RE: [sydneytandems] Home Early

I still haven’t been on the bike yet since we’ve been back. Legs are just about feeling ok again after that wonderful 100km ride that we all (your excused Ken) did. I hope your knees are recovering. Saturday’s ride would have seen you going home on crutches which would not be a good thing. I strained my left knee years ago battling into a headwind at 8km/h for a day and that knee is still the first one to play up if I have pushed to hard.

It always amazes me how many people are on a ride like this who insist on using lightweight racing tires to try and get to the pub that 5 seconds earlier. With the amount of time they lost repairing punctures they would have been much better off using a wider tires that had a decent Kevlar belt or some other kind of puncture resistance. Ah well it happens every year. Those Airfree tyres that were mentioned have been reviewed as being like riding through treacle. I like the exercise but I am not into masochism!

I’ve just sent some Soma 26” x 1.25” tyres to Fred and Barbara who are off to do the WA ride in a 10 days time. They were riding the KHS with the Rohloff hub. They took our tandem out for a ride at the finish and are going to order the same model that we have (different colour I hope). I hope that we are still riding our tandem when we are at their age (Fred is 73!) as they were just amazing for how much energy they have.

The cost for shipping a tandem from the US is about $300. The Krix’s acquired their tandem when it was brought out here as a demo model on one of the bike Friday get togethers. Tom and Carl bought theirs second hand and the father and daughter from Balmain I don’t know about.

I was thinking about a get together in Sydney for everyone who can make on the weekend of the 22nd of April. Either a ride to somewhere nice for lunch on the Sunday or Dinner on the Saturday (which would require lights for the ride home).  I think a medium (30km ok for the younger ones?) ride to lunch would be easier and for those silly enough we’ll work out a decent ride earlier in the day.

I add this to the calendar so we can start getting numbers.

Cheers

Geoff
