Rich,
I couldn't agree with you more. The key word you said was "goals". Myself, I always have short term, and long term goals specifically geared toward key events. The best thing Adam could do right know is lay those out, and just put the work in starting immediately. I would recommend above average weight training at least for the next 3 months as this will help with building that muscle mass that will be lost as the season comes into full swing as well as increase recovery time, and help to prevent those nagging injuries that some have throughout the season. Obviously listening to your body and getting as much rest as possible, and taking the right supplements are all key factors that will help in your performance. Adam, once you get started you will be SO addicted just like the rest of us tri-geeks! Good luck with everything! And please let me know if you need help with anything else....

it depends on your goals for your first season and your current
fitness/skills. If you have a strong background in one of the sports,
this is generally the time of year to put that one on the back burner
and just try to keep from losing ground -- so a strong cyclist would do
more run or swim training. If you're equally strong (or weak) in all
three, it's the perfect time to combine slow, endurance oriented
activity with technique work, esp. in the pool -- it's really impossible
to drill to much in the pool at this time of year unless you're already
a great swimmer.
As you have some time before things ramp-up (particularly here in MN),
doing some real planning and thinking about what you want to do this
year is highly advisable. It's great that you're getting started this
year, but it's very helpful too work out pretty specific goals to guide
that start. "Get started in triathlon" doesn't give you a lot of clear
direction. "Complete one Sprint race (.5m/15m/3k) by June 30 and 2
Oly's (15k/40k/10k) by late August" makes it very clear the particular
things you'll have to do and when. It's much easier, then, to work the
calendar backwards, establish milestones, training periods, etc.
January is a perfect time to do that planning since you have enough
training time left to fit in a huge variety of training, regardless of
what the particular goals are.
What's your background? What are your plans?
