Well after riding tandems for 16yrs without a single crash, finally got
taken out by a car on Saturday afternoon.
Marian fortunately is ok with only a bit of skin off her left knee. I'm a
bit worse for wear. I landed on the point of my shoulder and seem to have a
torn rotator cuff. I was taken to Prince of Wales for x-rays, tetanus shot
and a clean up. Nothings broken and my AC joint looks OK which is the main
thing. Right thumb was hyper extended and at the moment still non-functional
so I have a left hand that works on an arm that doesn't and right hand that
doesn't work on and an arm that does. This I am finding, is not a good
combination. Elastic waistbands help.
What happened? We were riding along Norton Street heading toward Parramatta
Rd and as we were going to be turning right we were passing the cars that
were stopped at the red light. We were riding along the centre line as there
was no on-coming traffic towards a spot that I could see at the head of the
queue. Moron in car decides to drive to the lane that was 20 metres ahead on
the right hand side so he can avoid some traffic. This would mean that he
would be crossing a double line and driving on the wrong side of the road to
get there. Unfortunately for us, he pulled out when we were within a meter
of him. We were only doing about 10kms an hour and his car only moved about
1.5m but this was enough to take out the front wheel causing us to crash on
our left side.
Lots of witnesses came to help and gave us their details. The driver was
extremely apologetic and kept asking if there was anything that he could do.
We made an event report at Ashfield police station on our way home from the
hospital. They will be contacting the driver soon? and charging him with
something. I'll get the tandem taken up to Ashfield cycles today and get it
assessed for damage.
Any ideas as to the best way to make a claim for damages? any
recommendations (pm) for solicitors?
Just off for some ultra-sounds so the shoulder guy can make an assessment of
what to do next.
Cheers
Geoff
