Hello!

Our e-group turned one-year old last November 28. With 73 members, we're now the biggest Philippine-based e-group othat is dedicated to tai chi and qigong..

We're a mix of people with almost zero knowledge of tai chi and qigong and those regularly practicing as well as teaching. The growth of our e-group as well as of each member depends largely on our exchange of experiences, ideas, and information through emails. Keep writing. Others are very much interested to hear from you. Share interesting articles that you know, or video clips that you enjoyed watching. Inform the group of any local tai chi and qigong event that is forthcoming i your area.

It's good that some members are able to meet on Sundays at UP. This surely helps a lot in learning and mastering our art... Let's also look forward to bigger events where we can be together, like celebrating the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day.

Good day, and be of good chi!

Yes, Joey. That's exactly the 24-form, the names of the 24 postures.

The #7 and #8 are also called "Grab the Bird's Tail.
#12 is sometimes called "High Pat on Horse".
The "lower movement" in #16 and 17 is also called "Snake Creeps Down".
#23 is also called "Embrace the tiger."

By the way, Rudolph, I would think that those attending to the session will either have no knowledge of tai chi, or have a little, or at least the 24 form. Some, like me, will attend the liu he ba fa. So, how will the session be divided? :-)

In our Sunday 7-830 a.m. free Tai Chi, Qigong and LHBF sessions at the back of U.P. Diliman admin building, the student has the option of finishing the whole routine, or segments of it.

Finishers shall be given a free VCD copy of the LHBF of Master Liu Xiao Ling (includes  multiple angles, forms in detail,  applications,  lineage, and interview).  They shall also received a finisher's certificate, and will be encouraged to promote the art and the accompanying energy accumulation exercises.

How Secret is Tai Chi?
by Elaine Waters

People have been drawn to tai chi for its health benefits, yet many people who try tai chi quit before they discover the true health benefits of tai chi. People find it difficult to learn tai chi because they cannot memorize the sequence of postures. Others who do manage to memorize, cannot figure out how to be at ease when standing in a tai chi posture. There are many things about tai chi that are done the way they are done because that is “the way it has always been done.”

Tai Chi is a secret art, known as an internal art, based on the concept of mastering the movement of chi in the body. Tai chi was considered secret due to its martial applications and potential training for power. Students often follow teachers through sequences of movement without much practical verbal instruction. It is taught that time and practice will develop the tai chi ability. The training in tai chi for health exercise and martial art have the same foundation. The alignment and principles are the same. One big secret in tai chi is to know that the information was disguised a long time ago. More tai chi students would develop a high level of skill if they knew how to look at the information as if it were in disguise.

Tai Chi students believe that the silence and repetition of a posture, over a long period of time, would bring the amazing tai chi skill. For most students however, it is difficult to make their own adjustments to tai chi postures, since students don’t know what to base the changes and adjustments on. Without a deep understanding of the philosophy on which the art is based, a student would be left to follow blindly. Many tai chi students don’t know that they are supposed to make adjustments on their own. To figure out the secret of effortless power in tai chi, a student would apply the Taoist classics and a practical sense of what naturally works.

One problem with a lack of information is that enthusiastic students can allow their tai chi to actually hurt their knees. Let’s talk about one example of common misunderstandings in tai chi instruction. “Tucking the tailbone is a commonly misunderstood tai chi concept. Those who tuck the tailbone while lowering the weight in tai chi should be aware that the knee is not meant to bear the weight of the body. The classics say to drop the weight to the root, which is the bubbling-well-point, located just behind the ball of the foot. Weighting the knee in a lowered stance and then turning the body is not good for the knee. This is not what should be done when practicing tai chi. The instruction to “tuck the tailbone” is not meant to be taken literally.

Since it has been agreed a long time ago that tai chi is a secret art, every piece of instruction can be easily obscured, and then misunderstood completely over time. The instruction to tuck the tailbone when practicing tai chi, doesn’t mean to actually tuck the tailbone. This one misunderstanding has caused many martial artists to stand in postures that are unnatural and will never bring the desired ability, no matter how many years it is practiced. If a student follows this method the body weight will be incorrectly placed in the knee and heel. Practical thinking brings us to realize that if tucking the tailbone was going to increase power, then we would do it while playing sports. Can you imagine running faster or jumping higher because you tucked your tailbone? I do not think this can be done. Tuck the tailbone has a meaning and a purpose in martial art training, but it is not instruction to tilt the pelvis forward while bending the legs. Tai chi is based on what is natural. Body movement and posture should not be an exception.

Then what is this concept all about? Tucking the tailbone is what happens when incoming force affects the practitioner in a proper tai chi stance. The incoming force compresses against the correct tai chi alignment thus causing the tailbone to tuck into the heel at that time for extra support. It is not a tucking that you do yourself, it just happens due to the opponents’ contact and force. Another way of explaining the words that are helpful for attaining the correct posture is to open the low back while lowering the weight. By opening the low back, the hips can be released and the weight can drop to the foot.

Good questions to ask about your tai chi posture is what, where, when, why and how. For example: What is this posture used for in a practical sense? Where do we find this motion in natural daily movement? When do we know that our alignment is correct? Why is this movement good for health? How can I develop on my own?

It is true that a certain amount of memorizing is necessary. However, many of the secrets can be found in every simple motion. Tai chi offers health benefits for the body through a unique way of moving, not to be confused by a certain series of postures. The postures are important only because they are the alphabet used to give structure to the information. On the outside, all the forms are different as artful expressions with martial and health benefits. Yet on the inside, the internal process which defines the art as tai chi is the same regardless of form or style.

STANDING:
To Develop Root, Structure, Line & Energy for Tai Chi Push Hands
Push Hands Workshop Series I
By Chris Vogel
A 4-hour Workshop
Either 11 Nov, 2007 (Sun)
Or 18 Nov, 2007 (Sun)
10:00AM-3:00PM (1hr Lunch)
At the Wushu Federation
Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila
Interview with push hands teacher Chris Vogel on the Push Hand Workshop Series I:
Still Mountain: Is this workshop only for "advanced" tai chi practitioners?
Chris Vogel: No, I wish that I had learned what I would be teaching at the very start when I was learning tai chi. My learning would have been faster and more efficient as I would have avoided developing many bad habits from not knowing the right feel and basic posture and movement qualities. Of course, beginners and advance would learn differently at their different levels. Essentially, every one would increase one's level of learning.
You mean, one can jump up from the proficiency level one is in through this workshop?
YES. BUT REMEMBER THAT YOU DID NOT LEARN A FORM IN ONE DAY.  EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW THE OUTSIDE, OR MOVES OF A FORM, YOU STILL WORKED WITH IT EVERY DAY TO MAKE IT MORE AND MORE YOURS.  THE SAME TYPE OF THINKING GOES FOR WHAT WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE WORKSHOP.  YOU WILL GO AWAY WITH EVERYTHING, BUT LIKE YOUR OTHER TAI CHI LEARNINGS, IT WILL TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO DIGEST THE INFORMATION AND REALLY MAKE IT YOURS.  Push hands is really the key to the real understanding of tai chi. Without it, we would be doing something that looks like tai chi, yes it can be very good looking, but it would MOST LIKELY be empty inside. It would be a beautiful dance that looks like tai chi. For many that would be enough, but to really gain the full health benefits and have an insight into tai chi's beautiful philosophy and martial arts application, the indispensable bridge is push hands.
I regularly do standing as part of my practice, what new thing will I learn in your workshop?
I've met many teachers of tai chi who also teach the qigong of Standing. But, when I push with them, I realize they can't use their root, their structure collapses, they are easily unbalanced and they cannot apply the energy they have.
In this workshop, we will not only learn the mechanics, imagery and sensations of standing, but, equally, we will also learn how they relate to push hands practice. Further, we will also learn how push hands relates not only to doing standing, but also to doing the form. It is the intention of this workshop to put direction to the way we practice either standing, form or push hands itself such that we are able to use our root, structure, and energy. This right direction of concept and intention is for us to jump levels in proficiency. This means, after this workshop, every time we apply this learning in our practice, we would be improving on our "internal power", thus will be breaking out to higher level from the rut that we ALL CAN FALL fAll into.
What else can I gain from this workshop?
You will also be given the way to gain the qualities of a good structure – the feeling of springYness and being connected and ROOTED. To gain the quality referred to as "iron wrapped in cotton". One will also learn the idea of having a center line and how to develop the ability to shrink and shift this line.
What other valuable qualities will I learn that I would not learn by myself practicing or reading in the Internet?
Tai chi is essentially a martial art requiring another person to learn with. That is the reason why the ancient masters developED push hands. Thru two persons learning and practicING one is able to put one's abilities "under a microscope". It is an important tool to observe the many subtle and profound aspects of this internal martial art. Push hands actually tests  whether you can use the energies developed in our formS practice, standing and silkreeling.
In this workshop we will learn to practice the basic and the essentials in standing, silkreeling and push hands in an experiential level. In the process we will understand some important skills in:
  • Contact Intention – How to listen to one's and other's energy. To distinguish the quality of our own and the other's structure.
  • Covering Lanes of Attack on You – How to avoid being HIT and ensure exits so that we are not jammed into a "corner'.
  • Connection and Chi Ball – How to form a clear connection with your partner and how to send chi in them to listen to their structure and energy "holes".
These are a few of the understandINGS we pick up from pushing hands with a qualified teacher, that we can bring into all our practices – our standing, our form, our lives and our own push hands with others. This is the way to break-out of the plateau MANY OF US HAVE experienceD, and jump out from the level we are in from after many years of practice.
Very few teachers teach this art. I hope people will take this opportunity to learn. This is our "yuan feng" – our luck.

Last question- Is P1,500 not expensive for a 4 hour workshop?

Actually, the average fee for a class of 50 people is around P300/hour. This workshop is limited to only 14 participants to give everyone the chance to personally push hands with the teacher. Considering  that and that there is also snacks and handout material. That is very reasonable. Finally, it's real value depends on how much real tai chi is worth to us. Some of us even go to China and spend real big for something one wants.
Real last one - I'm a teacher, wouldn't I lose my face learning?
Most definitely not! All really good teachers, continuously learn. That's what makes them really good. Everyone can learn from everyone, including myself, I learn from EVERYONE I PUSH WITH. IF THEY CAN PUSH ME AROUND, GREAT.  I'VE GOT SOMETHING NEW TO WORK ON.
-End-
