Riding down Henderson Road made safer by LTA   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1772 of 1903 |
Enjoy the ride to Desaru, KC!

We go up the hill, we go down, and then we go back up. Repeat ad nauseum.
Riding down Henderson Road after the ride up Telok Blangah Hill is now safer, thanks to our cycling kaki Alvin Soong from LTA who forwarded my request to have the grating
that was layed on the road close to the curb removed\covered. It is now cemented. This was done more than two weeks ago.

Thanks Alvin!
ciao,
n

No problem for late reply.

Where do you do your rides these days on Sat mornings? I might get one of my friends who has recently started riding (I gave him my Fondriest to start him off, and also make space on my bike rack at home for my next Pina) to join you when you are taking the new riders out since he has some way to go before he can keep pace with Mike and the rest of our group that starts from West Coast at 530am on saturday.

I am planning to join Gabriel on 3 Nov for ride to Desaru. Don't think there will be any police escort. Do you want to join us?

If you want to join Mike and me for Camerons and worried about getting wet, I can help you to wash the bike at my in-laws place.

Kenneth of Cycleworx will let me use one of his small chain ring for the Cameron ride.

Catch you again soon.

KC! Hello!

Sorry for another late reply from me...I was so caught up with all the lampu lap-lip #;#

ooo...paying for police escort ah...I will seek advice from the MHC regarding that, and update ooohkeh :))

I'm not able to do Cam Highlands again in December...scared of rain lor :D

I'll be going up with a 39x30 (6-speed) on a steel road bike this time...the 39x25 I used during my first ride up Simpang Pulai was tough but took me up belly fast...and using my middle chain-ring on my mtb the second time round was fun (I didn't have a road bike at that time). The 39x30 will be awesome.

Try to stay indoor\dry (find shelter) when it rains. I do dat.
ciao,

Nur,

Your specialty is getting police escort for Malaysia rides. Maybe you should continue to contribute in that way. Actually, I don’t mind paying for police escort for a safe ride, if the group can ride together. There are no roads in Singapore that offer the long rides without getting off the saddle.

Try Nepal next year since you cannot go now. I am sure she is going to enjoy the long trip there.

How about doing Cameron again in December. Mike and I will be doing a ride up during Christmas as we will both be there visiting parents and in-laws. Support vehicle provided by Mike’s brother.

KC

Hi Boon,

Sorry I hadn't been here since your last message to us. It's been more than a month since. Within that time, many of us have been at various cycling events as particpants and supporters.

I regret to announce that the cycling scene in JB hasn't changed much lately. The same group of cyclists who had been mugged during their training ride had been 're-mugged'...so I heard from a very reliable source. If I had been in any such situation, I wouldn't fight. I'll probably cry...and then find the nearest police station after that. To avoid any such unpleasant experience, I will not organise any bike ride in Johor.

In the meantime, whilst some of you will be making your way to Nepal (sorry I abandoned my previous ), I will be going on a 'pilgrimage' bike trip to Cameron Highlands in November. I will be enjoying the hills on my steel bike with a single chainring (39) and a 7-speed cassette (Regina Extra Synchro 90) with an ofmega rear d. Who needs compact chainrings and a 10 speed....hehee..

Ual be good now...speeding kills.

hi nur

sorry to hear your friend got robbed

if there is any consolation, he got off relatively "light" with RM55. at this moment, i'm thinking about the poor guy who got slashed with a parang on the face and neck and was on the front page of the home section in the straits times the other day

i think if your friend had managed to go to the underground club, something similar might well have happened there and in the darkness of a club, who knows what might have happened?

i'm thinking aloud here, so would appreciate if anyone would like to offer their thoughts: what if any of us had been in the same situation? would shouting out "Help!" etc at the moment of extortion have helped to scare away the robber?

Hi all,

Recieved the following message from a friend. Worth reading it.

Subject: New tactics in City Square JB?

Please take extra care when traveling alone..

Last Sunday afternoon, I received a call from a Malaysian colleague who say
that he wanted to bring me to an exclusive underground club in JB. I
arranged to meet him at City Square in JB at 5.00pm. When I reach JB City
Square at around 5.15pm, I called my friend and he told me that he will be
slightly late. I decided to go to the
Macdonalds near to the entrance at city square to wait for him. I ordered a
kiddy meal (as i was expecting to have dinner with my colleague later) which
come with a free toy. After ordering my food, I found a seat at the corner
of Macdonalds. It was a corner four seater table next to a wall. So I sat
next to the wall and after finishing my food, I took a look at the toy. At
that time, a skinny rugged looking man came over and sit right next to me.
The conversation were as follows:

Man : Are you a Malaysian?
Me: Why? (Sensing something is strange with this question)
Man:Just answer me.
Me : Pretending to be malaysian. Yes i am malaysian.
Man: So are you from Penang?
Me: No why?

Man: Doesnt matter where you are from, we are all chinese. Can you 'lend' me
$50?
Me: I got no money to lend you.
Man : Dont lie, I can see your wallet in your pockets. (I always put my
wallet in my front pocket whenever i go overseas.)

He then reached to his back pocket and took out a small fruit knife and
pointed the knife next to my tummy. Shit at that instant i knew it was
daylight robbery at Macdonalds. I was in shocked and i looked at him again.
I was trapped as I am cornered (i am am sitting next to a wall) and the
only route to escape is the seat which was occupied by him now.

Man: Dont force me. I am really desparate now. Dont force me. I am not
asking a lot from you only $50.
Me: $ 50 only?
Man : yes.

Fearing for my own safety, i took out my wallet and gave him $50. However he
wasnt pleased with the $50 and asked for another $5 ringgit to make a phone
call back home. I thought to myself, what the f*ck since kena robbed $50
liao what is another $5? So I gave him another $ 5. He took the money
happily and 'thanked' me before walking off. I tried to chase him but he
quickly walked to the exit next to the Macdonalds and make a quick run. I
decide not to chase him further when he left city square as i am worried
for my own safety and also i was already in a state of shock and do not
really know how to react. What pissed me off is at the Macdonalds, there
was a malay family with kids was sitting next to me and a staff who was
cleaning had possibly seen the whole incident and yet nobody is willing to
help me. After a short while i called my colleague and told him what happen
and cancel our planned trip and headed back to Singapore.I did not make an
police report as i think it is too troublesome to do so.

This will be the last time that i will ever go to Malaysia alone again. I
dont think it is safe even at broad daylight anywhere in JB. On the way back
i was really feeling very down as I was looking forward to a great time and
instead i had to head home disappointed, in a state of shock and $50 ringgit
poorer.

Description of the man who robbed me.

Height : about 168
Weight: 50+ (very skinny)
Race : chinese
Skin: dark tanned
Hair style: short but a little curly.
He look like a drug addict, wearing T-shirts and jeans. He hid his little
knife in newspaper wrapping at his back pocket.
