STORM TRAINING CAMP BEGINS FEB. 11
Three Day Mini-Camp begins Thursday, Feb 7
TAMPA – The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm begin their
quest for an AFL record sixth championship Monday, February 11, as
training camps opens at the University of Tampa.
The Storm look to build upon a successful run at the end of the 2007
season that catapulted the team into the playoffs. "We have a solid
nucleus returning for the (2008) season," said general manager and
head coach Tim Marcum. "With some key additions we hope to pick up
where we left of last season."
The season kicks off with a three day mini-camp at the University of
Tampa. Those three days will lay the groundwork for the upcoming
season as the playbook is implemented through meetings and two-a-day
action on the field.
Arena Football teams are allowed to construct a training camp roster
of 37 players. At the conclusion of camp, three weeks after
reporting, the official team roster will be cut down to 24 names.
Hopefuls this season include open tryout invitees FB Jason Schule (5-
11, 248, Louisiana Monroe) and QB Mitch Tanney (6-4, 220, Monmouth)
and three local rookies LB Terrance Royal (6-3, 270, South Florida,
Wharton HS), WR Tyrone Timmons (6-5, 225, Mississippi Valley State,
Tampa Bay Tech HS) and DB Bryant Tisdale (5-9, 190, UTEP, Dunedin HS).
Key veterans returning include, All-Arena WR Lawrence Samuels, Rookie
of the Year QB Brett Dietz, record-setting fullback Torrance Marshall
and touchdown-leading wide receiver Terrill Shaw. Key offseason
acquisitions include OL Kenyatta Jones (6-5, 298, South Florida),
KR/WR Sedrick Robinson (5-10, 185, Kentucky Wesleyan) and WR/LB David
Saunders (6-2, 210, West Virginia).
The team also returns DL Tom Briggs, FB/LB Marvin Brown, QB Stoney
Case, DL Ernest Certain, WR Hank Edwards, OL, Geir Gudmundsen, DB
Jeroid Johnson, DB Byron Jones, OL Tom Kaleita, K Seth Marler, DL Tim
McGill, DL Clint Mitchell, DB Khalid Naziruddin, OL Marcus Owen, DB
Traco Rachal, and DL Mark Word.
The Storm will kickoff the 2008 home schedule when they host the
Southern Division champion Georgia Force in the season opener on
Friday, March 7 – 7:30 pm on Bill Currie Ford Field at the St. Pete
Times Forum. Fans can get a preview of the 2008 Storm team Thursday,
February 21 at 7 pm as Tampa Bay hosts a scrimmage against the
Orlando Predators.
