Gene Oh, owner of Alameda Bicycle, would like to invite Team Alameda members,
friends, relatives, neighbors and everyone you know to help our local Alameda
schools. As part of Alameda Bicycle's 40th Anniversary party, Gene is going to
donate all of the store's profits from all store sales on Friday, October 23,
2009 to the PTA Council. So stop by and stock up on spare tubes, tires, lights,
or a new bike and support our Alameda students. With the holidays approaching,
now is the time to think about "laying away" that surprise new bike for your
spouse and know that you are helping further education on the island city.

Featured events include a BBQ fundraiser from 4 - 6 PM and a stunt show
featuring Giant's own Jeff Lenosky at 4:30 PM. Jeff provided a spectacular stunt
show for Alameda Bicycle's 20th anniversary party (was that only three years
ago?) and he is coming back with even bigger tricks to wow us. There will even
be an inflatable jumper set up to entertain the kids! So spread the word and let
everyone know that Alameda Bicycle is the place to be next Friday (shop is open
from 10 AM - 8 PM) and help support the Alameda Unified School District.

Saturday, October 24, after the Team Alameda rides, stop by and participate in
the Korean BBQ fundraiser from 12 PM - 2PM. Beer will also be available to those
who are over 21 years old. There will be an encore stunt performance by Jeff
Lenosky at high noon and tons of giveaways. And, a free pair of sunglasses for
every adult bicycle purchased. What a deal!! So come down to Alameda Bicycle on
both days and help the Alameda schools get grants to assist with education and
enjoy some great food and entertainment courtesy of Alameda Bicycle!

Members, spouses and children are all invited to the Team Alameda 2009
Membership party and BBQ! The fun and festivities begin at 1pm, at the same
location as previous years, Lincoln Park in the park's building near the
swimming pool.

As in years past, TA will provide hot dogs and hamburgers, beverages and the
fixin's.

Salads & dessert will be potluck, so create and bring your favorite salad or
dessert to share!

Volunteers are needed for grilling help and prep (chopping vegetables for burger
condiments, etc), and cleanup. If you can volunteer, please post here or contact
Gwyn. (see "contact" page of the site).

In addition to hanging out with your cycling buddies sans spandex, (and playing
the "Gosh, I don't recognize you without your helmet" game), you can preview the
new Team Alameda jersey design, and participate in the election process for the
coming year's open Board of Directors positions.

A good time is guaranteed, *and* there's time to get in a ride beforehand!

See you there!

If you can find Anthony's name look for Ron and Teri Arth :) I'll be riding 100 miles and even more impressive Teri will attempt 50 miles. Both of my daughters are signed up to volunteer making this a family event for us. I did this ride last year and what really make this so awesome is the cause and what they do for these kids. So if you're unable to join us on the ride please support Anthony, myself or any other Team Alameda riders that will be out that day. Thank you.

Road camp is: June 5,
Mountain camps are: July 10 & August 14

Giant For Women is offering three different "Ride & Retreat" cycling camps this summer at Northstar near Lake Tahoe.

June 5th is the first of the three, a road biking camp, and is recommended for experienced riders.

The July 10th and August 14th camps are mountain biking camps, and are open to beginners and intermediate riders.

The retreat is a women-only cycling-centric weekend. Wake up to morning yoga, spend the day riding and learning with the instructors, Olympic road veteran Mari Holden or mountain bike champion Tara Llanes. And you can take in the sights of Lake Tahoe's grand vistas with other like-minded bikey-type women!

Registration for the event is available at active.com

Polar has found that the Duracell battery seems to drain much faster which causes the malfunction.  The Sony battery holds it’s life much longer.

Thanks for the info: I did not realize the Energizer was a 1.5V battery.  I thought all 2025 batteries were the same as part of a standard.

I see the DuraCell CR2032 and 2025 are 3V batteries, and are more widely available around here than Sony (I've never seen a Sony battery in a display).  Is there something special about the Sony, or it's just that you need a 3V coin battery rather than a 1.5V?

The energizer battery has been found to not have enough strong enough voltage.  Polar only recommends that a sony battery be used.

Just got my S725X back...Thanks for the prompt shipping!

One question: on the repair notes, I think it says: Energizer in tx--can cause malfunction.  Looking in the manual and searching on-line, I can't see where anything is specified for that transmitter battery other than it's a CR2025 battery.  If the Energizer is unacceptable, what kind of battery is?

I would like to alter my Tu/Th posting--I will be leading rides down in the South Bay for ACTC starting Monday coincident with daylight saving time's start, and those rides tend to be hammerfests that ought to do a good job of tuckering me out, so will not be doing the usual Sprint Intervals, but more like a easy recovery ride for me.  Others joining me can do whatever workout they wish, and we usually regroup at the end of Ron Cowan Parkway at the airport where we work on paceline technique coming back in to the usually ferocious headwinds on Doolittle.  So, if you can keep the listing, but move it back an hour to start at 5pm for an hour loop from Peet's out to Harbor Bay Parkway/Ron Cowan Parkway to the airport access road and return back to the Big Island.

So the listing should state: Tu/Th one hour workout rides, be at Peets at 5pm.

Team:

What a wildly successful year!  Twentieth Place among clubs (and there are some nation- and state-wide clubs so it's an apples to oranges kind of comparioson, so we really did much better against purely local clubs); 121,159 miles with an averag of 3,107 miles per member with 52 members (and unfortunately a lot of non-reporting members who I know logged some big miles last year)!

So successful, I've set the bar higher (isn't that always the case with life, that once you do good, you are expected to do better the next year...), setting a target of 150,000 miles for the Team in 2009.  So keep logging your miles on www.bikejournal.com, and take advantage of the component tracking features so the tool can track your tire and chain mileage as well as your workouts.  It's important to track your chain mileage, since a worn chain can chew up your cassette and crank teeth and cost you a whole lot more than a new chain...a good rule of thumb is to lube your chain every 200 miles or so (in dry weather, do more often if you ride in the rain), and look to replace your chain every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, depending on what a $10 tool called the Park Chain Checker (tool CC-3) tells you.

Anyone interested in going to Mt. Tam for a mountain bike ride on
12/21. Start from Ross, up Eldrige and return. If Shaver grade is
open, we could add that in for a little more mileage.

Early start from Alameda, return sometime around noon unless lunch is
thrown in.

Unfortunately I am out for Mt Hammie.  Been fighting a cold since last Saturday and traveling back to Buffalo, NY for a funeral the past 3 days hasn't helped with my getting better. Have a great ride.

Brian, count me out for Saturday's ride as well.

Subject: [teamalameda] Last Call for Mt. Hamilton Car Pools

Everyone:

I am coordinating the "D" rider car pools for Thursday's Mt. Hamilton climb/time trial.  I believe my truck just got taken out of circulation because I have a 455 pound pellet stove sitting in the truck, and few prospects of getting the beast out by Thursday morning.  So, I have the following "D" rider folks offering to drive:
  • Brian (full of riders and bikes)
  • DRDan: plus 1 rider
  • Pedro: plus 1 rider
  • Tim: plus 1 rider
  • Ramiro: not sure how many bikes/riders
So far, the only other riders I have (not driving) are Anthony D and Ron, so we'll have to distribute the three of us in the 4 remaining cars.  Ron has some time constraints, so he should be in a "faster riders" car.  I haven't heard if Warren is joining us.

Consider this as the last call for any other riders.  IF YOU PLAN ON SHOWING UP AT PEET'S AT 7AM THURSDAY MORNING AND TAGGING ALONG WITHOUT HAVING PREVIOUSLY NOTIFIED ME OF YOUR NEED FOR A RIDE, WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE YOU.  PLEASE E-MAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE "D" RIDE AND YOU EITHER NEED A RIDE, OR ARE OFFERING UP YOUR CAR/TRUCK/VAN/ SUV FOR CARPOOLING WITH OTHERS.

Zoraida is coordinating the "B" pace and half-Hammie riders, so contact her if you wish to do the "B" ride.

Hammie is two distinct climbs, with a 10 mile first segment, then a short downhill to Grant County Park (turn around for the half-Hammies), then a final 9 mile or so climb.  There are no killer sections...it's all a pretty steady 6 - 8% grade, but the length just wears you down.  If your lower back tires while climbing, the last 5 miles can be a real grind, but if you do enough standing periods, you should be OK.

I've not broken 2 hours for the climb (2:01.14 is my best), so I hope to on Thursday.  Spending Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Manhattan pigging out probably ain't going to help me reach that goal, but it is a goal nonetheless.

Mt Hamilton weather on weather.com shows a 46 - 59 range for Thursday with partly cloudy skies...it will be warmer than past years...

Just be ready for a VERY COLD downhill, regardless of the weather...18.7 miles up means 18.7 miles down, so people get really sweaty-wet on the climb, then freeze their asses on the way down because they didn't plan the descent out well.  It doesn't look like it will be very cold on Thursday, but layer anyway, since the descent is LONG.  I will probably wear a long sleeved jersey and knickers for the climb, and have a windbreaker, arm warmers, and a fresh, DRY set of full-finger gloves ready for the descent--I have some Windstopper ones picked out specifically for this descent.

People have reported the most misery with cold hands on the descent in previous years, so plan accordingly.

The descent, particularly from the observatory on down to the bridge, is very technical (Wikipedia says Hamilton's road has a years' worth of turns--somebody counted 365 turns from bottom to top) and there are some tight, right hand turns that perpetually have gravel in them, so scan the road and take a mental note of the bad turn sections as you climb and remember those sections as you descend to them, and for God's sake, slow down and be careful!

There is water, a bathroom, and a vending machine at the Lick Observatory at the summit, but no nice little snack bar or anything, so take enough bars/gels to sustain you both up and back.  General rule is 2 hours plus to climb; 1 hour to descend.

The medium ride next Saturday will be a friendly jaunt up Mt. Diablo from the Danville side.  It will be lead by me with help from other experienced ride leaders.  We will meet at 8 AM at the Kaiser steps, as usual, and then split up into various cars for the drive over to the Peet's in Danville.

The ride will have SAG support in the form of Ted Fuller so those of you who have never climbed Mt. Diablo might want to consider it. We will be riding at a "B" pace and will have regrouping points along the way.

Please RSVP to gwyn.kanekofuller@... and let me know if you can drive and how many bikes you can take OR if you need a ride.  There will be refreshments at the top before we make our way back down.  Total mileage is about 30 miles.  The ride sheet, courtesy of Brian Aldrich is attached.

The weather should be okay but of course, wet pavement cancels the ride!  Let's hope for sunshine and no wind that day.

See you then,
