising goal!!!

I'm sure most of you know what AIDS/Lifecycle is, and what it's about, but if you don't, AIDS/Lifecycle raises funds for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Their purpose is to help people living with HIV and AIDS to gain access to care, treatment and housing, as well as reducing the spread of HIV with a roster of prevention services. Every year this ride helps to fund these necessary services that bring much-needed help to those people suffering from HIV and AIDS.

If you can, please donate! Your generosity is appreciated!

For online donations (EASY!) make your donation at my personal AIDS/Lifecycle webpage: http://www.aidslifecycle.org/2357
Or if you'd like to donate with a check, you can ask me for a donation form at the weekend TA rides, or email me with your mailing address and I'd be happy to mail one to you.

AND...Just in time for the end of 2007...Your donation is tax-deductible so donate today and WRITE IT OFF!! Woo hoo!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

:-)

Since I do not have enough time for Brian's alternate medium leisurely
nor the legs and drivetrain for Jim's short hilly extra climb, and
that I have seen nothing else advertised, I was wondering if some
would be interested in a "medium decaf not so leisurely" ride, between
35-45 mi. tomorrow morning. I assume that if there were many people
interested we would need a "certified ride leader" to make the thing
kosher.
I would imagine something like Wildwood/Butters/Skyline/Grizzly going
down by either Claremont, Centennial, Euclid, or Spruce depending of
one's time constraints.

Let me know if there is any interest.

By the way, that's close to the same mileage I put on my car this year. :-)
Now all I have to do is make the bike miles the larger number.......

Like anything else in our hectic lives, we have to plan for play as well
as work. I block out my winter workouts (4pm on Tuesday and Friday) on
my work calendar and treat them as any other meeting I would attend.
And, committing to lead rides gets you and keeps you on the hook to show
up and RIDE.

I committed over 5 years ago to lead my ACTC after-work rides down in
Saratoga during daylight saving time, and those twice-a-week rides are
also on my work calendar, and I have a dozen or more people counting on
me to be there, and as a result, I am there.

Well, it sounds like everyone is stepping up to shoot for increasing their mileage next year, and with 19 active users of BikeJournal, we just went over 60,000 miles for the year!  So, when I can set 2008 goals on the site, I will shoot for 75,000 miles for the club next year, which means we'll all have to keep to those commitments, and draft some more club members in to using this website to log their rides.

I will probably come in a little under 4,500 miles this year, pretty much on par for what I have done the last couple of years, but if I shoot for any more mileage than that next year, my lovely wife might shoot me.

Hey John,

How about signing up for the AIDS ride in 2008?  It is a great way to do a century on two of the days and to get 545 miles of riding in a week.  Plus, you will meet some great people and see some hidden places in California on the way to LA.

Are you and Z-rider up for the challenge??

I didn't have a goal that I kept in mind for this year. I had a non-
numerical goal to improve on my riding and to enjoy the rides as they
came. That happened and by using BikeJournal I seem to have passed
2,000 miles for the year. So why not 3,000 next year? I especially
would like to do a bike trip of over, say, 300 miles. We will see.

If you've been on the road enough, then you've seen or been part of a
close call or actual collision. I distinctly remember 2 years ago when
a driver made a left turn near the canyon school in front of our group
on Pinehurst. I was 3rd rider back and had a very good view of Greg,
in the lead, making a panic stop. I slammed on my brakes so hard that
the rider behind me ran into my rear cassette (I can still see where
he hit, it's always a little cleaner). Thankfully all that came from
it was some rubber on the road and a significant amount of yelling
from Greg (good for him).

I bring all of this up because I just read this heart breaking article
about bicycle/car crashes in nearby Sonoma county. I haven't figured
out yet what I want to do, but it makes me want to do SOMETHING.

This is in the Jan/Feb issue of bicycling:
http://www.bicycling.com/article/1,6610,s1-3-12-16637-1,00.html

How to change cycling laws:
http://www.bicycling.com/article/1,6610,s-3-12-16639-1,00.html

There are plenty of advocacy groups in our own backyard:
http://www.ebbc.org/
http://www.bikealameda.org/

Please everyone be careful out there, both on the bike and in your car.

Mark,

I’m really impressed with the mileage numbers that are being reported as goals --- where do you all find the time?  Last year my goal was 2000 miles and I didn’t even get close.  Too many obstacles!  So, I’m going for 2500 miles in ’08 and will just have to clear my calendar.

See you out there -----

Well my goal at 5000 miles for this year thinking that was high from the beginning.  Today I have 4740, and may have to reach into my daily to-and-from BART miles to get there, I haven’t been tracking of them but I think it would be fair to guestimate based on the number of days I’ve ridden to BART.

Next year I’ll start with a goal of 6000 miles and see what the new year brings.  I’d like to do a couple more organized centuries and maybe a couple of other big rides.

The possibilities are endless.

Subject: [teamalameda] Bike Journal Members: let me know what mileage goal to set next year.

As the Bike Journal team admin, I get to set the mileage goal for the team for next year.  I originally set it at 40,000 miles, but as more team members started joining this site and logging their rides, I bumped it up to 50,000, but it looks like we'll end up around 59 - 60K by year end.

I am thinking about setting it at 60,000 miles next year, just to stay ahead of that "Manly" team from Texas...

Any other suggestions?

40% of all urban trips in the U.S. are two miles or less; 90% of those trips are made by car; and 60% of car-caused pollution occurs in the first few minutes of use. Hence,  Forget the Buick and get on a bicycle.

I'll shoot for 3600 next year as a goal and maybe push myself to 4000.

Sounds reasonable  - I am going to set my goal at 4,000. Am trying to hit 1,500 k before year end.

I plan on logging all my riding (road and mtb) and have set a personal goal of  4000 miles for next year so please make that 20 pedal pushers.  :)

Everyone:  Here's the workouts we did today out on Harbor Bay and Ron Cowan Parkways.

Super 8’s Workout:

Caveats:

  • This is a strenuous workout, so do this NO MORE than twice a week and never on consecutive days, and make sure your doctor OK’s you for a strenuous workout,
  • If you don’t feel comfortable “jumping” to start your sprint interval, simply spin at a higher cadence against a harder gear to get your heart rate up during the On interval,
  • Just before beginning your “On” interval, shift up one or two gears harder (smaller cogs on your rear cassette) so you don’t spin out during your On interval.

Warm up.

  • Ten minutes (at least) of easy pedaling from home to the start of the course,
  • Begin at a stop at the corner of Harbor Bay Parkway and Doolittle
  • Clip in then start at a slow roll, then jump out of the saddle and go at maximum effort for the first interval.

Next, go through eight total intervals in the following pattern:

·         30 seconds at maximum effort—jump to start the interval and sprint out of the saddle as long as you can and maintain your speed through the “On” interval,

·         90 seconds for your recovery interval (Off interval)—shift to an easier gear or two and spin your legs to recover and flush the lactic acid from your muscles,

·         Then jump to the next interval and continue the 30 On/90 Off for a total of eight intervals as you continue heading out Harbor Bay Parkway towards the ferry parking lot,

·         WATCH FOR THE SIGNAL AT MAITLAND—be careful because it changes instantly as a car pulls in to the left turn lane,

·         U-turn at the end of Harbor Bay Parkway before it turns in to the ferry parking lot and continue your intervals the opposite direction on Harbor Bay Parkway, then continue on to Ron Cowan Parkway toward the airport until you complete your eight and final On interval.

·         Spin in an easy gear as you continue out Ron Cowan Parkway after the final interval, then make the left turn on to the airport access road and head to Doolittle.

·         Turn left on to Doolittle and do an easy spin (or tempo ride) back on Doolittle back to Alameda and home.

Variations:

  • As you get in better shape, increase the “On” interval to 60, then 90, then 120 seconds.  My pattern is to do the 30 seconds in December, go to 60 seconds in January, 90 seconds in February, then at 120 seconds in March.  BUT, always have your recovery interval equal to or greater than your “on” interval (i.e., if your “On” interval is 120 seconds, your recovery interval should be 120 seconds or more).

Time Trialing on Harbor Bay Parkway

Caveats:

  • This is a strenuous workout, so do this NO MORE than twice a week and never on consecutive days, and make sure your doctor OK’s you for a strenuous workout,
  • Track your times at the start of each month in the off-season, then compare your times once a month against that first time: you should be able to lower your time, increase you average speed, and/or decrease your average heart rate as you continue your workouts through the off-season.

Warm up.

  • Ten minutes (at least) of easy pedaling from home to the start of the course,
  • Begin at a stop at the corner of Harbor Bay Parkway and Doolittle—from the small “No Parking” sign just down from Doolittle, it is 3.2 miles to the “Dog” sign at the end of the ferry parking lot access road off the end of Harbor Bay Parkway, and if you continue through the parking lot and head back out to Harbor Bay Parkway and continue on Ron Cowan Parkway to the airport access road, it is 6.65 miles to the “cones” at the parking lot exit just before the light as Ron Cowan Parkway ends.
  • Clip in then start at a slow roll, then jump out of the saddle and go as fast as you can maintain for either 3.2 miles, or 6.65 miles.

Next, go as hard as you can maintain during the time trial.

·         Remember, normal headwinds blow off the bay and in to your face as you go past the golf course and get in to the business park.  Meter your effort so you can handle the increasing force of the headwinds as you get past the first mile/mile-and-a-half.

·         WATCH FOR THE SIGNAL AT MAITLAND—be careful because it changes instantly as a car pulls in to the left turn lane,

·         If you are doing the 3.2 mile Time Trial, your effort ends at the end of the access road just before you enter the ferry parking lot.  If you are doing the 6.65 miles, roll through the lot (BEING CAREFUL TO AVOID CARS AND BUSSES IN THE PARKING LOT) and go around the round-about at the entrance and head back out to Harbor Bay Parkway and continue on to Ron Cowan Parkway toward the airport until you get to the finish line at the cones.

·         Spin in an easy gear as you continue out Ron Cowan Parkway after the time trial, then make the left turn on to the airport access road and head to Doolittle.

·         Turn left on to Doolittle and do an easy spin (or tempo ride) back on Doolittle back to Alameda and home.

With my reduction in training miles and long rides, I am starting to focus on short, intense training out on Harbor Bay. Featuring a wide, and largely quiet traffic-free road--although rather chewed up--I focus on sprint intervals and time trial intensity rides in 13 to 17 mile loops from my house, getting them done in a little over an hour. I work from home on Tuesdays and Fridays, and usually get out no later than 4pm (sunset is 4:50 nowadays).

For those who are interested, I will lead a ride from Peets out to Harbor Bay Parkway this Sunday and go through my specific workouts which may help you keep your base cycling fitness through the winter and be ready for the coming cycling season. All levels are invited to participate, because anyone can do these intervals, regardless of fitness, and require only basic cycling skills. You don't have to write anything down; I will send out the workouts after the fact for those that are interested.

There are only 3 streetlights in a 6.5 mile time trial course I have (starting at Doolittle, going out Harbor Bay Parkway to the ferry parking lot, then back out along HBP and on Ron Cowan Parkway to the airport access road). We will do one lap of "Super Eights" and then talk about tempo riding and other training techniques as we do another lap at time-trial intensity.

It would be ideal to have a heart-rate monitor for this ride, but anything with a digital timer will do to start.

From this Sunday session, others could continue the theme and work on beginning pacelining and other more advanced skills in subsequent weeks.

I just can't find the time to get in to the hills I love in the winter, so these workouts fill in nicely for me.

See you Sunday!

Ride Report: World AIDS Day Morgan Hill Ride - Specialized Riders Club blog

The temperatures near freezing at 7:30am on Saturday morning might have scared away many, but not the 12 of us who arrived at the Specialized Corporate Headquarters to commemorate the 27 years of the AIDS pandemic on Saturday 01DEC07, World AIDS Day.

I was positively frozen even before the ride started and I was wearing two base layers with arm warmers, two set of knee warmers, ear bags, neoprene shoe covers and deflect gloves.  I decided to brew a couple of pots of hot coffee to clutch and warm our hands and innards as we gathered in the Specialized lobby to introduce ourselves, go over ride logistics and hold our moment of silence to reflect on why we had gathered that day. I was in elementary school when we lost David, a family friend to AIDS.  Years later into adulthood I came to learn that my mother's only brother, my uncle and godfather, who died from unrelated causes very young in the early eighties was probably one of the first undiagnosed cases of what was then being called "Gay Cancer."  HIV/AIDS activism and service has been a part of who I am since I was a child.  Organizing this simple ride was such a small thing that I could do in the fight against this horrible disease.

We set out in tight formation through the neighborhood and kept a fairly close pack for the first 10 miles or so.  Then people split away for various pit stops, regrouping at various intersections along our beautiful course.  I must say that despite the frigid temperatures, the day was crystal clear and glorious and made the ride very worthwhile.  I enjoyed the conversation and the scenery at our contemplative pace.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera to document the ride.  Fortunately, the other rides were more prepared so here are some cross-links to pictures from World AIDS Day rides elsewhere:

pictures from the San Francisco ride: link link2 link3
pictures from the Los Angeles ride: link
pictures from the Fremont/Newark ride: link  link2

Thank you riders for raising awareness through riding!

Yours until the Victory Ride,
Michelle

I just uploaded a gear inch calculator. I have used it for some time
and don't remeber where I found it. You can just plug in your chainring
and cassette numbers and it gives your gear inches based on your wheel
size.

Below that, I have a calculator that inputs the gear inches you
just obtained, and allows you to select a cadence and outputs MPH for
that gearset and cadence combo.

All in one. Please let me know if my
math is off or any other problems found with it and I will rectify or
remove it.

Cheers,

Bassey
