Yeah Kirana, he planned on playing it, so no you're not going crazy.
But what probably happened is that he wasn't ranked high enough at
the time of the acceptance lists to get in directly, so he was
planning on qualifying. However he was in Scottsdale when he needed
to be at the Pacific Life qualifying draw in Indian Wells ... kinda
sucky all around. They could have given him a wild card -- now I know
he said that he wants to earn his way into tournaments, but just this
once I think it would've been okay considering he HAD to be in
Scottsdale until Saturday and possibly Sunday. The tournament
could've cut him a break! Because now he's not in the Scottsdale
final nor in any draw at Indian Wells :-(
Thanks for the article, TD, that tidbit from Eileen, and hi Jac! :)
It would have been the greatest gift to see Taylor in another final
after defeating Hewitt, but his performance in Scottsdale is already
beyond our expectation -- I mean, first time entering and he reached
semis -- go Tails!
I think Taylor now knows what it would really take and areas of his
game that needs improving to beat a player of Hewitt's class.
Overall, it's a good step in the right direction. Hopefully we'll be
seeing him in more semis in the future :)
Now that his journey in Scottsdale has ended, I went and checked the
draw for Pacific Life Open, and I didn't see Taylor's name in the
draw, and yes, I checked the quallies too. I find it a little weird
since I thought he was always fond of playing in Indian Wells. Was it
just me that missed his name on the sheet or is he not playing Indian
Wells for a reason?
Kirana
No pics, but did find a little bit on Jenny's goings-on at the
pacific life open site:

On the Cat Walk at Indian Wells
Looking good was the order of the day for more than 100 guests
attending Saturday's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Show, held in the Indian
Wells Tennis Garden's Tennis Village.
ATP stars James Blake and Nicolas Kiefer escorted professional models
and players from the womenÍs tour, including Lisa Raymond, Jennifer
Hopkins and Kim Po. The women modeled various casual and tennis wear
from several top designers, including Billy Blues, Fabrizio Gianni,
Michael Stars and Emil Rutenberg. Clothing was provided by tony
boutiques along El Paseo, the city of Palm DesertÍs answer to Rodeo
Drive.
Rounding out the morningÍs entertainment, professional dancers
Cecelia and Chandler performed several numbers. The show also
featured door prizes, including Mercedes-Benz-branded teddy bears and
watches from the Tourneau/Mercedes-Benz Watch Collection.
"We were very happy with the way the fashion show went today, and we
look forward to doing it again, bigger and better, next year," said
Dee Dee Felich, the Pacific Life OpenÍs assistant tournament director.
Hewitt tops Dent to reach final
.c The Associated Press
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt dismissed Taylor
Dent of the United States 6-2, 6-4 Saturday in the Templeton Tennis
Classic semifinals.
Hewitt will play Mark Philippoussis or Mariano Zabaleta in Sunday's
final.
``I was in a bit of a zone passing-wise and returning-wise today,''
said Hewitt, a finalist three times in four Scottsdale appearances.
``I was pleased with the way, after he would play a great game, I was
able to come back and play a great game. I felt pretty good out
there. I was seeing the ball well.''
Hewitt has won all three matches against Dent, whose biggest asset is
his serve. Hewitt, of course, is a top returner.
``I just tried stepping it up on his serve,'' said Hewitt, the 2001
U.S. Open and 2002 Wimbledon champion. ``I was actually standing in
closer than a lot of guys would on his serve. There's not a lot of
guys can return his serve as well as I did today. He has a huge
serve. I tried to take away his weapon as much as possible, and it
paid off.''
Dent, a winner last month in Memphis, had won eight straight matches
and won 16 of his last 17 sets before facing Hewitt. He entered the
tournament ranked a career-high 42nd.
``Just not solid enough,'' Dent said. ``I hoped I could step up my
level of play. I couldn't make enough volleys.''
lleyton beat Tails 6-2, 6-4...but way to fight out there Taylor!!! ;]

Hey Jac, it's great to hear from you! I'm still working on your tape,

otherwise I don't have two VCR's ... but hey, I promise you'll get

can stay on a role. Hewitt's a tall order but you can't be the best
if you don't beat the best!
Hey guys, any time a tournament doesn't put up a live scoreboard,
just go to http://www.livescore.com/tennis.dll and follow along
there. It's not as good as when ATP decides to do an ACTUAL real time
scoreboard but it's pretty good. Hewitt/Dent hasn't started quite
yet, but it ought to any time now ...
Hello People ! !
How are you? I'm good. Just posting to say how good it is to hear that Taylor
won in Memphis and still winning more matches. I hope he will win another final
this weekend - what would be better for me would be to actually see the
tournaments, but no such luck *sigh*
Anyway, TD - i'm still here on your mailing list. I know I seldom post, but I am
here (and since the start of you creating the list too - just a different
username!) and just wanted you to know how much I appreciate what you do for us

Hey guys -- TD, Josh, and everyone!
Quite long an article I'm posting, but then again, they *are* in the
semis :D (yes, yes, that's just a mental reminder for me that
Taylor's in another semi yet again, lol) I'm just posting the parts
having to do with Taylor and Lleyton.

FRANKLIN TEMPLETON TENNIS CLASSIC

MARCH 7, 2003

Hewitt Faces Dent in Scottsdale Semis
-------------------------------------
Wild card Mark Philippoussis meets Mariano Zabaleta
Friday at the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic top seed Lleyton
Hewitt advanced to his first 2003 semifinal by defeating No. 6 seed
Alex Corretja 6-4, 6-2.
Australian wild card Mark Philippoussis is among the last four after
having beaten third-seed David Nalbandian 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The two Australians are also qualified for the doubles semifinals
after defeating third-seeds Don Johnson and Jared Palmer.
The lone American left in the Scottsdale draw, Taylor Dent, scored a
quarterfinal win over Spain's David Sanchez 6-1, 6-3. Mariano
Zabaleta defeated James Blake 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
---------------------
Hewitt
------
"I felt pretty much in control of the match. I was up an early break
in the second set and the second set could have been a lot easier
really. I broke in the first game pretty comfortably and then had
game points to hold in the next game and then had love-30 on his
serve again. I felt got better as the match went on which is another
good thing. I felt like in the second set I was the better player for
most of it and in the end it showed."
"I'm getting better and still feel like I could play a lot better.
I'm handling conditions better now and getting adjusted after coming
here from the clay courts in Davis Cup. It's been a little bit
different and it's been a really good week so far. Hopefully I could
keep it going but even if something went wrong the next couple of
days I wouldn't be disappointed. Coming here I think I made the right
decision preparing for Indian Wells and Miami."
Dent
----
On playing Lleyton Hewitt: "I owe him a couple. He beat me in the
juniors once and at Wimbledon in five (two years ago). This surface
definitely suits him more than the grass. I am going to go out there
and do what I can and see what happens."
On his win over Sanchez: "He played well and he wasn't missing much
from the back. He was staying a long way back and with the slow
conditions here it was tough for me to serve and volley. He was
hitting at my shoes all the time but I managed to grind each service
game out and I played well on his service games. I had a few breaks
which gave me some breathing room."

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish they have a live scoreboard... Anyway, I hope that Dent gets
through to the final so that you guys can get to see him play again.
I was fortunate enough to get to see him in that Memphis final
(unfortunately, same case as TD, no tape) and he has improved a lot
since I last saw him play. I just really want to see that rematch
with Hewitt, though. Nevermind about the final(since, should he get
there, he'll face either Mark or Mariano), even though I'm sure it'll
be a good match anyhow, I just want to see him do that payback
because that rain interrupted his so-close-to-winning game against
Lleyton back in Wimbly... *sigh* Oh well...
Go Taylor!
Kirana
Hey, it's been another long week of homework for me, but I just have
time to make my quick prediction before going to bed. I completely
agree with TD that Hewitt has just the game to "counterpunch"
Taylor's aggressive play. He's not referred to as the best
counterpuncher in the world for nothing. His precise, compact
groundstrokes are ideal for hitting passing shots and he has the
speed and endurance to chase down many balls and force Dent to work
extra hard. Also, Hewitt's return of serve is the most consistent on
tour, a necessary skill to survive Dent's serve. If Taylor is on his
game like he was yesterday, it should still be a good match. Keep in
mind that in their previous matchup in Wimbledon, the grass surface
helped Dent tremendously, while Hewitt is at home on the hardcourts.
The thing Taylor has going for him is that he's on a big hot streak,
while this is Hewitt's first tourney since Australia, so I pray that
he's still rusty. It would be so cool if Tails can make it 9 in a
row because if he can beat Hewitt, then he can beat anyone on tour.
Moreover, we'll finally get to see him on tv, so I'll be rooting for
Taylor more than ever!!
Josh
Yeah it IS weird! I remember when we'd be lucky for two wins in a
row, nevermind two semis in a row ... Hewitt is such a tough guy to
stick a volley against, he runs down everything and his passing shots
are so on. He could get the best of the best serve'n'volleyers,
Sampras, Rafter, you name it. So yeah, today will be so tough. Most
of all I hope Taylor does his self proud and puts a good fight. If he
wins, then bonus! The final of Scottsdale will be showed here on ESPN
or ESPN2, at 9 PM ET US, but I unfortunately have no tape or VCR :-(
sorry guys, else I'd pass it on.
*jumps up and down excitedly*
I know what you mean, TD. This really feels weird, actually, seeing
him play another semi in back to back tourneys... wow... but
definitely excited for Tails! And the fact that he'll next play
Lleyton and getting us that rematch... *sigh* Why are my dreams on
his matches turning true at each round nowadays? This so needs me
some getting used to, lol... And when we finally get our rematch,
there's no tv coverage for this extravagant event -- pfft! Mt tv's
only showing Delray Beachh tourney's semis and final, but not
Franklin Templeton's.. making me a little annoyed since Tails is in a
tourney that's not watchable from my tv..
Anyhow, this is just my opinion, but I think Taylor vs. Lleyton semi
would be a much more interesting match than the future final (granted
both players must be at their best, of course). Hewitt also went
through some nice players en route to the semi - Fernando, Wayne, and
Alex. Look at that, two semis, two wildcards, two Aussies, one half-
Aussie, and an Argentinian. Interesting line-up, isn't it?
All in all, I bet that Taylor's semi will test his stamina, agility,
and court coverage, since we all know fair and square what kind of
player Hewitt is. Hewitt'll be scrambling all over the court chasing
every ball, no doubt, and in a way I hope Taylor makes the best out
of his s&v style to earn him some "cheap" point without having to
sweat much on his serve. I believe he knows how to play Hewitt.
Enough on me rambling, just good luck to Taylor!
Hopefully they'll be having a great match(which I really want to
see!),

I think Taylor'll be playing his quarterfinal match against Sanchez
in a couple of hours, but in the meantime, here's a tidbit I found
while browsing FTTC site:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Full article can be found under "Thursday's Preview Notes" at
http://fttc.scottsdaletennis.com/news/detailnews.asp?NewsID=28
ZABALETA OUSTS NO. 5 SEED SCHUETTLER
------------------------------------
(cut to the point where they mentioned Taylor)
Taylor Dent came from behind to beat countryman Cecil Mamiit 4-6, 6-
2, 6-0, to improve his match winning streak to seven on the season.
Dent was broken three times in the first set and he saved seven of 10
break points in the match. Dent takes on Spaniard David Sanchez in
the quarterfinals on Friday. Sanchez beat qualifier Giovanni Lapentti
6-3, 7-6(5).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
---------------------
Dent: On rebounding back from losing the first set: "I had the wrong
game plan I guess. I was trying to bomb my serves and I wasn't
getting many in. And the ones I was getting in he was ripping them at
my feet or for winners. I got broken three times in the first set and
if that happens, I would be amazed if anybody would win a set. But
the second and third sets I tried a lot more on my accuracy and spin
and it seemed to work."
On comparing his play here to Memphis: "It's a little bit more of a
grind here. The court is a lot slower and the balls are heavier. In
Memphis, I felt like it was rare if guys even got break point against
my serve. I was really serving and volleying well. Here it's a little
bit different. The conditions are a lot heavier and guys are going to
get better looks. I'm having to grind a little bit more but it's good
for me. I need to learn to do everything."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Later,
Kirana
P/S:Good luck in the quarters, Tails!
He can definitely breakthrough and win every match! :)
Can I just say that all these continuous win is making me dizzy with
happiness? :D Great news for Taylor that he's advancing. He's only
playing the day after tomorrow, against David Sanchez if I'm not
mistaken. And I have a good feeling about that match (yes, yes, I'm
being my most careful not to jinx it, lol)..
Go Taylor!

Taylor Dent defeated Cecil Mamit 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the first ever

last month, has won his last seven matches.

I don't think exhaustion will be TOO much of a problem, Kir.
Remember, he's a new and improved Taylor fitness wise! Plus they lost
in straight sets, and the day before Taylor won in straight sets, so
that's gotta help. And if Taylor's made the commitment to doubles, as
he's said before that he has, then I would assume that he can handle
it physically. Also, a lot of the IS events have you playing back-to-
back matches; if you play your Rd2 on THursday, then you got QF
Friday, SF Saturday, and F Sunday. So I think he'll be okay :-D
Hopefully I didn't jinx anything ... go Tails!
hey TD, Trish(how's uni, girl?), and all the others!
Here I am to bring you guys the result of the doubles match that was
played between Taylor/Robby against James/Merklein.
Sad to say (though I'm sure they gave their best), Taylor and Robby
lost to James and his partner:
BLAKE (USA)/MERKLEIN (BAH) d. DENT (USA)/GINEPRI (USA) 6-4, 7-5
Before their doubles match, Robby played and was defeated by
Zabaleta, so maybe he was tired, I don't know...
ZABALETA (ARG) d. GINEPRI (USA) 7-6(6), 6-3
Today, Wednesday the 5th, Taylor'll be playing Cecil after the match
between Lapentti and Sanchez, so, good luck Taylor!
Later,
Kir
P/S: I seriously hope he's not too exhausted after playing the
doubles because we want him advancing further in the singles
competition! :D
I went over to the official site and got this bit of news regarding
Taylor's current tourney in Arizona. And since no one has yet to
post it, I thought I'd do the honors ;)
The whole article not only mentions Taylor, but of other players
too, and it's kind of long if I post the entire content. But, for

Title: Enqvist Ends Agassi's Winning Streak
-----
Taylor Dent improved his match-winning streak to six with a 6-3, 7-5
victory over Andrei Pavel. Dent, who was coming off his second
career ATP title in Memphis last month, fired 10 aces in the match.
In the second round Dent takes on countryman Cecil Mamiit, who
surprised No. 8 seed Xavier Malisse 7-6(5), 7-6(3) after losing the
previous two matches against the Belgian.
What The Players Said
---------------------
Dent: "The confidence is getting there and this was my first (ATP)
match outdoors this year. All in all I played a good match. I think
it's all the hard work that I've put in is paying off."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup, hardwork definitely paying off now.. Who knows, if he can go
further, maybe we can get to see that re-match with Hewitt..
Later,
Kirana
Indeed. We avoided a *major* doozy... *sigh of relief all over*
It's so good to see him continuing that winning streak :) I'm sure
he's loaded with confidence after winning Memphis and hopefully this
great results don't stop here. I heard he fired 10 aces in the
match :D
Can I just say that I'm seriously, absolutely ecstatic to hear that
Cecil chuck out X-Man for us? Two tiebreaks.. must have been
something. And Andre beaten by Thomas *evil laugh*.. Another
uplifting thing to hear (although I would've been happier at that
news had Taylor been in the same draw. Instead, his draw has Hewitt
in it..) and it's kinda refreshing to hear surprises in the results.
Anyway, good luck to Taylor who's playing doubles with Robby today
and hopefully he's not too exhausted when he plays Cecil in the
second round :)
Go Taylor!

Tails is also playing doubles this week, with Robby Ginepri, they
take on James Blake and Mark (?) Merklein in round one on Tuesday (?).
Hoping we get more photos of newly svelt Taylor this week :-p
Tournament website is actually providing photos this time around
(*nudge nudge*crappyMemphissite*nudge nudge*).

Oy guys, Kimmy lost today! Boo! Oh well, congrats to Ai! But I hope
Kim can put her head back on straight, she's good and she should know
it!
Pavel's injured somehow. Has been since AusO. Not sure about where
and when, but his 2003 record would speak for itself. However, i
hope Pavel gives Taylor a good match, with Taylor winning of course,
in straight sets. Maybe it's lack of sleep from the new baby crying?

Enqvist/Agassi is especially interesting, I'd hope Thomas could pull
off the (huge huge) upset. My friend who's not really a tennis
initiate but who's of Swedish descent, I showed her a pic of Enqvist
and now she's in love with the guy ;-) Hehehe, so for her sake, go
Thomas! Of COURSE, go Taylor. If he were to get through he'd
probably play Xavier Malisse, I believe he's 0-3 against The X-Man.
In the bottom half I'm pulling for Blake, Enqvist, and Bjorkman, in
the top I hope it's all Taylor :-D The battle of Waynes ought to be
interesting too, I think Scottsdale plays kind of fast which may
favour Arthurs, but who knows. Pavel is 0-4 this year, having a
pretty dismal 2003. He and Tails have never met.

Tails will face Andrei Pavel (I'm sure Trish would like to see this).

best :)
