The Storm was behind all night, but with 54
seconds left, we came back to tie it up. Mike Black had a
chance to win it all with 6 secinds left, but according
to the Officials(?) it was wide right. In O.T., we
went 4 and out and the rattlers took it in.

It was another average Storm/Pred game, back and
forth, glimmers of great plays and horrible plays. The
onside kick by Orlando (and recovered by them) seemed to
be the initial turning point, and our onside kick
late in the game (failed to be recovered by the Storm)
was the final nail.<br><br>Congrats (cough-choke) to
the Preds and a hearty "See ya in Tampa on July

First home game was played June 1, 1991 at the
Florida Suncoast Dome. The St. Pete Times has a very nice
article on the history of the Storm. ALL FANS, IF YOU
HAVE ANY ZUBA STRIPES, WEAR THEM TO THE GAME
TONIGHT!!!<br><br>By JOHN C. COTEY<br><br>© St. Petersburg
Times,<br>published June 1, 2001 <br><br>TAMPA -- As confident as Bob
Gries was in his business acumen, 10 years ago to this
day he still wasn't exactly sure his plan would fly.
<br><br>Would St. Petersburg support an Arena Football League
team? Would fans come out in droves to watch a sport
very few had seen, or known about? <br><br>Would a
group of unknown athletes playing a hybrid game
bordered by padded walls and anchored by hanging nets on a
field half the size used in American football be able
to catch the fancy of the populace? <br><br>On June
1, 1991, Gries got his answer. <br><br>"We had only
sold 3,000-4,000 tickets leading up to the game, and
everybody was pretty worried," Gries said. "At that point,
I was worried, too. I told (Florida Suncoast Dome
general manager Jerry Oliver) to expect about 4,000
walk-ups. <br><br>That first night, 10,354 fans -- Gries
was right about the number of walk-ups -- offered a
precursor of the things to come just a year later when
crowds of more than 18,000 made Storm games an area
happening. <br><br>Behind quarterback Reggie Collier's seven
touchdown passes, Orlando won that first game 51-31, though
the crowd was more curious than crazed, and clearly
unfamiliar with Storm players like lineman Tom Gizzi, wide
receiver Darren Willis and kicker Paul Hickert. Chances
are, they recognized special Storm assistant Lee Roy
Selmon. <br><br>"No one knew what was going on; we didn't
know the rules, hardly," said fullback Andre Bowden,
the lone remaining player from that game. "The only
thing I remember is that there were a lot of guys out
there who wanted to play football. None of us knew
anything about the game." <br><br>Nashville coach Pat
Sperduto was a lineman on that team. He said he remembers
losing, but otherwise everything that first night was a
blur. <br><br>"It was like an experiment for all of
us," Sperduto said. "We didn't know if it would last
one season, much less 10." <br><br>For that game,
players earned $400. Had they won, they would have
received a $100 bonus. <br><br>"I thought, I'm risking my
health for this?" Gruden said. <br><br>But the most
memorable thing from that season was the red-and-blue
Zubas-style uniforms, which were presented to the players
before the first game and worn, well, begrudgingly.
<br><br>"I was embarrassed," Gruden said. <br><br>It was a
sentiment shared by everyone who wore them. At the time,
Zubas, a multicolored, zebra-striped type of design,
formed a partnership with the sponsor-hungry league.
Most teams were too embarrassed, however, to wear the
full Zubas, opting for just the stripes down the leg
on plain-colored pants. <br><br>Not the Storm, the
only team to embrace this eye-sore of a design.
<br><br>"I thought it was great; it gave an identity to
Arena football," Gries said. "We were the only team
that went with the full Zubas on the pants and jersey.
<br><br>"But I remember when I brought them into the locker
room the reaction was somewhere between fainting and
rebellion." <br><br>"Atrocious," Sperduto said. "And that's
an understatement. They were one in a million."
<br><br><br>"The biggest ovation we ever got in four years in
spite of all the championships was when we changed our
uniforms at halftime (against Miami in 1993)," Gries said.
"The fans were out of their minds. They gave us a 5-10
minute standing ovation."

Storm Welcome Back Wyatt<br><br><br><br>In order
to solidify an already solid line that leads the AFL
in sacks (nine) and has allowed the fewest (one),
the Tampa Bay Storm signed the most-decorated player
in franchise history, Willie Wyatt, who is expected
to play for this Friday¹s game against the Carolina
Cobras.<br><br>Wyatt has been named to most All-Arena teams (four)
than any player in team history and is considered one
of the best center/nose tackles the game has ever
seen. He is a candidate for the All-IRONMAN and All-15
year team that can be voted on
arenafootball.com.<br><br>Wyatt started his Arena career with the Detroit Drive
in 1993 under Storm Head Coach Tim Marcum where he
recorded three sacks. In 1994, he was part of the largest
trade in Arena history (a 12-man deal) that dealt him
to Tampa Bay. He elected not to play in 1994, but
joined the team in ¹95 when Marcum became head coach. He
made an impact from his first game with the Storm
getting sacks in his first two games, finished the year
second on the club in sacks, blocked a career and team
record three blocked kicks and earned Second-Team
All-Arena as he helped the Storm to an ArenaBowl
title.<br><br>In 1997 and Œ98, Wyatt was All-Arena First Team. One
of the strangest plays in Arena history occurred on
July 12, 1997 against the Anaheim Piranhas, when Wyatt
rushed through the line on a field goal attempt and
grabbed the ball off the kicking tee and rumbled down to
the five-yard line to the amazement of kicker Ian
Howfield.<br><br>The 1999 season was Wyatt¹s last when sustained an
injury and played just eight games, but was recognized
by the AFL with All-Arena Second Team honors. He
rejoins the club after a year away from the game. In
2000, Wyatt was named to the Storm's All-Decade
team.<br><br>Wyatt started eight games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
in 1990 and has experience with the Philadelphia
Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and the WLAF¹s Orlando
Thunder after a great college career at the University of
Alabama.
