Hey gang,
here's an article on disc golf that was in Business Week magazine.
You can find it at the folloing link and/or read below:

Look, Ma, No Clubs
Disc golf is catching on. It's fun, fast, and free
Chris Mahon sweats his way toward the 13th hole of the golf course
outside Worcester, Mass. "It's going to be tough," says Mahon, a 29-
year-old trader for Fidelity Investments, as he scans the narrow
fairway dotted with trees. He frowns, then reaches into his bag for
his driver -- a bright red plastic disc.
What happened to the 1 wood? The game Mahon is playing is actually
disc golf, where colorful plastic discs similar to Frisbees replace
clubs and balls, bushel-size baskets strung up on poles replace the
small hole in the ground, and some of the mostly male players sport
ponytails and tie-dyed T-shirts instead of collars and wing tips. And
unlike golf, admission to the 1,135 public and private disc-golf
courses -- twice the number in 1997 -- across the U.S. is usually
free. (Private courses are often on some player's land.) "There are
no tee times, no greens fees," says Mike Snelson, co-owner of Gotta
Go Gotta Throw, a wholesaler of disc golf gear in Minneapolis. "I can
play nine holes and be back to work in 45 minutes."
Here's how the game works: Like traditional golf, disc courses
typically have 9 or 18 holes. The holes run from about 200 feet to
500 feet and range from par 3s to par 5s, with par 3s being more
typical. Scoring is the same, with birdies, pars, bogies, and worse.
Players throw the disc, pick it up where it lands, and throw again --
usually using a different disc -- until they "putt" with a smaller
disc into the basket. A good player can "drive" about 300 feet,
beginners 200. Pros carry about a dozen discs of different sizes and
rim depths for different throws. Some are designed for long, slow
curves to the right or left, others for rapid curves.
Disc golf is more free-spirited than the traditional game, but it's
not just for slackers and Jerry Garcia fans, either. Steve Hartwell,
an IBM software programmer from Reading, Mass., plays regularly and
has made it a family affair: He, his wife, and two kids often play
and compete in tournaments. The buzz on the circuit is that Supreme
Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor plays and even bought gear for a
resort she frequents in Wisconsin. Discraft, of Wixom, Mich., and
Innova Disc Golf of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., are the leading disc
makers. Prices range from $6.99 to about $11.99.
The game's been around since the mid-1970s, but now is spreading out
from its strongholds in the Midwest, Texas, and California. Between 5
million and 10 million people have played disc golf at least once,
and about 500,000 play regularly, says the Professional Disc Golf
Assn., the nonprofit governing body for the sport. The PDGA writes
the rules, serves as an information clearinghouse for the sport, and
sponsors tournaments. Total purses in 2002: more than $1 million.
Course and tournament info can be found at pdga.com.
At a recent tournament near Worcester, Mahon explains his strategy
as he steps up the tee for the 361-foot, par-4 hole: "I'm just trying
to pitch around the trees on the way down, nice and tight."
The "fairway" is a path through the woods.
A hush falls over the other members of his fivesome as Mahon winds
up. The disc flies straight and low for more than 150 feet, avoiding
all trees. "Sweet!" says one admiring golfer. Mahon parred the hole
with his orange putter. Another player who gambled on his putt and
ended up over a cliff finished the hole in eight strokes. Like golf,
it can make you tear your hair out.

I've got a one page (3 six-player cards) .pdf roughed up...just
lacking a few numbers I failed to get my last trip out. If anyone has
an older scorecard around can you post the following numbers for me?
What I didn't have I tried to glom from the photos on this group.
Blue Tee, Hole 5 distance
Blue Tee, Hole 13 distance
Blue Tee, Hole 13 par
Blue Tee, Hole 15 distance
Blue Tee, Hole 15 par
Also:
1)A previous message states that the par for hole 11 on the sign may
be incorrect. It currently has both red and blue tees as par
5...what's correct?
2) since they moved the baskets on holes 5 and 14, does anyone know
what the current/approximate distances are

Ok, guys and gals, here's the deal. Darren and I, the co-directors of
the Seven Hills Hurlers Disc Golf Club, have teamed up and started
what is being hailed as the DIRECTOR'S CHALLENGE!
The DIRECTOR'S CHALLENGE is where we, the directors, take double's
challenges from anyone and everyone. In short, Darren and I will play
ANY doubles pairing this city has to offer. This will be a continual,
ongoing event. We will be keeping overall records and details of each
match-up. These records/details will be posted on the web and updated
monthly on the board. There is NO LIMIT on how many times a team can
challenge us! You can also have different partners each time you
challenge us, or, keep the same partner the entire time! However,
there is a catch! We ARE NOT playing best shot doubles, we're playing
ALTERNATE SHOT DOUBLES!
RULES: At the beginning of each hole, a team will decide which member
will be driving (throwing the first shot). After the throw is made,
the other team member must take the next shot from where the previous
throw landed. Each shot is alternated (between team members) until
the hole is completed. Alternate shot doubles adds alot more
competition and strategy, while putting more of an emphasis on "team
work." Not to mention, it's a much faster paced game (using half the
throws of the best shot format).
We are hoping to start a tradition for future directors of the club!
As we think it's a great way for the director's of the club to be
more visible on the scene, as well as get a chance to play with alot
of new people.
Do you think you have what it takes? Here's your chance to whip up on
the directors and get your name on the records sheet! As previously
stated, this will be an ongoing event and records will be kept!!!! If
you'd like to challenge us, email us, or catch us out on the course.
In the near future, we'll be announcing a time in which both of us
will be at the course each week, for those "drop by" challenges!
'
We hope to see each and everyone of you, paired up, in many different
teams! Let's see what you got! ;-) This event starts immediately!
If you have any questions, let us know.

Hey guys,
I'm working on getting a club version of the scorecard in the works.
Right now, parks and Rec are responsible, but in the future, the club
will be helping out.
James, welcome! You guys might wanna consider using the message board
at the club site as well! If you'd like to be added to our e-mailout
(disc golf updates for Tallahassee) , let me know.

We're probably going out this afternoon after work. If I can get hold
of one, I'll pdf it and post it to the group.

After a few weeks of procrastination a friend and I finally dropped
by the TB course Sunday morning with new discs in hand and schlupped
our first round of disc golf. Yeah...we're definitely hitting the
course again soon...had a great time.
Just wondering who is responsible for printing the scorecards? Tally
parks and rec? A particular volunteer? The mailbox was empty when we
went (Saturday crowds?).
Is there an online version somewhere that I can print for myself
before I go out? Are any available at the local sporting goods stores?
James
just so ya'll would know I wasn't blowing wind . . . . here's how the
USGA uses scores in establishing handicaps . . .should work just fine
for disc golf and you could start having your tournaments when 5
scores are received (would take the best 1 scores if only 5 rounds
in . . . up to best 10 scores from last rolling 20 rounds, etc.)
see below (go to www.usga.com) for full rules on handicapping
alan thompson
- - - - - - - - -
10-2. USGA Handicap Index Formula
The USGA Handicap Index Formula is based on the best handicap
differentials in a player's scoring record. If a player's scoring
record contains 20 or more scores, the best 10 handicap differentials
of the most recent 20 scores are used to calculate the USGA Handicap
Index. The percentage of scores used in a scoring record decreases
from the maximum of the best 50 percent as the number of scores in
the scoring record decreases. If the scoring record contains 9 or 10
scores, only the best three scores (30 to 33 percent) in the scoring
record will be used. Thus, the accuracy of a player's Handicap Index
is directly proportional to the number of acceptable scores posted. A
USGA Handicap Index shall not be issued to a player who has returned
fewer than five acceptable scores. The following procedures
illustrate how authorized golf associations and golf clubs calculate
a player's Handicap Index.
The procedure for calculating Handicap Indexes is as follows:
Use the table below to determine the number of handicap differentials
to use;
Number of
Acceptable Scores / Differentials
To Be Used
5 or 6 / Lowest 1
7 or 8 / Lowest 2
9 or 10 / Lowest 3
11 or 12 / Lowest 4
13 or 14 / Lowest 5
15 or 16 / Lowest 6
17 / Lowest 7
18 / Lowest 8
19 / Lowest 9
20 / Lowest 10
Hey everyone!
The Seven Hills Hurlers Disc Golf Club invites you to participate in
the 6-month Bag Tag Challenge event! The bag tag challenge is a fun
game for all skills levels that is played by numerous disc golf
organizations all over the world! Each participant is given a
numbered "bag tag" which is attached to his or her disc golf bag (if
you don't have a bag, we can get you one that can be hung around your
neck). The purpose of the game is to challenge other
participants/friends, for their tag. Challenges can be for 9 or 18
holes (must be decided on before the challenge). After the match,
depending on the outcome, players may swap cards (the winner
receives/keeps the lowest number (IE # 5), while the other party
receives/keeps the higher number (IE # 17). The object of the game is
to work on getting the lowest card number. It's a great game for the
seasoned pro, as well as the beginner because it offers a wide
variety of challenges at many different skill levels. Plus, it's a
great way to have fun (for 6 months) and support your local club! So,
contact us to get your tag now! Up to 40 Tags are available!
This Saturday, April 12th at 1:00PM we will be handing out the first
bag tags! We'll be playing a round of golf and the first tags will be
handed out based on scores. If player A has the best score at 2
under, player A will be awarded the #1 bag tag. If player B has the
second best score at 1 under, he/she will be awarded the #2 bag tag
and so on. Ties will be broken on a hole-to-hole basis.
If you can't make it this Saturday, no worries! Just email us to
reserve your bag tag! Tell your friends! It's a 6 month event, so
spread the word, we'll be taking participants for the next 5 months!
More information, as well as the rules, can be found at

This weekend, The "Seven Hills Hurlers" Disc Golf Club was created!
Over the next few weeks, we will be putting alot of things together,

* Club Charter
* Tallahassee Democrat Announcement
* Calendar of Events
* Announcement of Club Officers
* Logos for T-Shirts and Membership cards
* Community services and events
* Park Clean up days

Our meetings will be held the first Saturday of each month, following
the monthly random draw doubles tournaments. We will be accepting new

Basically, a paid membership and a free membership. To become
a "free" member, all you have to do is donate a beat-up disc that you
do not throw anymore. This disc will be signed and dated by you (we
welcome other comments and art work to the disc), to be put up on the
club wall (club wall is at our meeting place). Paid memberships, the
ins and outs (benefits and price) will be annouced at a later time.
So, we're looking forward to seeing all of you become club members so
we can keep this great sport growing in Tallahassee. If you would
like to join the club, please email me at desabends@..., so
we can get you set up and on the monthly E-news letter!

That is an awesome idea. I believe I could gather up at least one,
maybe two teams to play in this league. My friends and I just picked
it up about a month ago and play all the time now. I know they would
be very interested in doing a tournament. Your draft is a very nice
proposal and hope it works out.

That's very cool. I hope there is enough interest in the area to make
it worth while.
I've already spoken with some people I know and they seem interested.
We'll see...

I would like to start a Disc Golf League. I've done a prelimary
draft format for how such a league would/could work. It would
basically model a traditional bowling league in prize fund structure,
though it would be much less expensive since it is free to play disc
golf at Tom Brown Park.
You can go to the following web address to view this draft model:
I'll post this at Tom Brown Park also. Looking to get an
organizational meeting on April 4th, 2003 @ 6:30pm by hole # 1 tee.
Thanks for any comments / suggestions.

There a huge plot of land along Miccosukee road near I-10 called the
Miccosukee Greenway. A friend of mine took me out there last week to
check it out. The western end might be a nice place for a new
course. The entrance to that side is near Miccosukee Rd and
Edenfield...there's also an entrance down by Thornton Rd.
It's mostly open, but there are a few spots of trees and rolling
hills...kinda like Lenora in GA.
