I could help out with coaching swimming techniques if the date works out. I am trying to plan an August wedding and it is keeping me really busy.

Hi all,
It’s time to start planning the spring camp (OK, it’s probably past time, but this is when it _is_
starting). For those who are unfamiliar, this event is a central part of TC Tri, and has helped a lot of people get started in triathlon over the years. It’s aimed at new or relatively inexperienced triathletes, though all are welcome. We do a one-day crash course which includes a lot of instruction and (typically) a coached swim session. In the past, the event has been free to members. As we’re looking at membership being free from now on, there will be a fee this year to cover our costs in producing the camp ($25 or $30). Experienced folks who are helping out are, of course, not charged.
I need to know how many people are interested in attending, to get an idea of what I have to
get together for the camp to run well. So, if you’d like to attend, please respond either on or off list to let me know.
We need to select a date as well. Sundays make our facilities issues easiest, so the options out there are April 22, April 29, May 6 or May 13. If anyone has any strong preference for or against any of those (and you’re interested in attending), let me know what dates work best for you. I’ll do my best to accommodate the greatest number of attendees.
We also need to start discussing the syllabus for the day, as there are a lot of topics we could cover – many more than there is time to address. If you have particular requests, let me know. Otherwise, as the schedule firms up, I’ll start floating possibilities to the group.
Thanks, everyone. I look forward to hearing what interests you this year.

Hi Greg, Rich and TCTRI-ers,
What's not to like about a free club? Not sure if I'll do a real
tri this year, and I'm fairly certain I won't have any more time for the club
than I did last year, but I'll probably keep wearing the shirt.
I'm trying to get ready for a trip to Moab, UT and Fruita, CO (Fat Tire
Festival) at the end of April. Check out the enclosed video link (if it
doesn't work, search for "extreme cfo" on youtube) for how I
train on stairs indoors. I'm mainly concerned about the uphills out West
though.....
I agree with the proposed new direction for the club: No fee, minimal
organized activities, informal forum, etc.
I will not likely be able to participate in the Spring clinic due to a
potential real estate move this Spring. Please keep me on the copy
list, however, in the event that things change.
Thanks!!

P.S. I talked to a fellow TCTRI member this past weekend at Lifetime
Fitness. He was sporting the black club shirt and we chatted before a spin
class. He name is Tim; he joined last year and did some off-road endurance
events. It's interesting to find TCTRI people around the Metro.

Hi Rich,
I would like to help out with the camp. I could talk
about several topics, whichever you need.
Possibilities include swim technique and race tactics,
transition tips, running technique and tactics, or a
combination of all of these things in just a general
info session. Do you have a swim techniques
instructor?
In the past we have had a race official talk and that
was helpful. I am sure we could get him again.
Ingrid also likes talking in front of groups. Let me
know if you want me to twist her arm to get her to
come.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your work on the club. I really like your
ideas here. I would like to help out with the camp.
Let me know what I could do or what you need. The 8K
race in Blaine is on a great new course. We have a
sponsor who is giving $1000 to make this race take
off. It will give our club great exposure and the
proceeds will benefit the Alexandra House in Blaine.

I just got a press release from the folks who run the High
Cliff Tri, on Lake Winnebago in eastern WI. Dick
Hoyt will be attending, presenting, & speaking at the High Cliff Tri the
weekend of June 23 this year.
High Cliff is a nice race (I did it during its first year)
offering a 1/2IM an sprint distance event. They’re very good at bringing
in high profile Triathlon personalities to speak the night before the race. It’s
a nice opportunity to get to hear one of the iconic figures in the sport. If,
for some reason, you’re involved in triathlon and don’t know who
Dick (and his son Rick) Hoyt are, you should. They’re two of the people
that make tri such a great place to be. Check them out at http://www.teamhoyt.com/
I think this makes a lot of sense. As a
foot note, we should know where the club tent is. I like the uniform, and
would like the club to continue.

and planning update
Hi all,
I know
things have been quite for a while, but with spring in the air (it was actually
above freezing when I got out of bed!), I figured some info was in order.
I got
responses from a number of folks to my December questionnaire about what club
activities folks are interested in. The responses were a little
surprising, but very helpful in figuring out what the club is going to try to
be this year.
Last season,
I think we tried to do too many things, and ended up with what I saw as an
annoying level of “OK, who wants to do this?” messages going out
too frequently. This season, I think for big club activities, we’re
going to be better off focusing on a small number of things. Right now,
my thoughts are:
1)The spring
camp for new(ish) triathletes, some time in late April or early May
2)Support for
the Blaine Blazing 8k on 4th of July weekend (sorry, Dan, if I
butchered the name)
This first
of these is what has brought most people into the club, is a lot of fun to do,
and I think is a very valuable event. The second is a pretty amazing race
that one of the club’s founders, Dan Hauck, has been producing for the
past few years, and has been growing by leaps and bounds.
I’m
also thinking, as the club changes, that a significant change in the membership
structure is in order (based on both my experience with the club and your
responses to the questionnaire). Our dues have been going up for
some time now, as we kept trying to do more and more, but the level of service
the members got wasn’t going up in line with the dues (as I saw things,
anyway). So I’ve been considering the idea of converting the club
to a free, opt-in organization. You want to be a member, sign up on the
list and you’re in. There may be a form or two that a sponsor
requires, and I’ll have to move our waiver of liability to the list
subscription, but it really streamlines things.
The benefits
of membership, then, are access to whatever sponsorship programs exist (still
working on those for ’07) and communication with the club – email,
public calendar, and a forum for likeminded folks of varying experience levels
to bond with, bounce ideas off of, find training partners, etc. Club swag
(t-shirts, singlets, swim caps, etc.) would be available for purchase, and may
or may not be required for any particular sponsor’s program (again, still
working on it, but, for example, Erik’s required you to race in the TC
Tri/Erik’s singlet for discounts last season). That allows each
member to set their own level of involvement, their own level of cost ($0 to as
high as you want to go), and the level of camaraderie they desire.
The camp,
then, instead of being free to members, would have a cost associated with it
(as it costs some money to produce), but it sticks with the self-selecting mode
that seems pretty attractive.
So, my
questions are:
1)Are these
two events things that people are interested in seeing supported? Who
would come to the camp? Who might volunteer for the race?
2)Is this
membership/fee model attractive to you?
3)Is there any
particular program or sponsor availability that would put you over the edge
(either for or against) the club?
I know things have been quite for a while, but with spring
in the air (it was actually above freezing when I got out of bed!), I figured
some info was in order.
I got responses from a number of folks to my December
questionnaire about what club activities folks are interested in. The
responses were a little surprising, but very helpful in figuring out what the
club is going to try to be this year.
Last season, I think we tried to do too many things, and ended
up with what I saw as an annoying level of “OK, who wants to do this?”
messages going out too frequently. This season, I think for big club
activities, we’re going to be better off focusing on a small number of
things. Right now, my thoughts are:
1)The spring
camp for new(ish) triathletes, some time in late April or early May
2)Support for
the Blaine Blazing 8k on 4th of July weekend (sorry, Dan, if I
butchered the name)
This first of these is what has brought most people into the
club, is a lot of fun to do, and I think is a very valuable event. The
second is a pretty amazing race that one of the club’s founders, Dan
Hauck, has been producing for the past few years, and has been growing by leaps
and bounds.
I’m also thinking, as the club changes, that a
significant change in the membership structure is in order (based on both my
experience with the club and your responses to the questionnaire). Our
dues have been going up for some time now, as we kept trying to do more and
more, but the level of service the members got wasn’t going up in line
with the dues (as I saw things, anyway). So I’ve been considering
the idea of converting the club to a free, opt-in organization. You want
to be a member, sign up on the list and you’re in. There may be a
form or two that a sponsor requires, and I’ll have to move our waiver of
liability to the list subscription, but it really streamlines things.
The benefits of membership, then, are access to whatever
sponsorship programs exist (still working on those for ’07) and
communication with the club – email, public calendar, and a forum for
likeminded folks of varying experience levels to bond with, bounce ideas off
of, find training partners, etc. Club swag (t-shirts, singlets, swim
caps, etc.) would be available for purchase, and may or may not be required for
any particular sponsor’s program (again, still working on it, but, for example,
Erik’s required you to race in the TC Tri/Erik’s singlet for
discounts last season). That allows each member to set their own level of
involvement, their own level of cost ($0 to as high as you want to go), and the
level of camaraderie they desire.
The camp, then, instead of being free to members, would have
a cost associated with it (as it costs some money to produce), but it sticks
with the self-selecting mode that seems pretty attractive.
So, my questions are:
1)Are these
two events things that people are interested in seeing supported? Who
would come to the camp? Who might volunteer for the race?
2)Is this
membership/fee model attractive to you?
3)Is there any
particular program or sponsor availability that would put you over the edge
(either for or against) the club?
How many races are you planning for 07?
I'm committed to one so far. I'll add as I figure out my schedule.
What is the longest A priority race you're planning?
Half-Iron
Are you planning/willing to volunteer at any races?
Absolutely!
Are you interested in leading or participating in group workouts?
Occasionally? Regularly?
Participating, definitely. My work schedule is too erratic to commit
to leading one.
Are you interested in helping with the administration of the club?
(website, membership, workout coordinator, volunteer coordinator,
event planner, etc.)
Possibly. I don't really feel qualified to any of this.
Are you familiar with Erik's sponsorship program in 06? Did you use
it? How important is it to you?
Yes. I buy all my stuff from Erik's, but didn't do enough races last
year to qualify for the rewards.
Do you own a TC Tri race singlet? Yes.
Are you interested in attending or helping with our spring camp for
new triathletes? (usually in April or May) Yes.
Are you interested in non-workout/race club socializing?
I'm tepid on this one.
Is there anything you'd like to see the club do that we're not
doing? Are you willing to help with that?
Yes, I am planning to volunteer for a
couple races
Yes, I am willing to help with
administration: membership and event planning
Yes, I was familiar with
Erik’s sponsorship program in 06, and used it extensively. I also bought
everything I needed there.

Hi all,
With 2007
almost upon us, we need to do a little housekeeping and planning for the
year. We’ll see a flurry of new inquiries shortly after New Years,
and having things more or less in order is a big plus ;-)
So, first a
quick review of 06. It wasn’t our best year, to be frank --
not a lot of social activity, low workout participation, not a lot of
member-to-member face time (as best I could tell, anyway). We also have
Ingrid, one of the club’s founders and president, moving out of that role
to focus on her Team in Training coaching (very positive for her and the sport,
inconvenient for us). Our sponsorship with Erik’s may also be
changing to some extent. I’m not sure what’s happening there,
but will certainly pass on info as I have it.
We had some
real high points, as well, and they shouldn’t be ignored. The
spring camp was great. This is a big event for the club, probably the
single most important club activity in any single year. We had good
turnout, good instruction, and great participation from the new folks. If
we only did one thing every year, for me, this would be it.
We also got
our new race wear made and in circulation. I think the singlets look
great, and they made us more visible than ever before at – and especially
during – races. This was a huge deal for us, and was really
important for our development as a club.
So,
here’s where we are. We need to figure out what the club is going
to be as we evolve. I think we need to know a little more about what
everyone is planning and is interested in doing. I’ve put together
a few questions that may help. You can feel free to respond to the list
or just to me at rich.friedeman@gmail.com
or rich@..., if you’d like to
keep things in a less public forum.

Please join me in wishing Mark good luck as he takes on the Silverman
full ironman this Sunday in Nevada. Silverman (www.silvermannv.com) is
billed as the "toughest course in North America", and this will be
Mark's first. Good luck, Mark, and have fun!
That doesn’t look like the one I
have, but I’ll check the make and model. Thanks so much for bringing
awareness! I definitely don’t need another fall on the road!

I just spotted this recall announcement for certain Time
pedals. Don’t know a lot of triathletes who use them, but it looks like
it could lead to a serious fall if you have a problem, so it’s probably
worth passing around.
I have some yoga tapes you could look at
that are awesome.
I also have a nutrition program on the
computer I could run through with you.
We plus in your nutrition diary and it’ll
let us know where you’re deficient, what you have too much of and how you
need to eat to get to your weight goals. I use it on my clients. It’s
invaluable!!
Let me know if you’re interested. I
currently have three clients I am personal training and would like to add 1 or
2 more.

A couple of my off-season goals are to:
1. Increase my flexibility
2. Lose about 10 pounds
Related to #1, I am looking for some resources/ideas on stretches to
increase flexibility and, perhaps, a yoga class in the Anoka area.
Relative to #2, I am looking for a trainer/nutritionist who can work
with me through the winter months to help me adjust my diet and/or
workout routine.
Any suggestions? Hope you all had a great season!

Everything is on hold right now until I meet with Libby from
Erik's.
There are most likely some major changes being made and you'll want
to hold off until then.

Eric is right that the membership year
starts in January. Historically, though, when folks have joined either
late or after the season, we’ve simply carried that membership over
through the next year, so there’s no reason not to get the process
rolling now.

Ok...so I have been a bit lax in checking my mail and now see you have moved. I just want to wish you well! Are you going to stop doing tri's or is there a chance you will go back to it?
You may know that Tri-Zone, a mail order triathlon gear retailer, is a
sponsor of the Twin Cities Triathlon Club. I recently discovered that
they offer a 15% discount to TC-Tri club members.
To get the discount on an internet order, use the code TZ-TCTRI in the
coupon/promotion area of the check-out page. Go to tri-zone.com or
link to it from the tctri.com home page. They have some good specials
and free stuff with purchase going on right now. Happy shopping!
It looks like we'll have about 20 riders, based on commitments from TCBC and MORC members. Come on out and join us.

be there earlier, some will arrive later, some will come & go throughout the day.....BUT COME & RIDE WHEN YOU CAN!
If you would like to commemorate your own STUPID ride, Tim Brinkman has done some great work with a T-shirt designer so you can wear your STUPID shirt with pride. Please contact him @ email address below, or talk with him Saturday.
Some have asked about our ride format for the day. We'll all be riding our laps at our own pace on the 4.6 mile loop and meeting at "rest breaks" near our vehicles in the grassy parking area. Bring your cooler, a comfy chair and your best attitude for a Fun-filled Day!

I spoke with Mark Birchard who is a good friend of Brad's this
morning. Brad's son will be staying with other family until Brad
comes home.
At mile 26 Brad suffered a heart attack and was taken to the
hospital where he had two stents put in. This is to make sure those
arteries will stay open and not become blocked again. He was put
into an induced coma to allow his body to recover from the strain of
both the Ironman and the Marathon. They ice you down and heavily
sedate you to allow the body to rest. They will be bringing him
slowly out of this state within the next 24 hours. Please pray for
him and his family over the next 24 hours especially and throughout
this week. Hopefully he'll be discharged later this week if all
goes well. Brad has no prior history of health issues so this was a
surprise to all of his family and friends.
If you'd like to do something for the family, please let us know.
I'm sure as he comes home, meals and friends to help out with his
son would be much appreciated. We'll keep you updated as we find
out more. Thanks so much for all your support. Team Under
Construction has also been notified and may be organizing some
support for Brad and his family.
