Charles: Now, would you have any take on the idea that one needs a black belt to
fight and to defend themselves? First of all, I want to ask you, do you believe
that one needs one?
David: Absolutely not.
Charles: And are there any reasons why you can give us?
David: Absolutely. I'll give you three good reasons.
Charles: Okay.
David: First and Foremost is that we have to understand that The Black Belt Is A
Recent Creation. It was created by Jigoro Kano for judo fighters. So, the black
belt is only really indicative of what you know in your personal martial arts
curriculum, and as we all know, some martial arts are completely impractical for
street fighting.
Charles: Hmmm.
David: The Second Reason is that I know plenty of guys who are bikers, who are
bouncers, who are bad dudes, who have never once stepped into the dojo, and
through their knowledge they have gained on the street from being in a fight for
real, not point tournaments, not winning trophies, these guys, when they walk
away, their prize is winning their freedom, their life. These guys can mop the
floor with most black belts out there today.
Charles: Wow.
David: The Third Reason is, really, and not to be clich', black belts are only
good enough for holding up your pants.
Charles: (Laughter.)
David: Unless, you have something to back that black belt up with, it really
doesn't mean anything. That black belt again is only indicative of how far you
are along in your own personal martial curriculum, and that most martial arts
are just not meant for the street. Those black belts are worthless, guys.
Charles: Well, there you have it, so those of you who are struggling years and
years to get your black belt, you can stop, and can focus on what really works.
David, it's been an eye-opener again, and we thank you.
David: Thank you very much.

thanks to Martin for sharing his knowledge with us, Andrew for organizing it
and to all those who attended thanks for making a great weekend and I really
enjoyed training with you all.
For
those who couldn’t make it – you missed a fantastic two days and
for those who may still have the chance to go to Sydney – do so you
will get so much out of it.
Hi - Also wanted to say Cheers to those who came to the Brisbane session- It was great fun even though I wasn't as prepared or as fit as I would have liked - it was good fun working with you and the seminar has re-invigorated my interest in systema and general martial arts training.
A big thanks to Andrew for organising, Martin for training so clearly and with
such expertise and to all the attendees for making my first experience with
Systema such a phenomenal one.
It really did exceed my expectations (has anyone else ever seen someone fight
two guys with their eyes closed and remain in complete control?) and I can't
wait to train again.
Cheers
Nick

Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder/request:
can you please bring along training knives (only rigid ones please - no rubber) to BOTH Brisbane and Sydney seminars. Also, if you have a few spares then bring them too so we have enough for everyone.
Martin has brought a bunch of copies of his first DVD - it is amazing and comes highly recommended by Vlad, so make sure you bring some extra money for that.

So you are thinking of starting to train in okinawan karate. There are a lot of
choices as far as okinawan karate schools are concerned. Which school do you
choose ? What is the best school or system? If you are a parent, what okinawan
karate school is best for your children?
Karate began in Okinawa, which is one of the many islands which make up Japan.
Okinawa was invaded by the highly organized samurai clans from the larger
Japanese islands. The islanders developed okinawan karate to defend themselves.
Okinawan karate was kept alive, passed down from master to student through the
generations and eventually became integrated into the school system for all of
Japan
Original Okinawan karate wass divided into styles which were named after the
cities in Okinawa that they were developed in. Shuri-te, Tomari-te and Naha-te
are all derived from cities in Okinawa. Okinawan karate is heavily influenced by
Chinese kung fu or kempo. Okinawans often traded with mainland china and
maintained friendly relations.
Today, there appear to be a enormous number of karate styles. However, all are
derived in one way or another from okinawan karate. One okinawan master, Gichin
Funakoshi introduced karate to the japanese school system. His shotokan style
became one of most popular karate styles in the world. Often students would
leave to create their own style. Many honoured their teachers instruction to
preserve the art but often, students would have disagreements with their
teachers and move out on their own.
Regardless of original okinawan karate style or mixture, it is important that
the style has a detailed curriculum, chance for future advancement to ranks
above black belt and lots of students and many instructors. You want to be sure
if the school is going to be around for a long time if you are going to be
devoting years of study.
Some schools are run for profit while others are not. You could say
not-for-profit schools are closer to the Original okinawan karate system where
karate was passed from father to son, master to student. Of course, If we
trained like they did in original Okinawan karate, there would only be 1 or 2
students!
So long as the karate school has the students welfare at heart, operating for a
profit is not a bad thing. My own experience has been with not-for-profit
schools, and I have had great instructors but there are just as many dedicated
teachers in for-profit schools.
True okinawan karate is more about self defence than tournaments and competition
but competition is often important to young karate-ka. If you are going to
involved in tournaments then be sure the school is affiliated with other karate
organizations and provides proper coaching and tournament instruction. Many
large governing bodies issue teaching and coaching certification to karate
judges and officials. You want to be sure you or your children will competing in
a safe and controlled environment and not a slugfest or free for all. So seek
out qualified people.
Okinawan karate can improve your health and well being, develop great self
confidence and life skills such as persistence and self control. Do your
research and find the club that you feel most comfortable with. If you are
interested, try out a couple of styles. See if okinawan karate is for you. Most
clubs will allow 1 or more free visits to help you make up your mind.

Just a reminder that the Brisbane seminar is on this coming weekend!
Please all get there about 20 mins early so I can get everyone marked off and so we can all start promptly at 12noon - 6:30.
Remember to bring something to eat and drink in our break as there are very few suitable shops around the gym. Also, there will be sports drinks available from the gym to boost what Martin is going to take out. It might be an idea to bring a change of shirt as it is getting quite warm and we are bound to work up quite a sweat.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!
That’s great and we all look forward to training with you again

Systema is the buzz word in Martial Arts. Developed from Russian Spetsnaz (Special Forces) training this is a dynamic martial art that using fluid motion and the bodies structure to disable multiple assailants.
From Serbia to Paradise - Alex Kostic, one of the worlds best exponents is flying in to share his knowledge in an in-depth four day training camp. Alex's ability to teach and his physical ability make him one of the most sort after instructors in the world - in any martial art.
Hey Ya'll,
I will be travelling over from New Zealand for the Brisbane leg of Martin
WHEELER's seminars. (24th/25th Oct)
I am wondering if anyone would be willing and able to put me up for the night? I
am very low maintenance and want for little.....can bring sleeping bag.....
I will be arriving on Saturday morning and going straight to the seminar. On
Sunday I will be leaving from the seminar and heading directly to the airport. I
plan on using public transport/taxi, so no worries there.
Just a room for Saturday night and a lift to the seminar in the morning would be
of great help.
Also, I'd like to say a word of thanks to Tim OSBORN down in Melbourne who put
me up during the Maxim FRANZ seminar. He and his partner were very generous,
letting me concentrate on the things at hand - the proper Russian beasting
provided by Max!!!
And, thanks to Adam, Peter and the rest of the crew at the seminar.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Martin Wheeler is one of the absolute premier Systema instructors in the world. He actively teachesspecial forces troops, police and security forces as well as coming very highly recommended by Vladimir Vassiliev. He is coming to Australia in October for 2 weekend seminars - events not to be missed!
"Martin now teaches his highly effective combat solutions to S.W.A.T. teams, the Boat Teams of Naval Special Warfare Groups Two and Four, Special Operations Groups and civilians around the globe."
martin's martial artist bio: Born in England, Martin walked into his first training hall at the age of nine. One of his friends wanted to try a Judo class at the local YMCA in his home town of Paignton, Devon. His friend soon left. Martin stayed. At age sixteen he began training in the brilliant street fighter Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate at the rough `doorman's academy' in the same town. Named because many of the local bouncers trained there he was introduced to Kenpo in unsparing bare knuckle sessions. One year later at age seventeen he began working at the local clubs as a bouncer himself, a profession he continued for the next ten years in clubs from London to the U.S. Over twenty years later, after rediscovering the roots of Ed Parker's journey studying boxing, Judo as-well-as jujitsu, Thai-boxing and Filipino weapon under world class teachers, Martin developed his kenpo to be recognized by the masters of the art as `SimplyAmazing`. Until he saw Vladimir Vasiliev, the former Russian Special Operative and former head instructor to the highest levels of the Russian military demonstrating at a seminar and knew he had witnessed something strange, unique and absolutely lethal in any environment. This was Martin's first exposure to The System. Now, training under Vladimir and the legendary Mikhail Rybako for the last ten years Martin is recognized as one of a handful of Senior Instructors in Systema andsees this beautiful and profound art in a very different way. Martin now teaches his highly effective combat solutions to S.W.A.T. teams, the Boat Teams of Naval Special Warfare Groups Two and Four, Special Operations Groups and civilians around the globe.
Martin is almost without peer in Systema cricles and it is a major event and massive achievement to have him coming out. Full details of venue and prices will be foloowing soon but please put these dates in your calendar, if you really want to see Systema at it's BEST then attending these seminars is a must!

Hi Everyone,
I have discussed with several people my plans to return to Brisbane in July of this year. Sadly, due to work and family commitments, I will now not be returning until late November. As a result (obviously) I won't be teaching in Brisbane in regular classes until the end of the year.
Keep training and watch this space for news of upcoming workshops in the lead up to Martin Wheelers impending seminar series in Australia!
